Tips for Gouken

Gouken is most effective as a zoning character, but cannot rely on projectiles alone in most matchups. Staying on your feet and becoming familiar with his ground pokes and anti-airs is critical.

Learning how to block on wakeup is important, as his wakeup reversal options are limited and meter dependent. EX Flip can be easily reacted to and walked under for a full punish, having an EX Hurricane blocked leads to a level 3 Focus or neutral jump punish from the entire cast, his backdash is subpar, and all versions of his Counter are throwable.

Choosing to be defensive or offensive with Gouken depends entirely on the matchup. As a rule of thumb, if a character or player has a difficult time getting through his fireballs, continue using them.

Gouken should ideally have at least one EX bar at all times for a potential EX Hurricane anti-air or reversal, or an EX Rush Punch for max damage punishes and hit confirms.

Gouken is a unique character with unusual properties on many of his attacks, as such he takes a fairly long time to become proficient with.
If learned properly, he is a powerful character that can win any matchup.

7) All of 1-6 combined result in a character that without meter, on his wakeup, has NO OPTIONS. He can try to poke but it'll get beat or counter hit, he can backdash and eat option selects, he can throw but likely get stuffed because backthrow is so freaking slow, or he can parry as a total guess and either guess right every so often, or get armor broken, thrown, or outguessed. Risk doesn't outweigh reward. So get ready for LOTS of matches where after one knockdown at the start with no meter, you get ambiguously and safely assaulted every wakeup until you are dizzy and eat the perfect. Smart opponents with even half a brain just won't respect you and non-stop assault you on wakeup and you'll lose more often than not. SCREW YOU CAPCOM. If you have meter, that opens up the option for EX-tatsu... but smart opponents can just patiently try to bait it out. Even if they eat 3 ex-tatsus in a match, all it takes is one whiff and you eat max damage punish, easily losing 50% or way more of health. Plus then you're out of meter and back to eating one more wake-up assault and being dead.

Gouken is crippled and has piss for attacks, and even PISS for defense options. MUCH too often, UNLIKE the rest of the cast, his ONLY option is to try to GUESS what direction to block. You just have to sit there and take the disrespecting non-stop assault. Get ready for all the players that will just non-stop hit buttons and do sh** without thinking at ALL about what you'll do.... because truthfully they don't have to. Gouken can get LUCKY and hit them away once, resetting the dynamics of the match... but that luck can only last so long when the odds are never in his favor. I win plenty with him, and it is satisfying... but the losses when you CORRECTLY read your opponent and simply can't punish quickly enough or when you can't do anything to stop your opponent from just non-stop harassing you.... are frustrating beyond belief.

Gouken will lose because he has no options in a game that rewards you for attacking. He can't safely attack to get a knockdown or cause chip damage, and can't even defend without risking a lot, and that's with meter. It doesn't matter if he hits like a truck. Good luck getting a hit off in the first place. Nice balancing job, Crapcom. You handicapped Gouken to bottom tier garbage. He gets non-stop disrespected by assault-crazed opponents and the risk-reward of trying to out-think the opponent is so biased against him, you just have to eat perfects for having TRIED to even play the game and do ANYTHING. Capcom created a character made to be disrespected and perfected. Even Dan gets respected on wakeup. Screw you, Capcom.

Gouken is rewarding to play as because if you manage to win, you REALLY out-thought your opponent. However, get ready to eat losses constantly because of a crippled character.

1) Gouken's pokes have no reach (cr.lp) or have reach and are too slow (any other), and thus get beat out. He has crap footsies. Have fun in those Elena fights, with her wonky hurtbox. Screw you Capcom.

2) Gouken has essentially no combos from pokes, if you manage to actually poke somebody. You can try to hit a tight link into a palm or tatsu, but if you miss, you get punished. It's best to simply not bother thinking he can do anything from pokes. The risk isn't worth the reward because the punishment is so freaking huge. And crouching mp into fireball does NOT combo unless you're so close to the opponent that using cr.mp would get beat out by a faster, shorter poke by the opponent. This crappy alternative to the Ryu-esque cr.mk>fireball is sh**. Screw you Capcom.

3) No safe specials. Even light palm eats DPs on block. THIS IS BS in a game this that's gone through this many iterations. The only viable characters at this point are grapplers, which Gouken is not, and characters that can attack SAFELY, i.e., characters that can either use chipping specials that are safe on block and/or can poke quickly and get that poke to link to SAFE specials leading to knockdown and then have the advantage as the opponent gets up, and repeat, repeat, repeat. Gouken has NOTHING safe, so if your opponent has a decent walk speed and can dodge some fireballs, you really can't do anything that isn't a total gamble. Whatever you try is either safe but leads to nothing (shi**y pokes), or unsafe and will be punished. Screw you Capcom.

4) EX-tatsu has the worst recovery in the game. Easily eats a full-focus. Screw you Capcom.

5) EX-parry loses to armor breaking moves (Adon, Crim.Viper, and the like can go braindead on you) and throws. Screw you Capcom.

6) Backdash is slow and barely moves him, so you get option selected on your wakeup and can't do jack-sh** about it. Screw you Capcom.
