Is Felix Afena-Gyan a Ghanaian? What you should know

Felix Afena-Gyan made a name for himself on 21st November 2021 when he came off the bench to score two goals against Serie A side Cagliari to give AS Roma a 2-0 win. At 18, he became the first player born in 2003 to score in the league.

But at that time, Gyan had never played internationally, and his professional debut was a month earlier, on 27th October 2021. But based on the name Gyan, is Felix Afena-Gyan a Ghanaian?

Felix Afena-Gyan is Ghanaian. He came to the public limelight on 13 March 2021 when Italian Serie A side AS Roma signed him from EurAfrica FC, a football academy based in Accra, Ghana.

Then on 24 October 2021, AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho called Felix to the senior team in a Seria A match against Napoli. Although he did not play the game, he debuted professionally on 27th October 2021 against Cagliari in Serie A.

But after 22 appearances for AS Roma, Felix signed a permanent deal with Serie A club Cremonese.

Felix Ohene Gyan was born on 19 January 2003 in Sunyani, a city and the capital town of the Bono Region and the Sunyani Municipal of Ghana.

He started playing football at a young age and was one of the players at the Presbyterian Senior High School at Berekum in the Bono region of Ghana.

Furthermore, Afena-Gyan was the captain of his high school team and led it to the regional high school tournament.

As a Ghanaian, Felix received his first call-up by the Ghanaian men’s national team on 4 November 2021. But he declined the invitation from the Black Stars because he wanted to concentrate on developing his career at the club level at AS Roma.

Nevertheless, Felix Afena-Gyan debuted for the Black Stars on 25 March 2022 in a 0-0 match during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifications against Nigeria.

He scored his first goal for Ghana on 1 June 2022 in a 3-0 win against Madagascar for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Although Felix was among the 55 Ghanaian players to make it to the Ghana men’s national team provisional squad, coach Otto Addo left him in the final 26-man squad to play in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

Felix Afena-Gyan’s father is Mr Afena Gyan, and his mother is Juliet Adubea.

His mother has been vocal in his development and is Felix’s number one supporter.

Is Asamoah Gyan Felix Afena-Gyan’s brother?

Felix Afena-Gyan and Asamoah Gyan are not related.  

However, they are both from Ghana and have similar last names.
