About the Author

In 1974, at age seventeen, Tom Kratman became a political refugee and defector from the PRM (People’s Republic of Massachusetts) by virtue of joining the Regular Army. He stayed a Regular Army infantryman most of his adult life, returning to Massachusetts as an unofficial dissident while attending Boston College after his first hitch. Back in the Army, he managed to do just about everything there was to do at one time or another. After the Gulf War, with the bottom dropping completely out of the anti-communist market, Tom decided to become a lawyer. Every now and again, when the frustrations of legal life and having to deal with other lawyers got to be too much, Tom would rejoin the Army (or a somewhat similar group, say) for fun and frolic in other climes. His family, muttering darkly, put up with this for years. He no longer practices law, instead writing full-time for Baen. His novels for Baen include A State of Disobedience, Caliphate, and the series consisting of A Desert Called Peace, Carnifex, The Lotus Eaters, The Amazon Legion, Come and Take Them, The Rods and the Axe, and A Pillar of Fire by Night. With John Ringo, he has written the novels Watch on the Rhine, Yellow Eyes, and The Tuloriad. The arrival of a new Kratman book in my mail box means several things. One, I won’t get enough sleep in the next couple of days. Two, I will leave undone several things I aught to have done, and three, I will have several hours of pure reading bliss. I suspect that if you read through all the reviews of his Carrera series, several will say, “The best book yet.” I will avoid that cliché and just say each one seems better than the last. Kratman is now the equal of Robert Heinlein. I finished this book in about 50 hours, but I had medical and work things that did not admit of postponement.

The intricacies of the plot, the depth of the characters, and Kratman’s wide understanding of history and military matters make him the master of this genre. He is a retired LtCol (USA) with a better grasp of tactics, strategy, weapons, and human nature than most generals. While this book will stand alone, if you haven’t read the rest of the series, I urge you to do so. In this book, the good guys finally go over to the offensive and lay the ground work for taking the fight back to Earth. Not to be missed.

I was looking forward to this book as I have enjoyed all the others in this series. I did have some trepidation, however, as I understand this is the last book Colonel Kratman plans to write in this universe for several years while he tackles other projects including a alternate history of World War one with other authors. Nothing wrong with this and I await the first book of that series. But I really would love to see Hamilcar Carrera give the Consensus of Old Earth a bloody nose. This book is as usual well written although towards the last chapters I felt the story was being rushed to it's ending. All in all I do feel it deserves my five star rating, I just hope I live long enough to read any sequels.

Are you trying to out do Ringo? Where is the end? I really enjoyed this series, it was worth having to go back and re-read books six and seven to get caught back up with the story. But, damn it man, I at least wanted something like the end of Watch on the Rhine. When are the Earthpigs getting theirs? I haven't yet read one of Tom Kratman's book that I didn't thoroughly enjoy, and most of the time re-read because he is that good of a storyteller. Thank you, sir.

However, it still left me with the hope of further stories, I mean after all Balboa and the Carreras now have a fleet of starships. I did like this LATEST instalment,without "Spoilers" MANY of the story Lines are taken "Onward and Upward" but there are STILL Resolutions to be achieved,and I DO hope that,regardless of Publisher's blandishments as to"New Series"/"New Exciting Concepts",there can be a FULL AND FINAL Conclusion,as the"Wheel Of Time" ground-EVENTUALLY to a conclusion,which of course has yet to be said for any Game involving Monarchical Seating arrangements. The series has been an absorbing and interesting read,readers have kept faith with Author and Publisher[DESPITE the delays in getting the Kindle Issue out],and I hope that that interest can be returned by us "Gentle Readers" getting the Final Volume-SOON! Carping aside,this has been a VERY good series!

Tom Kratman is an amazing author; I can't remember how many novels are in the Carrera series, but this was one of my favourites. The battle for Terra Nova is in the end-game, and the way Tom has crafted the plot lines to bring so many sequences together is amazing... Almost like the way Carrera himself has orchestrated the campaign against the Kosmos! The dialogue is sharp and full of dry wit, the characters are immediately believable, as are the situations and circumstances they face and (sometimes) overcome. Yes you should really really have read the previous novels in the series before you try this, but that is just going to make this even more satisfying. And - judging from the ending, there may just be more to come.... Bring it on Tom, and thank you Sir for another amazing novel.
