He appeared in "The Ringer" (1931), "Waltzes from Vienna" (1933), "Contraband" (1940), "Black Narcissus" (1947), "The Red Shoes" (1948), "Richard III" (1955), "Peeping Tom" (1960), "The Winter's Tale" (1968), "Robin and Marian" (1976), and also worked in the TV series "I, Claudius" (1976) as Domitius. He fought in World War II, where he received and injury which left him temporarily blind. He was also an accomplished painter. He was married to actress Nora Swinburne from 1946 until his death.
