Massachusetts election results 2024
(NewsNation) — Massachusetts voters will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in pivotal races in the 2024 general election, including some that could affect who controls Congress.
Presidential race in Massachusetts
US Senate race in Massachusetts
In a U.S. Senate race, Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren will face Republican challenger John Deaton, who is seeking federal office for the first time.
Deaton, a cryptocurrency attorney, beat out two fellow Republicans in the September primary election to advance to face Warren. Democrats fare well in Massachusetts, and Warren supporters have gone after Deaton’s residency.
US House races in Massachusetts
All nine of the commonwealth’s Democratic representatives are seeking re-election for another two-year term.
Only two of the nine, Rep. Stephen Lynch who represents the 8th District, and Rep. Bill Keating, 9th District, face Republican challengers.
In the state legislature, where Democrats control both the House and Senate, there are 54 contested House races and 14 seats in the Senate being challenged.
Three of the eight seats on the Governor’s Council — which acts on pardons and commutations and confirms judicial nominations and gubernatorial appointments — are up this year as well.
Statewide ballot measures in Massachusetts
Massachusetts voters will consider a long list of ballot questions this election. One measure, Question 4, would legalize psychedelic substances like psilocybin mushrooms if approved.
Another, Question 5, would increase the pay of workers who receive tips, reaching the state minimum wage level by 2029.
On Tuesday, 468 U.S. congressional seats (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election.
Polls are open in Massachusetts from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m local time on Election Day. Early voting started Oct. 19.
Massachusetts — which carries 11 Electoral College votes — is a Democratic stronghold in the presidential race. The last time the state turned red was in 1980 for Ronald Reagan. Candidates need 270 votes to win the presidency.
In the 2020 election, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump by a 66% to 32% margin.
