Champions League final: Man City complete Treble with win over Inter Milan - reaction

After a record-breaking six months, Manchester City's Julian Alvarez has booked his place in history as the first player to win a treble of European Cup, league and domestic cup - and a World Cup - in the same season.

Nine players before the 23-year-old Argentine forward had won the European Cup or Champions League and the World Cup in the same season - but none had won the domestic double as well.

Alvarez finishes the season as City's second top scorer with 17 goals, despite starting fewer than half their games, and was the third top scorer at the 2022 World Cup.

City won the Premier League title by five points from Arsenal, beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final and saw off Inter Milan in the Champions League final - after Argentina beat France in the World Cup final in December.

Alvarez did not get on the pitch in their 1-0 win over Inter in Istanbul but still got his hands on the trophy afterwards.

Match-winning goalscorer Rodri made his 52nd start of the season for Manchester City.

Across Pep Guardiola's managerial career, the only outfield player to have started more games in a single campaign under him was Lionel Messi in 2011-12 (57).

Manchester City’s victory was their 300th under Pep Guardiola, in his 413th game in charge of the club.

The next most wins of an English team in that time is Liverpool's 237.

Inter keeper Andre Onana told Sky Sport: "We had a great game. We had very clear chances and were unlucky. If you don't score at this level, you lose. I am happy about what the team did. We will play these games again."

Inter defender Federico Dimarco told SportMediaset: "We're disappointed to have lost the most important game and disappointed to have played on equal terms with a team built to win the competition. Sadly, we didn't score.

"This final has to be a starting point, not an end point, for what Inter showed this season. We're really disappointed."

What an achievement, the Treble.

They wanted the Champions League and to do it with a Treble while beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final, wow.

This is a special achievement.

Pep Guardiola is delighted with tonight's victory but he doesn't want the single success against Inter Milan tonight to overshadow the achievements of his players during his seven years at the club.

Tonight was his 12th trophy, excluding Community Shields, which is a pretty impressive effort.

"What we have done in terms of titles in the last six years is unbelievable."

"Maybe they will open a museum so the fans can look at the trophies."

Erling Haaland is the third player to finish a season as the top scorer in a Champions League trophy for different clubs.

He netted 10 for Borussia Dortmund in 2020-21 and 12 for City this season.

Andriy Shevchenko (Dynamo Kyiv, AC Milan) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Real Madrid) were the others to do it.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland speaking to BT Sport: "Unbelievable. In my wildest dreams I would never think of this. It shows it's possible for a guy from a small hometown in Norway. It gives hope to younger people in the indoor hall in my hometown. It's unbelievable.

"Having good people around me my whole life and ones that I can trust is important. To have my father and mother around me here is fantastic. I'm so happy.

"After a couple of days when this settles a bit and this feeling of winning this trophy, I will want to do it again for sure. I know myself and I know this is how I will think.

"I can improve a lot. I can improve on today. I was close a couple of times in the first half. I could have got the ball from Ilkay Gundogan in the first half but he played to Jack Grealish.

"On a good day I could have scored two goals but I don't care about that right now. In finals the only thing is winning. It's about performing as a team to get the trophy."

On working with Pep Guardiola: "Really emotional. It's the same for me as well. It's such a big game. The pressure is unbelievable. To work with him is really special. We have a good relationship and I look forward to next seaosn to develop even more. I'm still young. I have a lot of years left. To be getting trained by him every single day, the best coach in the world, is a good place to be."

Wearing Mario Balotelli's shirt as a kid: "I would never think of this. I think I still have that jersey. Especially my goal at Old Trafford, I really enjoyed that. It's what life is about really."

On next season: "We have to defend what we have achieved this season. That's how it works. In a month everything is forgotten and we have to start again."

Pep Guardiola has warned Real Madrid that Manchester City are after them.

Real have won 14 Champions Leagues, City have won one.

"We are on our way," he joked.

"If they fall asleep, we will be catching them."

Pep Guardiola says he got a message from Sir Alex Ferguson this morning that 'touched' him.

He says it is 'an honour' to also have won the Treble alongside the former Manchester United boss.

Pep Guardiola has just been applauded into the press conference room by the media.

Theo: You need luck to win finals and City had their fair share tonight but overall we deserved to win the CL… Inter played a brilliant tactical game and had much more energy.

Manchester City are still waiting for the result of the 115 Premier League financial charges against the club.

In February, City were charged with breaches of the league's financial rules from 2009 to 2018. They were also accused of not cooperating since the investigation began in December 2018.

City have denied financial wrongdoing and say their innocence is supported by a "body of irrefutable evidence" and they "look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all".

A two-year ban from European competitions for breaching Uefa's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) in 2020, but City were fined 10m euros (£8.67m) for obstructing the investigation.

Last month, boss Pep Guardiola said: "What I would like is if the Premier League and judges could make something as soon as possible.

"Then, if we have done something wrong, everybody will know it and, if we are like we believe as a club for many years, [done things] in the right way, then the people will stop talking about it."

Manchester is only the second city with two different European Cup or Champions League winners after Milan.

If someone had told me in the aftermath of Manchester United's Treble in 1999 that the next English team to do it would be Manchester City, I wouldn't have believed them.

When United did it by beating Bayern Munich in Barcelona, City had just escaped from the third tier of English football.

It was three years before Manchester held the Commonwealth Games, allowing City to leave Maine Road, which was one of the attractions for Sheikh Mansour when he led the Abu Dhabi backed purchase of the club that transformed City's fortunes in 2008.

More from Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi: "It's normal to have regrets. Losing is the worst thing in sport. At the same time, the players need to be proud of the season and the performance in the final. We played against a great opponent but we clearly didn't deserve to lose.

"I would like to hug every single one of the Inter fans, just like my players. They are fantastic - they are always there for us.

"This is football - it's from these disappointments that you grow. I'm still wondering how it's possible that we didn't score at the end. We clearly deserved more.

"This final could be the fuel to try again next season. The team demonstrated they can play at this level. We plenty of chances at the end, we deserved more. This was our gameplan and we could have done even better."
