Rate this book
This is the moving and extraordinary story of the kidnapping that has caused the greatest concern in Mexican public opinion. The abduction of Ernestina Sodi and her sister, the actress Laura Zapata, was perpetrated by a band of professionals, who are now incarcerated. The sisters were taken hostage in 2002, and Ernestina Sodi remained captive for three months, until her younger sister, the singer Thalia, came up with the ransom. Ernestina Sodi endured physical and psychological abuses that left deep wounds in her life and that of her family. This book is the painful account of her confinement. Through its pages we penetrate the dark, violent, and merciless world of organized crime; Sodi is a witness to desperation, impotence, rage, and infinite fear, but also the luminous hope of freedom.

Listened to the Audiobook which was read by the author in Spanish. I think I finished it in one sitting! I was interested in this book because I am originally from Mexico, and I remember following this story as it was happening/shown in the news. Organized crime is sadly extremely common, and this book provides a firsthand account of events. Thank you for sharing your story, Ernestina! I'm glad you made it home...

⭐️⭐️✨ for the actual narration

Made the mistake of listening to this in English - it sounds like the narrator either doesn’t normally have an accent or is reeeeeally dramatizing it so that it’s over the top.

4 stars for the actual content:
Overall a very descriptive and powerful retelling of what Ernestina lived through.

Maybe it was the translation. I didn't enjoy the writing at all. Ernestina Sodi tells the story of her kidnapping, along with one of her sisters, in Mexico. She is a writer, who comes from a well-known family, with both an actress and a famous and wealthy Mexican singer. I suppose being kidnapped and held for ransom is pretty dramatic, but the writing was melodramatic and banal. However, it gave me insight into what it's like to live in Mexico if you are known as a person of means. I read it for a bilingual reading group (I read in English because I'm only starting to acquire Spanish).

I did enjoy this book but it took me a while to read...it was a book that I could put down and pick up days later...maybe this was because of the translation.
