Chris Hemsworth officially returns for Extraction 2 on Netflix

The Thor actor revealed the news at Netflix’s Tudum event

Earlier this year, Netflix updated its curious audience on the platform’s top 10 most most-watched movies of all time. At the top was an obvious contender: the down-and-dirty, Chris Hemsworth-led action thriller, Extraction. Produced by the Russo bros. and directed by Avengers: Endgame stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, the movie laced a ’90s-era political thriller with modern direct-to-video action. Two months into a global pandemic, it was a colossal hit. Obviously, we’re getting Extraction 2.

Hemsworth was on hand at Netflix’s Tudum fan event on Saturday to break the news.

“If you thought our first film pushed the limits, wait until you see what Sam and I have planned for this next installment.”

At the end of Extraction, Hemsworth’s black-ops merc Tyler Rake took a bullet to the neck while protecting Ovi, the son of an Indian drug lord. Not too many ways to come back from one of those! But the Russos know what they’re dong, and Extraction ends on a note where a blurry figure that looks a heck of a lot like Rake surfaces in Ovi’s life. Plenty of room for a direct sequel ... or maybe a prequel to Rake’s early days in the Australian army? Heck, Extraction 3 can’t be far behind.

Netflix did not announce a date for Extraction 2. Hemsworth will next be seen in the upcoming Marvel Studios fourquel, Thor: Love and Thunder, due out on May 6, 2022.
