It really says a lot about the Descendents' talent for songwriting, when you realize that you can insert yourself into so many of their lyrics.
I remember first listening to Milo Goes to College back when I was a 14-year-old nerdy, awkward outcast in my freshman year of high school. That album was like my gospel during those years because of how well Milo captured exactly what I was feeling, as a nerdy, awkward outcast who had lots of trouble making friends.
Now, I'm a 20-year-old nerdy, awkward college kid who's somehow managed to make friends, so things are a little different now. But looking at this album from a different but somewhat similar perspective, it's incredible to see how much of it still resonates with me. The title track captures that feeling so well, that it's scary; every word hits me like a brick, particularly the part that says, "Yes, I'm envious, it's true, but it must be cool to be you." Man, that part has so much painful truth in it. Same with "Dog and Pony Show," which also comments on the superficiality of the society that many outcasts think that it would be great to fit into; it has some creative lyricism, too, with Milo likening himself to a "mongrel" that isn't meant to fit into that society anyway. "Mass Nerder" is an anthem for those who still aren't fitting in, telling them to channel their anger and loneliness into getting good grades and making a good future for themselves, bullies be damned.
Most of the songs here, though, seem to be aimed for their older fans, not for people like me. It's like the Descendents were aware of how their fanbase from the 1980s and 1990s probably grew older, grew out of their awkward teenage phases, and had kids and families of their own - because most of the songs are written with that audience in mind. They connect better with an older audience than they do with a younger one. "Talking" is about having communication issues in a marriage. "She Don't Care" is about a nasty divorce. "Maddie" is about a custody battle, and "One More Day" is about his father's death and his regrets over not having a better relationship with him, while "Anchor Grill" is about wishing he could reconnect with his wife at a place that has a lot of significance to them. I don't relate to them, but I can tell that in 10-15 years, when I get to that place in my life, if I'm still listening to Descendents by then, those songs will feel anthemic to me. There's just something about the way that Milo writes that feels so scarily relatable. He has such a talent for writing hard-hitting lyrics that really touch your heart.
Not to mention that this is some of the highest-quality pop punk of the 2000s. I've always loved Milo's voice, but he has REALLY touched it up for this album; he maintains that roughness and edge to it, but with more melody and even a little bit of vibrato every now and then. He sounds excellent. It's incredible that a band that has been around as long as Descendents have could release 14 songs that all manage to sound fresh, original, and energetic. Overall, everything about this album is strong. This is an album that does everything right, lyrically, vocally, and sound-wise. The production is excellent and clear. This is an essential staple of early 2000s pop punk.

Similar to "Everything Sucks" and better than the biggest part of their 80s output.

This is a good solid effort from the Descendents. It still has that something that their old albums had; girls, sex, food and nerd. Milo's singing is a little more well done than on previous albums. The guitars have that classic Egerton quality that no other can attain. The album is really quite consistent; the highlight tracks being "Talking", "Dreams", "Maddie", "One more day" and "Anchor Grill". If you like Everything Sux you will probably like this album.
This has been out since 2004, which was over 6 years ago. It had been 7 years since Everything Sux that this came out. I hope that that there is another Descendents album on the way. If you have heard the 'Merican Ep, there is a song called "I Quit". Hopefully it is not true. I would love to hear another album from these guys.

pretty much the same thing as everything sucks, which it's not a bad thing at all

It's alright... Sounds like some of the songs they may have forgotten to put on Everything Sucks was compiled together to form this one, not memorable. Merican is a sweet tune though.
