A great walk during the day and an even better walk at night. It reminded me of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney.

This 18th century cottage was moved brick by brick from England and reassembled in Fitzroy Gardens in the 1930's. There's an admission charge for the house and gardens - $12 a family - but it's worth it to actually go inside and imagine life in such cramped conditions.
There are recordings in the rooms, so you can imagine you're listening to a conversation. I liked reading the account of the house by a woman who's family lived there just before it was sold and moved - how she and her 9 siblings fitted in I'll never know!
So, it's very small, but atmospheric, and the cottage garden is very pretty and contains a chart of what all the different plants were used for, whether food or medicine. Our family also spent ages taking photos with our heads through the cutouts in a photo of an 18th century family - silly, but fun.

The Fitzroy Gardens is a pleant park on the edge of Melbourne's CBD.

The possums that come out to play at night can be a major attraction. They love bread, jam and cream.

While it has not occurred often, be aware that over the years on occasion louts have assaulted some park users.

It appears that a couple of attacks have been 'gay bashings' (of alleged homosexuals).

My comment is not meant to exaggerate or scare off visitors: the chances of anyone sustaining harm are remote, but be aware that occasional night visitors may be inebriated and therefore best avoided.
