The only real attraction here is the brilliant acting of Kevin Spacey
vincentlynch-moonoi25 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
If you watch this movie because it sounds like a great movie, you'll probably be disappointed. It's not great. It's not bad, either. It's okay.

If you watch this movie because you enjoy watching Kevin Spacey act, then you'll enjoy this flick. Spacey is that rare actor I can enjoy watching even in a bad movie...and lately some of his flicks haven't been that inspired. But, Spacey is a gem, even when the film isn't.

I rather enjoyed Camilla Belle as the daughter and Heather Graham and Anna Anissimova as her friends. John Stamos' part was so small as to be pathetic -- basically 1 scene. Johnny Knoxville did okay as the store manager. To be honest, I've never understood the attraction to Virginia Madsen as an actress, and I still don't. Among these supporting actors, the only one that stands out -- perhaps -- is Camilla Belle.

The plot? After Robert Axle (Spacey) goes to prison when one of his inventions maims many customers, he comes out after 8 years. Will he rebuild his reputation? It doesn't seem that way at first when he winds up as a rather unsuccessful custodian in a discount store...and gets fired. But, he finally gets a great idea and makes it a success. The bigger question is whether or not he will be successful in repairing his relationship with his daughter.

Unfortunately, the plot is beneath Kevin Spacey. But it's watchable, and of course, his acting is very watchable.

Filmed in New Orleans, he's a "fabricator", not an inventor.
TxMike22 April 2020
I came across this on YouTube free streaming movies "with ads". But there were no ads.

I used to live and work in the New Orleans area and it is fun trying to recognize locations. Kevin Spacey is Robert Axle, inventor, but he likes to call himself a "fabricator" because he always gets his inspiration from things that already are available, usually two things, and he combines the ideas. He has become a Billionaire this way.

However quickly the movie cuts to 10 years later, Robert is getting out of prison after 8 years, seems his last product had a nasty habit of cutting off the fingers of the users. Still there should have been $$Millions left had it not been for his extravagant wife.

So most of the story is about his getting back on his feet and holding down a job, a condition of his parole. And also getting back into the good graces of his daughter, now 20-ish. There are a number of funny situations, plus some that fall flat.

It isn't a memorable movie but Spacey is good and I enjoyed it for what it is.

How reviews work
digdog-785-71753813 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
If you find yourself coming to IMDb for a sneak peek at your next movie outing, please remember this rule: reviewers who vote a film 8* or more, if they have only one, or two at the most, reviews posted .. are probably what the industry calls "sponsored reviewers" or, in layman's terms, "professional bullsh**ers".

Unfortunately Father of Invention is one of those titles that the parent studio feels needs sponsored reviews, as you can see for yourself if you browse the few reviews here on IMDb (just click on the Author's name in the review); the film isn't terrible, but apart from Kevin Spacey doing his best, there really isn't much of a story to keep it afloat.

Rober "Bob" Axel has just come out of jail for marketing a faulty product (whait, what? do corporation chairmen go to jail for that? this film must be set in a parallel universe where criminal charges apply differently than real-life US), and he has to start again from the bottom rung of society, trying to rebuild all he lost, including his family, car, friends, and all that upper-crust stuff. He fails.

That's about it for a pretty mediocre film, with a very diminutive script, truly awful supporting characters, middle of the road acting, and lacklustre direction; Spacey is good, but the constraints of a unimaginative ..everything .. leave him no space to shine.

Avoid this film if you can, there are too many boring and inconsequential filler scenes in it to make this an easy sit-through, even with friends. Instead, do go see something else out this week, like Soldier Spy, Machinegun Preacher, 50/50, 1911, Heavy Times, or the superb Drive. Anything really, but not this. Or Melancholia.

Final vote, 4/10. Pretty bad.

Instead of a comedy about an inventor, we get a dramedy about a father
napierslogs25 November 2011
"Father of Invention" stars Kevin Spacey as a fabricator, an infomercial king, who combines existing products into new ones. Problem is he was in jail, now he has lost his empire, and lost his family. The key word in the title is father. The entire film is him trying to reconnect with his daughter (Camilla Belle).

Spacey has frequently played fathers trying to reconnect with their daughter, the prime example being "American Beauty" (1999). Not that one is likely to confuse the two films, but there's an underlying similarity about the pursuit of success and the pursuit of family. That's what "Father of Invention" is about but it doesn't actually explore those issues.

It's also supposed to be a comedy, but because it was just him and his daughter there was nothing clever that catches you off-guard to make you laugh. The daughter (whom, by the way, I have already forgotten her name) lives with two roommates. One is in love with Kevin Spacey (whom I have also forgotten his character's name) and the other is a lesbian. There was no slow reveal for any of this. Those facts were just presented as if they create whole characters.

The conflict which this builds to isn't surprising (it's part of the mandate for dysfunctional family dramedies) or even interesting since we never did care for the characters in the first place. "Father of Invention" certainly didn't invent anything and there's nothing special about the daughter or the father.

YOU'RE A FABRICATOR
nogodnomasters11 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The whole premise had me scratching my head. Corporate executives do not go to prison due to liability on their products even if they deliberately produce a product that will harm people. Ford Motor company proved that with their exploding Pinto. So now Kevin Spacey spends 8 years in prison and his family never comes to see him? Once you get past that...and I never really did, we end up with a movie that has some good scenes connected by a bad plot.

I didn't like Heather Graham defining herself as a lesbian to strangers. That was so unreal and not funny. The negative relationships and feelings that were rampant against Kevin Spacey, was not believable. Kevin played a guy whose only fault was that he enjoyed his work. If you want a somewhat feel good comedy without f-bombs, sex, or nudity this one might fill in...but don't think too hard about it.

A very light film which leaves the audience disappointed
Ed-Shullivan22 January 2014
Even first rate actors like Kevin Spacey cannot save a film just on their name alone, they need a better script to work with. In this case Kevin Spacey plays a successful multi-millionaire inventor named Robert Axle who ends up serving a 10 year prison term for inventing and releasing prematurely an exercise machine that severs fingers from a number of purchasers. Robert Axle invested his whole life in marketing his inventions and no time what so ever with his little girl, played by Camilla Belle, or his ex wife Lorraine played by Virginia Madsen.

When Axle gets out of prison not only is his name poison with the large retail giants, but his ex wife has remarried to a Forest Ranger named Jerry King played by Craig Robinson, and they have slowly squandered a fortune of over 200 million dollars. Axle's only daughter Claire, played by Camilla Belle still suffers from latent child abandonment issues. So life has been cruel to Robert Axle these past 10 years in prison. He first befriends his daughters two roommates, who agree to give up their couch to Robert rather than have to watch him live in a men's shelter for too long.

In an effort to redeem himself and regain his Midas touch with a new invention, Axle goes to work at the fourth largest retail chain named Family World, whose immediate Assistant Store Manager is a guy named Troy Coangelo, played superbly by Johnny Knoxville. Axle and Troy don't see eye to eye on the store's priorities and as such Axle's career at Family World is short lived. Desperate to make amends with his daughter Claire, Axle does come up with a new invention but can't find an investor willing to risk financing a dead beat and felony ex convict like Axle.

Eventually he does find one investor and he also makes amends with his daughter. Yes, there are a few sentimental tear jerker scenes between father and daughter but not quite enough good film value for me to recommend Father Of Invention for your viewing pleasure.

As a result I rate the film a 5 out of 10. Viewer beware of a weak script with little decent content.

Better than average (in my opinion only)
bowmanblue28 October 2014
I was quite surprised at all the ultra negative reviews regarding 'The Father of Invention.' Okay, I'll admit it isn't Kevin Spacey's finest film and obviously it isn't up to the standards of American Beauty, but I found it had a certain amount of charm to it.

Spacey plays a slick 'infomercial' salesman who ends up getting his good-life taken away from him when he goes to jail, thus leaving his wife and daughter high and dry. Fast forward eight years and he's released and desperate to make amends (not to mention lots of money).

It's not the most original of stories and you can probably predict the ending, but it is Kevin Spacey in the lead role and, slightly dubious script or not, he still lends plenty of heavyweight kudos to the whole affair. It's definitely a comedy/drama. If you're expecting a 'laugh-a-minute' affair then you'll be sorely disappointed, but I found it had enough humorous moments to keep me happy.

Like I say, predictable ending and plenty of 'lessons' to teach us, but if you're a fan of Kevin Spacey, it should keep you going until his next offering.

Kevin Spacey is terrific
raisleygordon31 December 2011
Don't listen to the critics who pan this movie. Yes, it is predictable, and obvious. But the movie doesn't preach, condescend, take itself (too) seriously, or take its precious time going somewhere. This is actually better than I expected. No question about it, "Father of Invention" is great entertainment, and very effective. You don't have to be a "genius" to enjoy this movie. I could have done without the subplot regarding Heather Graham's lesbian character. I didn't feel it was necessary. It's just a plot device. And I would have loved to see John Stamos a lot more. With an interesting character as his, that one scene wasn't enough. Although he is mentioned near the end of the film. If you're looking for a quality movie to watch (and enjoy Kevin Spacey), this is that movie.

An enjoyable movie that is very funny. The movie succeeds mostly because of the actors, who are all good. I say B.
cosmo_tiger16 October 2011
"Haven't you ruined enough peoples lives?" Robert Axel (Spacey) is the world's greatest "fabricator". Combining two ideas into one new one makes him millions. When one idea, the "ab-clicker" (an ab machine/TV remote) breaks peoples fingers he is found liable and is sent to prison. After serving 8 years he is released and moves in with his daughter and two roommates. Kevin Spacey has started to make a living playing offbeat, somewhat eccentric characters that have to build themselves back up. While this performance is not quite as good as "Casino Jack" it is still very good, and the movie is too. A very funny and enjoyable movie to watch. While not very original it is still very entertaining and Spacey's interaction with the other characters is what makes the movie. The supporting cast which includes Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville and Craig Robinson are great and while the movie is a rehash of many other movies the acting and dialog make this well worth watching. Overall, a very entertaining movie that is only that way because of the cast. I give it a B.

Would I watch again? - I don't know if I would.

Nothing wrong with this movie.
MrOvletine9 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, all the negative reviews on here babbling on and on about 'direction' and 'script' and so on, from a bunch of armchair quarterback directors. Most of these people have no background in film, for sure. It's not an easy thing to make a movie but certainly is easy to watch it in your living room and then look up a glossary of movie terms so you can slay it in the reviews. I like this film. It's not an epic, but it's not supposed to be. Good performances all around. A little humor and something to think about. Decently paced. I enjoyed it. Kevin Spacey is, as always, really good. Virginia Madsen, as always, was really good. The rest of the cast also did a great job.

A Mother of Inventions
writevjnow-IMDB31 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
FATHER OF INVENTION (2011) stars Kevin Spacey and I thought it might be really good, hilarious, but it was more than a bit corny and I got sick to death of that blonde saying 'I am a lesbian'. So what? It wasn't all that funny the first time she said it and it certainly didn't improve with repetition.

Robert Axle (Spacey) is a 'fabricator', not an inventor, he says. He puts things that already exist together into a new product but one of his fabrications severed fingers actually, and he ended up doing time in prison. When he got out, years later, all his hard earned millions had gone to the now ex-wife and her new husband, and to the injured via lawsuits. He was broke, jobless, homeless. And keeping down a regular job wasn't easy for him. He seemed to be disaster prone. Always in the wrong place at the wrong time mostly. And everywhere he went, trying to better himself, he bumped into people with severed fingers. His wife, living in the mansion he paid for, spending the money he earned, doesn't want to know about his problems. His daughter doesn't seem to care for him much either but she takes pity and he ends up sleeping on the couch in the home which she shares with two friends, one being the boring lesbian ('fraid so'). And so the story went.

It's not bad for a rainy afternoon when you have nothing better to do but my expectations tend to be high with Kevin Spacey. Still, not to worry, you can always play Scrabble or Chess and keep up with this plot at the same time.

For Spacey Fans only
dunsuls-12 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
OK I admit I always be loving me some Kevin Spacey and "Black Comedies".While this film pales as good comedy, its still good enough Spacey for me and thus the ONLY reason to see it.Infomercials are boring and silly and so are the people who make them.In some regards this film is a update of "The Jerk"in the sense that a guy has it all and loses it because of a bad product then gets it all back.Instead of being born a "poor black child" Spacey's Robert Axle is the common emotionally poor father. The rest of the cast are unimportant as their characters really mean nothing including Axle's daughter, played well enough by Camilla Belle. No,its the sharp ever scheming mind of Axle that matters and Spacey can do this sort of part very well, see "Casino Jack "as a example.Released in 2010 and running but 93 minutes, its for Spacey fans only as no one could really care about someone like Axle for real,or his pathetic life.

Seriously...what was Spacey thinking?
LiquidPoetry19213 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if Kevin Spacey made this atrocious movie because he lost a bet, or was simply doing someone a favor, but it CAN'T be for the quality of the script!

Spacey plays the character Robert Axle, a 'fabricator' who invented a hazardous product that landed him in prison for 10 years. After he gets out, he reconnects with his daughter who wants nothing to do with him, and ditsy ex-wife who has burnt through the fortune he left behind trying to record an album (although completely tone deaf, but nobody will tell her).

Axle cleans up his disheveled prison look (complete with a man bun), to 'fabricate' a successful child finder wristwatch, which completely redeems his career.

If my review sounds like a complete mess, than I have accurately captured the essence of this movie. It's hard to believe the genius behind 'American Beauty' and 'The Usual Suspects' had anything to do with this incredible waste of time. Gave a VERY generous 2* out of 10.

Nice movie. enjoyed it
ismsons-910-41162310 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It is a movie that you can watch with your family. characters are well thought out. and you enjoy watching it. Kevin Spacey is as usual great and can make you smile several times. Main zest of the story is more than focused on invention. But is a love affair. it was a good time spent. Hollywood should come out with more movies with some character in it . Also i think these movies deserve more popularity then less material movies get now a days. For those who are criticizing this movie they must understand that the story has to fit in 2 hours so you cannot be entirely practical. it is a must watch for all. more of these kind of movies will make viewers more caring about their family .

Horrible. You'll feel cheated out of the time you could have spent doing ANYTHING else.
jmbuehler12 October 2011
Stupendously dumb movie. Complete waste of time, and pretty cringe-worthy to see Spacey struggling with the weak script, the flat acting and cramped humour.

Most scenes appear blatant and set up with an idiotic take on what should be the structure of a 'fabrication' of a riches-to-ashes meets my-daddy-is my hero tale.

Just watch 'The Pursuit of Happiness' backwards followed by 'Meet the parents', throw in some amateur level editing and Uwe Boll talent for delivering and you get the idea.

Definitely Spacey's worst performance and most certainly one of those titles in which most times you'll be asking yourself 'Oh Kevin, what did you do?'.

If avoidable you really should.

Also, it seems all other (three!) reviews are dupes. Which is why I felt the need to share this.

How does this happen?
William_Henry_Pratt20 January 2012
Do cardiologists operate without having spent a second in Medical School? Do Engineers build bridges without first knowing something about mathematics and physics? Then how the hell did this guy get away with writing and directing this dreck? Because in Hollywood these days it doesn't matter whether you know your craft just be a good friend to someone who can pull a movie together. Zanuck, Mayer, Laemmle, the brothers Warner are all rotating in their respective graves at a very high velocity.

First for a comedy the camera is way too close and many times the geography is all out of whack. It has that poorly lit video sheen. Appears to have been shot at 29.97.

The actors give it their best but the script is such a ludicrous and absurd mess they can not be saved. Plus the dialogue feels lifted right out of the world's worst film school short. There is no drama or comedy. Everything becomes one unfocused blob. It appears they may have shot the first draft of the script.

Direction was non existent(maybe spent way too much time at the craft service table) and I've seen monkeys edit better motion pictures, but considering the footage may not be the editor's fault.

The best thing about this was the subtitles and goofed on this film. At times realizing the picture was so awful they just placed gibberish in place of the dialogue.

A total waste of a germ of what may have been a good idea and a very, very talented cast.

It's so sad...

Find a New Act
view_and_review6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is so emotional and for no good reason. A guy went to prison because of a malfunctioning product, yet he was treated like a murderer. At first it was funny that he was such a loser for going to prison, then the act got old.

Robert Axle (Kevin Spacey) was an "As Seen on TV" product creator. One of his products was poorly made and severed the fingers of the more absentminded users. He was convicted of gross negligence and went to prison for eight years for the crime. I know that's not at all how that works, but it was necessary for the plot.

When he got out of prison he was about as welcomed by the world as the latest COVID variant. Even his own daughter hated him, yet he stayed with his daughter Claire (Camilla Belle) and her two roommates, Phoebe (Heather Graham) and Donna (Anna Anissimova), while he tried to get back in the "fabrication" game.

Claire was the forlorn daughter with daddy issues. Donna was the roommate who was a fan of Robert. And Phoebe was a violent bitter lesbian who inserted herself far too much into Claire's relationship with her dad, which I didn't think was funny at all. If she was supposed to be Claire's friend, why would she be seeking to create a bigger rift between her and her father? And what "friend" talks to their "friend's" father the way Phoebe did? It was childish, lowbrow, and a new kind of trashy. Phoebe was treating Robert like he was an ex-boyfriend she had to protect Claire from.

This movie was good when it steered away from being emotional and preachy, and frankly, whenever Phoebe was not on screen. But it fell into the same tired pattern that so many movies of this ilk fall into. Let me give you the formula:

On top. Fall from grace. Rebound, but never learning the real lesson. Realizing the real lesson.

And this movie in particular was the missing father kind, which are particularly galling to me because I have found that Hollywood hates working fathers. I don't even know how many movies I've seen with the successful dad who's hated by his family because he's never there.

Claire was royally upset with her father because he wasn't there for her. To me it made her selfish and childish, but for the purposes of this movie she was the victim. I think a better daughter--one who is adult enough--could've seen that her father went to prison for a mistake. A better daughter would've stayed in contact with her dad who was serving time, but Hollywood princess daughters pout, moan, sulk, and wait for their father's to come to them begging for forgiveness for trying to be the best fathers they can. Per Tinseltown we should be asking our children how to raise them.

Invariably, Robert rectified things with Claire by the end. He had been on his way to patching up their relationship when he tripped up. He stole the roommate Donna's identity and opened a credit card in her name. It could've been a small blip, but this movie made it into an earth shattering issue. He needed $5000 to make a prototype of his latest idea and no one would loan him the money. He opened a credit card in Donna's name, got $5000, and turned it into a $125,000 advance.

While Robert was ecstatic that he was back in the invention biz, he ran into three pitifully sad faces like they'd just witnessed a puppy being sacrificed. Claire and her two sidekicks were utterly distraught that Robert would steal Donna's identity. Granted, I'd be mad at that too, but once he said he had the money to fix it, then it would no longer be a problem. Or at least it would've no longer been a problem enough for me to cut my dad off completely.

So, right when things started going Robert's way he was back on the rocks with his daughter and it would take the classic speech digression to make things right. I'm sure you know the speech digression. That's when the protagonist is slated to give a certain speech, but midway through he has an epiphany then he digresses from the rehearsed speech to make it more personal and usually unrelated to what he's talking about. The slow piano music chimes in and the speech is heartfelt, then everyone cheers. It's such a ridiculous cliche, but "Father of Invention" had to have it.

This movie wasn't terrible, just old hat and by now I already get it. If a father is successful he should stop working so much and spend time with his kids. If a father is struggling, then he's a good father, even though a lot of blue collar dads work tons of hours too for the overtime, but blue collar fathers are off limits. I don't know when successful fathers became the enemy to Hollywood writers, but I'm saying that they need a new act.

An enjoyable film
Gordon-1110 January 2012
This film is about a famous fabricator whose life is derailed by a problematic product. After an eight-year prison term, he is determined to get back on his feet.

I find "Father of Invention" very good. The script is very good. It tells a successful business hitting rock bottom, losing his career, reputation, money and his family. Kevin Spacey is very convincing as a man in such difficult situation; we can see the desperation in his face, and yet his eyes still sparkle with determination to be the successful. The subplot about family is touching as well, the characters connect with each other and with the viewers as well. I really enjoyed "Father of Invention".

Pretty good, not great
vchimpanzee4 August 2015
As the charismatic inventor who appears on TV, Kevin Spacey does quite a good job. He's done this type role before, but Bernadette Peters was there to overshadow him. Here, that's not a problem. Later, I can't say Spacey is that good, considering what he has accomplished, but he has his moments. The best one comes when he realizes he needs to fix his relationship with his daughter.

Heather Graham doesn't start out well. She is nothing more than a nasty lesbian who keeps pointing out that she's a lesbian. Later, she proves to be much more and is even likable. And not a lesbian. Bi, maybe. While I liked her two roommates better at first, by movie's end Phoebe is the best character.

I'm not sure what to say about Johnny Knoxville. The store manager resembles Ty Burrell and, maybe just for that reason, I think Burrell could have played the role. And better. Perhaps he wasn't available. His bumbling Phil Dunphy had similarities to this character that make me think it could have worked. Still, there were times I found the man entertaining.

I liked Claire okay, but she quickly grew impatient with her father, and I guess with good reason. She wasn't as easy to like later, and I'm not even sure how good a job the actress did. One thing stands out about her and that's her great smile at the bank.

I also liked Donna, but she really gave me a reason to like her. At least at the beginning. I'm not sure she had much in the brains department, but she is a sweet girl.

Red West was memorable as Axle's engineer. While he was old and getting senile he knew what he was doing, mostly. It is a great scene where Axle realizes this man he is depending on isn't quite what he used to be.

John Stamos is ideal for the role of a constantly smiling but superficial pitch man. You want to like him because of how he appears on the surface and can't stand him when you see what he's really like. He's just not around much.

Michael Rosenbaum is kind of a disappointment. He makes the most of a small role but he used to be so much like Axle. Genuinely evil with lots of money, though, instead of just someone who messed up.

Craig Robinson is easy to like as the new man in Axle's ex-wife's life.

And about the ex--she is nasty and I can't stand her. And yet Virginia Madsen played such a wonderful character when I saw her the same weekend in "Sideways". She proved what a range she has. Be sure and stay around for her atrocious duet with her husband in the closing credits.

Other than the hideously bad closing credits, the music is good most of the time.

It was a mostly enjoyable movie. I wanted to see Axle succeed. But it's not easy.

Quite disappointing...
MattCeckiewicz19 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I saw the screening of "Father Of Invention" yesterday on the Berlinale Festival 2010. I didn't had expectations besides the fact of being quite a Spacey fan for a long time... but this movie was hugely disappointing...

Good things first: Camilla Belle... Oh wow... :)... What a beauty... A great actress I wish seeing more regularly in future... She made every scene she was in...:)... I am in Love...^_^...

The filmed locations were beautiful (New Orleans, expeciately the shared apartment where the girls live...)...

Now the other things...

It is supposed to be a comedy, but be prepared for some boot-in-the-nuts humor... It may work if you want to relax and don't want to think too much about it, but: Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick, how many times can you watch a male getting his balls bashed...?...

Some characters were flat as a balloon in a vacuum chamber (Donna...??...) and the Script partly ridiculous (Lesbian, that doesn't know whether she really is a lesbian, a make-daddy- look-less-like-a-hobo-makeover, countless felon bashing remarks, etc.)... It went on and on and on...

Don't get me wrong, the acting is pretty good, nothing remarkable or weep-worthy as one might "Suspect" from other Spacey Movies (;)...), but still well done... Good interaction between Axle, his wife and daughter (hilarious: The new Black Husband...)...

The worst thing about the script is definitely watching the Bob Axle getting his ass handed to him several times without bothering about it too much since he is a "convicted felon"... I mean, come on... This guy has invented something people were too stupid to use which caused a lot of mutilated fingers, etc. ... Because of this, he is avoided by everyone, cursed, discriminated... even assaulted... You can see people with mutilated fingers everywhere... His own daughter is treating him like garbage and what is he doing: Goofing around, trying to be "a good dad", failing hard at simple tasks... horrible... At the end he decides to "tell the uncomfortable truth" about the invention that is supposed to bring him back to former glory, still the product becomes a huge hit... What is the message behind all this...?...

3 of 10 stars from me, if you are an avid Spacey fan a must see, simply because it is so different to see him in a lighter role then usual... for all others: Only if you are okay with light (very light...) humor...

Enjoyable with room for improvement

This film starts off well but the deteriorates about halfway through and falls flat into a clichéd ending.

Kevin Spacey was good and I appreciated his humorous performance and physical comedy. Camilla Belle was OK, but bordering on mannequin performance (I have liked her in other movies though). She also needs to gain a little weight. At one point I was distracted by some weirdness in her face - please tell me she did not get botox at her age. Speaking of botox, the other roommate needs to stop with her injections because she looks freakish; she seems pretty otherwise but not a great actress. Heather Graham was OK but her character was one dimensional and not engaging.

Johnny Knoxville had some good moments but in a couple shots he looks old and tired. One of the funniest moments if not the funniest moment was Michael Rosenbaum as the ex-boyfriend - WHY was there not more of him??? He can do comedy.

Virginia Madsen as the ex-wife was annoying and vapid leaving no reason the viewer would want to care about her in the least. You just want to punch her in the face for squandering $200 million dollars (?) in ten years and having NO money for her daughter at all??? Waste product. It would have been more realistic if the daughter did not connect with her instead of her father. Craig Robinson held his own.

The plot is initially interesting and loaded with potential but poor scripting and character inconsistencies bog this storyline.

Ending - no climax and a letdown...

Cute easy watching.

Not sure why all the negative reviews, just watched this and thought it was pretty good.

Clearly was never going to win awards but was a nicely acted movie with some laughs and a feel good ending. Nice way to spend a cold winter night.

I was pleased what i had seen, thanks for individual performances

First of all this movie made me 1) Use my brains and think positive 2) Laugh at least few times 3) Positive mood. So it's definitely not a bad movie! It makes you open your mind a bit, like Sandlers "Click" (but not that good movie IMHO).

Really the backbone of "Father of Invention" are actors performances... K Spacey and J Knoxville are the first ones on my mind, also H Graham performed well. I usually get easily bored by movies, but now i was enjoying the whole 90 minutes (thanks for Spacey). With b-class actors i probably would have disliked the whole movie.

Plot isn't anything special, it has already been used -feeling. I would have hoped to see more of "Inventor"-aspect as there ain't many inventor movies. I think it's possible to make a lot entertainment out of it.

Nice little movie to watch if you don't want anything too serious but no mindless/dirty humour either. By the way this is my only IMDb review so far, i had the urge to write it because i felt so much difference to previous very negative review. This tells something about the movie, i don't usually want to "defend" the movies i like.

Worth watching but I wouldn't recommend it

The movie was so so, It falls short due to the fact that the movie is based on fictional product inventions and with that said, great inventions can't come out of this movie. Otherwise someone would patent the idea and make it an actual product right?

The inventions fall short for obvious reasons and that's expected. They handled it best they could by providing "fabrications" as apposed to actual inventions.

Lack of creativity in the invention ideas is where this movie falls short, as the inventions are driving this movie and steering it in directions that wasn't very enjoyable.

Worth watching but I wouldn't recommend it.
