I recently bought Backless to replace a copy that I lost years ago. While it doesn't have a monstrous hit like Cocaine on it, I dare say it's a better album than Slowhand. Backless came out one year after Slowhand and uses almost the same line-up of musicians. However, I think it's a more even listening experience and does have some classic Clapton songs on it. It hasn't been reissued on vinyl but you can get it digitally, or there are still a few sealed records from back in the day floating around. (That's what I bought.) All in all I'd recommend this album to any Eric Clapton fan no matter how casual. It really is a criminally overlooked record in his catalog.

Eric Clapton followed up his monstrous album Slowhand with this release that largely sticks to the same formula, which is laid back, Tulsafied, English-Country-Blues Rock. While this album is a great Eric Clapton record, it lacks in that some of the songs are just not up to par with what Clapton had recorded in the past. "Roll it" is, besides some nice guitar playing, a throwaway, and though I do enjoy "Tell me that you Love Me" and "Golden Ring", they are not as strong lyrically as what was on Slowhand. And even though "Promises" and "Walk out in the Rain" are great songs, what really saves this album is Clapton's guitar playing (which is very J.J Cale like on this record) and his hot shot band. Eric's band that he used for most of the Seventies was always great live, and when in the studio, they always provided very ample backing and complimented Eric's style quite nicely. It is also the last full studio album that he would make with them, and in a way makes this album somewhat bittersweet. A few shabby songs aside, this album is still essential for any causal or serious Eric Clapton Fan to add to their collection.
Another note: It always struck me as funny as how Eric pretty much mastered the "Tulsa Sound" that Leon Russell and J.J Cale started before him, especially considering he is English. Even better, this record would mark the second time Eric covered a Don Williams tune.

Let me start by saying I have never been a huge Clapton fan. I like certain songs here and there, but I bought this many many years ago when it was released, and loved it all. Have not heard it for decades. Just purchased using Amazon Cloud. This is a fantastic album. Yes he has a huge back catalog, but these songs get you moving. Please check it out if you haven't already got it.

The music of Eric Clapton on this album is very good. All Eric Clapton up to 1990 is enjoyable, entertaining, and extremely pleasing to the senses.

One of the great Clapton albums.
Re-issues usually have poor artwork and no liner notes. This one is a faithful copy of the original.
Sound is great. "Backless", "Slowhand", and "The Road To Escondido" are my three favorite non-live Clapton albums.
"Walk Out In The Rain", "Tulsa Time", and J.J.Cale's excellent "I'll Make Love To You Anytime" are standouts, but not a bad song on the album.
EC fans, you need this!

Si on en a pas assez de Slowhand, Backless peut faire l'affaire. Dans tous les cas à reevaluer comme l'ensemble de la disco de Clapton dans les années 70...
