France is poised to host the 2024 Paris Olympics with thousands of athletes scheduled to converge on the capital for the biggest summer games ever in July.
To mark the start of the event, the flame in the Greek city was also lit on Monday at the Temple of Hera in Olympia.
According to the organizers, they expect packed stadiums and a glittering opening ceremony in the heart of the city along its main artery: the Seine River.
The flame was lit by actors dressed as priestesses at the birthplace of the ancient Olympics and will be set off in a relay race to light the cauldron, marking the start of the Games.
The first games recorded in history were in 776 BC.
In ancient Olympia, the flame was considered to burn continuously in a sanctuary, showing the eternal spirit of the Games.
To begin with, the first relay is a 5,000 km route across Greece that will last more than 11 days, with over 600 torchbearers from star athletes and other members of the mass.
It will end at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens where the flame will be handed over to the organizers of the Paris Olympics.
The flame will leave for Marseilles on a three-masted ship, the “Belem”, where about 150,000 people await it.
He is expected to arrive in France on May 8, starting the second round of the relay. It will burn continuously until the closing ceremony.
