Finalised Today—December 17, 2016 – The vote count for the United States presidential election is complete. Numbers continued to change daily since November 9, as mail in and absentee ballots in heavily democratic states: California, Washington, New York, and etc. were still being counted. Liberal laws in those states allow voters to mail in their ballots as late as postmarked Election Day.
The final numbers:
Hillary Clinton- 65,844,594
Donald Trump- 62,979,616
Hillary’s lead in popular votes is 2,864,978
Electoral votes have not changed as a result of these late counted ballots. What did change is the magnitude of Hillary Clinton’s lead in popular votes. This disparity in the outcome of results only illustrates flaws in an antiquated system, primarily: the electoral college has become a hindrance to democracy.
This is when all the angry winners (seriously) of the election tell me to: “Take a civics class!!!” “Go back to school!!!!!” “Educate myself!!!” because “I am truly stupid!!!!” and “The election is over so stop whining!!!” and the big one “We are a republic not a democracy!!!!!”
Stop abusing exclamation points— and maybe switch to decaf, I hear you. I have become the annoying sibling who keeps saying democracy democracy democracy…and that’s okay by me.
When did the word democracy become taboo in discussions regarding the United States? When the numbers started rolling in is what I would guess, because democracy is the rule of the majority, and Donald Trump would not have won the election if it were not for the electoral college. Donald Trump by the way is quoted as saying “the electoral college is a disaster.” Of course that was pre-election.
Wasn’t it the last Republican president who wanted to “Spread Democracy” throughout the Middle East?
In his 2005 inaugural address, George W Bush stated: U.S. policy will be to: “to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.”
Big words for him. Perhaps he wasn’t aware that “we aren’t a democracy!!!”
John F Kennedy:
“The true democracy, living and growing and inspiring, puts its faith in the people – faith that the people will not simply elect men who will represent their views ably and faithfully, but will also elect men who will exercise their conscientious judgment – faith that the people will not condemn those whose devotion to principle leads them to unpopular courses, but will reward courage, respect honor, and ultimately recognize right.” [p. 264]
“For in a democracy, every citizen, regardless of his interest in politics, ‘hold office’; everyone of us is in a position of responsibility; and, in the final analysis, the kind of government we get depends upon how we fulfill those responsibilities. We, the people, are the boss, and we will get the kind of political leadership, be it good or bad, that we demand and deserve.” [p. 265] Profiles in Courage.
U.S. president Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) defined our democracy as: “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
We are a Republic founded on the principles of democracy. The only election the United States holds that is not conducted with a pure Democratic ideology is the Presidential election which is in fact a competitive electoral democracy and it has become obsolete.
George Washington: “As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality.”

Final election numbers are not in. Millions of absentee ballots and mail-in ballots remain to be counted, and the final results are not expected until mid December. Why is it taking so long? Several States have very liberal laws regarding the acceptance of mail-in and absentee ballots: Provided they are postmarked on or before Election Day they will count. California alone has an excess of 4 million votes waiting to be counted.
According to David Wasserman, an editor at Cook Political Report who is tracking turnout: “We probably have about 7 million votes left to count. A majority of them are on the coasts, in New York, California, and Washington.”
The outcome of the electoral count will not change. What will change is Hillary Clinton’s lead in popular votes. The number is expected to grow exponentially. It is estimated that Clinton’s final lead in popular votes will reach 2 percentage points. —This according to The Atlantic.
The count as of this morning, November 13, 2016 is:
61,292,712 Hillary Clinton
60,565,143 Donald Trump

I’ve said it before, and I will continue to point out that The United States was founded on democracy. Relax people, I understand that we are a republic, but we are a republic which was formed with the principles of democracy.
Democracy = Rule of the Majority
Ironically, one of the original purposes of the electoral college was to “prevent a tyrant from manipulating the popular vote.” It has become instead a vehicle to dispossess the majority vote.
Alexander Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers:
“It was equally desirable, that the immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice. A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations. It was also peculiarly desirable to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This evil was not least to be dreaded in the election of a magistrate, who was to have so important an agency in the administration of the government as the President of the United States. But the precautions which have been so happily concerted in the system under consideration, promise an effectual security against this mischief.”
Clearly this system of voting gives the electors the right to vote effectually “against mischief“, and honor the rule of the majority.

Lydia, you are mistaken my dear, we are not a democracy we are a Republic Ruth democratic elements at the local level. The purpose of a Republic is to ensure that extreme left wing factions do not get control of our government. So we have an Electoral College which will always remain in place since we are a Republic.

The United States was founded on the rule of law and is a Constitutional Republic. It is not a straight Democracy. The important distinction is a democracy is rule by omnipotent majority, where the rights of the individual have no power against the rule of the majority. A Republic has a very different purpose and an entirely different form, or system, of government as a straight Democracy. Its purpose is to control the majority strictly, as well as all others among the people, primarily to protect The individual’s God-given, unalienable rights and therefore for the protection of the rights of the minority, of all minorities, and the liberties of people in general. A Democracy can do no such thing!!!

Thank you for the civility of your response. I understand all that you said, as I did when I wrote this. We are a democracy in as much as we are a republic. My post is valid. It would not be unprecedented for the members of the electoral college to vote in a way that doesn’t reflect their state vote. It has in fact happened 157 times in the history of the US. Granted some of that was due to a death, but most was not. I will hold on to this hope.

I don’t think Trump cares about the middle class. His tax breaks and policy changes will benefit those at the top.

Our founders realized that a strict majority rule would be detrimental to a civil society. It takes a super majority to change the constitution and I believe 38 states to ratify that change.

Each State was it’s own colony, territory, even some states were countries like Texas. Each state has rights to control it’s election and it’s own State constitution. We forget that every State is a powerful entity and has it’s own laws for elections and every state no matter how small deserves Representation in the Representative Republic

I see your point, however I recently saw some interesting math:
The population of California is 38,800,000
The population of Wyoming is 584,153
California gets 55 electoral votes
Wyoming gets 3
That means it takes
705,444 Californians make 1 electoral vote
194,717 Wyoming (ites? ans?) for 1 electoral
Which makes every vote from Wyoming worth 362% more than one vote from California.
I don’t see how the people of California can feel anything but disenfranchised by this disparity.

Yes Clinton won the popular vote, but only in California. The popular vote in 49 other states has Trump winning. The District of Columbia gets 3 votes and it does not have any Representatives or Senators. Which brings up another point that seems to be overlooked. Had the election outcome depended on the popular vote would any politician campaign in Michigan, Wisconsin, or any other state with a low population? Not likely, so wouldn’t those citizens be disenfranchised as you suggest and their votes meaningless?

If we were a ‘Democratic’ ruled society of ‘simple majority decides’ then let’s vote on Abortion, Gay rights, What Marriage means, EQUAL taxation across the board of ALL incomes, amongst a whole slew of other contestable ‘rights’ and see how that goes.
Of course, you would only want that system if it is in line with your policies.
See how long your LIBERTIES last.
IF you examine the vote counts of the last Presidential election…essentially Calfornia would have negated all other states votes and elected the entire nation’s president.

I heartily disagree with your assumptions. The majority of Americans DO believe women should have reproductive rights, google it, they DO believe in equality for Gay people, google it, they believe it is our right to have healthcare like every other democratic nation, google it, and the majority of Americans think AMERICANS, NOT RUSSIA should elect our president, google it.
This might be hard for you to understand, but California is part of America, it has boasts the 6th largest economy on planet earth, (maybe Space Farce will reveal better economies.) The California comment is wrong on every level.
Had you read my comment above, I broke down the count from each state, I’ll list it for you here again. When I originally wrote this post I was feeling more diplomatic than I am now. I SEE THE WRITING ON THE WALL. DONALD TRUMP NOT ONLY LOST THE POPULAR VOTE BY NEARLY 3 MILLION, BUT HE DID NOT WIN THE ELECTORAL VOTE, HE STOLE IT. ELECTION. VOTING MACHINES WERE HACKED, AN THEY WILL LIKELY BE HACKED AGAIN IN NOVEMBER, BECAUSE THE GOP WANTS TO STAY IN POWER.
