Mirror matches tend to be horrible, but there's one that's actually incredibly interesting

The latest fighting game video exploration from Theory Fighter hones in on one of the most awkward situations in the genre: the mirror match.

Theory Fighter starts out by explaining how terrible mirror matches (when your opponent plays the same character as you) can be, but then transitions over to one in particular that happens to offer a near perfect setting for two players to simply display their match up knowledge and fighting game skill.

Street Fighter 6's future will look like this past game in the franchise

Street Fighter 6 is going to evolve to resemble one of the most beloved games in the entire franchise, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. This is the case that Cujo Kate and I make on the first episode of Jon & Kate +8 on Block.

Parries didn't start out as a dominant force in Street Fighter 3 initially, as it took players multiple years to understand how to use them and for the designers at Capcom to improve them in the third iteration of the game.

Fan uses River City Ransom as an inspiration to create fun sprites of Street Fighter 3 and Street Fighter 6 characters

River City Ransom, a video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1989, would come to be known as "Street Gangs" in the PAL regions. Though it was a game designed to be an open world beat 'em up, the theme of the game feels like it would fit nicely within the Street Fighter universe, especially considering how Street Fighter 6's World Tour mode functions as a beat 'em up and fighting game hybrid.

It seems that one fan of River City Ransom and Street Fighter, Togashicaro, has opted to recreated Street Fighter character sprites as a homage to River City Ransom. More specifically, recreations for combatants in Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and Street Fighter 6 have been released on Twitter.

Most people will hear a baby beaver crying for its mother, Street Fighter fans hear something else entirely...

We won't split hairs over where it specifically lands on the top Street Fighter bangers of all time, but "You Blow My Mind," Dudley's theme music from Third Strike is easily one of the most memorable and beloved tracks in the franchise's three and a half decade long audio library.

In no small part that's thanks to the somewhat peculiar first few notes that capture attention and lead us into the jazzy groove. Pinpointing exactly what instrument said notes are played on can be difficult, as it turns out they're actually the cries of a baby beaver.

Early registration leaderboard so far for Evo 2024 with Street Fighter 6 currently having the most entrants

Back in February, the Evo 2024 lineup was revealed to us. The games that will be playable this year are Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, Under Night In-Birth 2 Sys:Celes, Mortal Kombat 1, Guilty Gear Strive, King of Fighters 15, and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.

All the characters who survived Raging Demon, Street Fighter's 'deadliest' attack

Of all the iconic techniques in Street Fighter, one stands above the heap as the single most powerful: Raging Demon. The reason? It not only sees the victim attacked with countless physical strikes, all of which are potentially deadly, but also attacks their very soul with a karmic force fueled by the weight of all their sins in life.

This move is practiced primarily by one character, Akuma, who strives to be the most powerful fighter on the planet. The thing is, as powerful as Akuma is, he's actually landed Raging Demon a handful of times (both in and seemingly outside of canon) and almost every victim has, for one reason or another, walked away from the encounter. Continue on to see whom and how.

Street Fighter 3 developer's comment from 1997 suggests that Ryu shouldn't be able to use Denjin Hadoken by Street Fighter 6

The Denjin Charge is a powerful technique employed by Ryu in Street Fighter 6 that empowers the next usage of his Hadoken, Hashogeki, and his level 1 Super Art. It's all reminiscent of the Denjin Hadoken Super Art used by Ryu starting in Street Fighter 3.

On July 27, 1997, the Fan Book Gamest Mook Volume 81 was released in Japan a few months after Street Fighter 3: New Generation that contained some interesting comments regarding Ryu and the rest of the cast. Scotia recently provided some translations of what the developers had to say about characters in Street Fighter 3.

Every super in Street Fighter 3 gets impressively parried then punished with a crazy combo in Desk's latest showcase

Combo creator Desk has his parry skills on point. We've seen the exceptionally talented content creator pull off all kinds of difficult to execute parries across a variety of different games, and even seen him recreate the legendary Evo Moment 37 parry sequence a few times too.

In his latest showcase, however, Desk takes a trip back to the past to dig deeper into the first game in the Street Fighter 3 series: New Generation. With this being the vanilla version of the game, there are all kinds of crazy things you can do that may not have been fully intentional, and the combo wizard's mission this time around is to parry every super (that can be parried) in the game. Spoiler alert: Desk succeeds.

Daigo trolls Justin Wong hard in Street Fighter-themed Chipotle commercial

Believe it or not more time has passed since Evo 2023 than remains before Evo 2024, and the fighting game community has already begun preparing to make the yearly trip to Las Vegas as we got our official Evo 2024 lineup reveal earlier this week.

If you missed the live stream then you may not have seen the new Evo Chipotle commercial that's specially tailored for the FGC. The spot features commentators Sajam and Vicious, as well as a particularly deep burn between two legends of Street Fighter: Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong.

Debating the top 10 strongest characters in all of Street Fighter

Usually when we talk about character strength it's in relation to competitive tier lists, but this week Catalyst, MajinTenshinhan, and myself decided to dig into the canonical lore of Street Fighter and discuss (debate) which fighters from over the years are technically the most powerful within the world Capcom has created.

There are a ton of potential potholes to step in here as the franchise story has been told over the course of 35 years by different people and out of chronological order, and is beholden to the not-so-conducive-for-storytelling fighting game format that tends to be filled with a ton of non-canonical "what if?" scenarios. Needless to say, we don't exactly see eye to eye on some of our picks.

Why Akuma is top tier in almost every game he's in

Far and away the Street Fighter character with the highest tier placement record across franchise history is Akuma. The wildly popular demonic fighter has been one of the matter of fact top tiers in most games he's appeared in, and more than once he's been outright banned from competitive play for being so strong he makes the game feel pointless.

He's now on his way to Street Fighter 6 and we're all but expecting him to be among the best this time around, but SF6 is noticeably more balanced than virtually any other vanilla (initial) version of Street Fighter to date, and this next level of understanding by devs could mean a more fair Akuma. To shed more light on the matter we've produced a video exploring why exactly it seems Akuma is so consistently good.

California university features course on fighting games that assigns playing Street Fighter 3: Third Strike for homework

Video games, programming and other forms of digital media are becoming more popular offerings in classrooms around the United States, but we hadn't really seen one specifically focusing on fighting games before.

That is apparently unless you live or plan to go to school around Northern California where students can earn credits for throwing Hadokens.

This Is How You Make A Fighting Game Character Interesting

Though he wasn't my favorite to fight against (those V-Trigger comebacks still haunt from time to time) it's undeniable that G was one of the most impactful new additions to the Street Fighter roster. Part of this was due to his interesting, Abe Lincoln-inspired design as a powerful and charismatic president of the earth with cool enough powers and abilities, but another hugely significant factor was G's mysterious contributions to the franchise's emerging, non-linearly told story.

Say what you will about G's bombastic gameplay presence, but those who watched through his and some of his fellow DLC character Street Fighter 5 story threads saw that Capcom seemed to be setting up for two particularly interesting moves. The first of these was the fact that G seemed to be taking the Street Fighter story into apocalyptic waters that could not be reversed, the second was in his apparent connections (and potential to shed new light on) the franchise's other most mysterious character: Q.

Desk takes on Capcom's worst fighting game to parry and style on the Darkstalkers, Red Earth dinosaurs and more like nowhere else

What should have been a celebration of Capcom fighting games 20 years ago ended up on the same level as an old fan-made mashup beloved by basically no one, but at least it's still good for something.

The one and only Desk recently took on the all-time stinker of Capcom Fighting Evolution to parry and style on the game's cast pulled from Darkstalkers, Red Earth, Street Fighter Alpha and more.
