Fear and loathing in Las Vegas.
Shoutout to whoever posted something about this movie a few days back. Decided to check it out and holy shit, this is a flick right here. 10/10 recommend to everyone in this sub. Fucking masterpiece.
i did a post about tripping on lsd and reading the book during the come up, was it my post maybe haha?
Yeah the movie is awesome, one of my all time favs. It really captures the psychedelic adventure terrors one might stumble upon in a drug fueled quest for, whatever youre delusional enough to go search for. In this case, The American Dream.
I really recommend reading the book. I just finished it yesterday and its equal as much of a masterpeice.
Yeah that was the post, and thank you for it. Im definitely going to have to buy the book. Its hard to find a read that intrigues me but I have no doubt it'll be an experience. Ive also never thought to read while coming up. Definitely something in going to have to try.
Go for it! I rarely read books, but I was sure this book would hold up to the movie, and it did. Every page is full of intriguing controversity.
Also very easy to read. English isnt my first language (swede) but I ordered it in english coz I wanted to read it in Hunters exact words and it never failed to dissapoint.
Reading on the come up was interesting. I could go into it deeper, felt the emotions portrayed big time. It also put me in a calm state of being which eased me into the trip without the usual anxiety one might experience during the comeup.
100% recommend reading the book. All of the narration from the movie is directly from the book, and even more crazy shit goes down than in the movie. (Although Hunter Thompson was such a great writer and sharp mind, he was engaging no matter what his subject matter...I suggest also reading his book "Hell's Angels," about the year he spent with the Angels in the mid-60's.)
Have you read the follow up to fear and loathing, the one about the nixon campaign if im not mistaken?
I’m gonna order some other of his work, but I don’t know which to choose
I've read some, but not all of it ("Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail").
I find almost everything he writes to be hugely entertaining, but keep in mind that his political stuff is quite detailed and not as off-the-wall as "Vegas."
Because he was probably best known for his writing in Rolling Stone, you should pick up a book called "Fear and Loathing at Rolling Stone: The Essential Writing of Hunter S. Thompson." I've read a bunch of the articles it contains, and it's definitely worth it.
I tried to watch it on acid, but on acid you can easily tell that people are acting so it's really hard to get into movies so I stopped it like 20 minutes in after being tripped the fuck out by the strange acting, then I went for a walk thinking about how weird Toby Maguire was in the beginning of the movie I saw lol I'm sure a low dose of acid can improve the movie, but a standard dosage just makes any movie way too weird to see the unnatural acting and stuff.
Indeed. I think silly cartoons ate better suited for tripping, it is what it is, and they arnt trying to fool you. Also, they often dont require your attention to follow the plot in the same stretch a movie with actors does.
"We can't stop here! This is bat country"
It's funny how my perspective on this movie has changed over the years. When I was a teenager they seemed like a couple of rebel heroes, living life to the limit. Now it seems like they're just reckless dickheads.
Well that's pretty much what hunter was, a reckless dick head (love him for it)
A lot of people said this movie glorified drug use and Shit but like how does this movie in the slightest glorify any sort of drug use? It literally shows the depraved nature of druggies just fucking christ look at their hotels man
Yeah. I think it's on the viewer if *they* glorify it. Kind of like when people watch Scarface and think dealing drugs looks cool. Spoiler: Tony Montana gets drunk with power, gets incredibly paranoid and ends up dying alone.
But when I was 16/17 I definitely just saw it as a crazy drug fueled adventure. It really just looked fun and exciting. I'm a bit more mature and now they just look like irresponsible drug addicts that can't keep their shit together. I also used to romanticize his 'drug philosophies' and just his whole attitude around seeing how far he can go. I look at Jim Morrison in the same way. When I was younger the Doors were everything. And I would get incredibly fucked up and act like I was Jim Morrison or some shit, god I was lame.
Hunter has stated himself that he doesnt condone drug use, voilence or any of the misbehavior seen in the movie or book. But he follows up that statement with ”however, it has worked perfectly fine for me”.
Hunter was a brilliant mind no doubt. He was flawed, no doubt. I think he accepted this persona and lived life to the fullest. Thats something I can respect, even if I myself dont condone his ways of living either.
I think the world is crazy, and Hunter knew this aswell. Western society is rotten through the core. We could do so much more with so much less. It may or may not make up for his behavior but it is totaly understandable imo. He was never suited for a 9-5 life anyway. With this said, had he fucked around with me, I wouldnt have hesitated on throwing punches is way, and I think he accepted this as a part of his lifestyle.
Also the book and movie is based on gonzo jurnalism, that means it partly fiction partly fact. Some of the stuff is made up for dramatic effects, but even the fiction is based on his experiences. Even if all didnt happen the way it shows in the book/movie, he is still potraying the lifestyle he took on.
Don't really know where that came from but okay
It wasnt even your account I replied to?
Im playing the devils advocate here, thats it
Yea I realize that but it's not really necessary? I wasn't taking shots and HST I was saying how the movie if anything did the exact opposite of advocating for drug use
It showed the depravity general fucked upness of the scene all together and that's why I mentioned it because some people seem to think he's trying to glorify irresponsible drug use
I know a lot about hunters character and he's an interesting man for sure but definitely not a role model.
I like his works a lot but he's been up to some really really shady shit in his life
Like being accused of shooting a child snuff film kind of shady shit. (I don't believe it for a second personally.
How are you a drug person and had never heard of fear and loathing in Las Vegas?
Go watch Spun while you’re at it
Ive seen spun before. Idk guess ive just never came across it until now, and im grateful I did.
Check out “where the buffalo roam” it’s also a Hunter S Thompson movie but with Bill Murray playing Thompson.
As much as I love the movie I can never see past bill Murray just being bill Murray, he never portrayed hunter as captivatingly as Depp could
I like seeing the similarities of how both actors chose to portray Hunter. Also it feels less dark compared to FAL.
“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”
Hunter S. Thompson
Literally my favorite quote from the movie. Your comment just made my day.
It's even better on psychedelic drugs.
It's even better to relive pieces of it in Vegas... Source: took two tabs my one and only night on the strip. Fucking epic thought of the movie the whole time lol
Yeah it's great. Check out The Holy mountain and El Topo.
what is it about?
Journalist Hunter S. Thompson (aka Raoul Duke) and his lawyer visits Las Vegas. Their objective is to cover the Mint 400, a race out in the desert.
However, thats not what the story is about. They bring enough drugs to sedate the whole town, binging on various psychedelics, dissociatives, stimulants and drink copius amounts of liqour. Trying to peice together the story for the magazine turns out to be a harder task then expected and instead, they begin their blind search for the american dream by voilating every law/rule Las Vegas lives by. They disturb turists, make their way through gathering of cops, getting caught up in days of psychotic episodes and cruise through town in a red convertable, rarely sober.
The genre is based on Gonzo journalism (from the book), part fiction, part fact. It brings humor, despair and a good look into the fading hippie culture of the sixties.
Johnny Depp is starring as Hunter. A perfect choice. Depp actually lived in Hunters basement for several months if im not mistaken. If one has dabbled with mind altering substances you will feel the terror portrayed and aproach it with glorious laughter. A masterpeice indeed.
The greatest rolling stones writer of all time.
Just friggin watch it
The escapades of a couple of drug addicted fools. The opening scene in the desert feels like an acid trip just watching it, the way the scene is shot and the dialogue flows is so acid like.
They really do a convincing job making us believe they are actually tripping. The dialogues are on point. Crazy, spontanious and emotionally unstable. Looove it
I wish sooo much to see this movie! Its never on netflix. Maybe on youtube?? Thx people
Don't know if you have cable but its on demand.
There’s a lot of different cable companies
i saw it on amazon
No Sourcing
There’s this really new thing from the early 2000’s called bittorrent. Try using that service.
yes hunnter thomson es un beast
Definitely a good movie. I'm not sure what I think of all the Hunter S Thomas worship in this thread though. He lived an insane life, so sure, from that angle he's interesting. But he was a genuinely horrible person to his family and he was an egotistical asshole. He emotionally abused his wife and his son fucking hates him. He really shouldn't be anywhere near a idol to anyone.
Still, good movie
Read the book
Oh man, I can't believe you're just now seeing Fear and Loathing, what a classic, I'm jealous haha, I've seen it a ton of times but the first time had to be the best.
Dude. Drop some tabs and watch it again. It's quite the experience.
Loved it when I was 14. Rewatched it about 6 months ago aged 18 and it was terrible. There are a couple good scenes and some of them are shot well but there is no real story or discernible or interesting plot. The movie is just people being fucked, like that’s the whole movie. You could splice pretty much every scene into a different order and it’d be the same movie. I think I just liked it when I was 14 because it had drugs in it.
I think youd enjoy the movie much more if you did psychedelics and such(assuming you don't). Or at least understand it.
I’ve done psychedelics. Not loads, done mushrooms before but mostly just a lot of K. I don’t think this is the case, it’s not a good movie if you can only appreciate it if you can directly relate to the experience of the character. I think it’s just a boring movie.
I guess we just have to agree to disagree. Everyone has opinions and I cant relate to the exact situation obviously but me and friends have had so many ridiculous ass drug fueled "missions" that it was judt amazing too me
Yeah but the dialogue sucks, it’s not funny ( well the humour of it dies quickly) and there’s no story. Maybe the book is better. There are many better movies about drugs. And even the hallucinations in the film are comic and unrealistic ( not saying it’d be better if they were less comic and exaggerated but it kinda means even if you have done psychs it doesn’t mean you can relate).
Well, for me it is actually really funny, but yes read the book! More then once I was laughing like an idiot reading that.
I agree with you, it's not a novel/movie very story driven, but that's because the message behind it is about the characters in the movie and the society they happen to live in. It's basically a double criticism about how the hippie movement -with his psychedelic dreams of consciousness- failed, leaving behind this mass of junkies not adequate to leave in the society it was forming. A society that swallowed that movement with his air conditioned casinos and offices and broke markets, where the commodity of life killed the sense that a consciousness revolution was near to be done. Basically is about how the yuppie movement replaced the hippie movement. A failing dream replaced with another failing dream.
But despite the heaviness of the message, it's very easy and funny to read, and it ends with a bittersweet sense of hope towards the future (maybe a bit more bitter that sweet, but still hope!)
Fyi K is not a psychedelic.
It’s a dissociative but you can have extremely trippy, intense hallucinations on it. It is a de facto psychedelic. I’ve had full on out of this world stunning visuals ( closed eyes and opened).
I have no idea how people do that, the only thing I get from it is euphoria and dissociation.
