Product Description

Synopsis: East German defector turned CIA agent, Alex Holbeck (Martin Sheen) is assigned to discover the names of five Soviet dissidents targeted by a ruthless KGB hit squad. In order to stop this diabolic plot, Holbeck must infiltrate Soviet intelligence and obtain information from Enigma, a Russian computer component. But when he arrives in Berlin, his cover is blown and Holbeck quickly seeks shelter with his former lover, Karen. But as they get deeper in this deadly game of pursuit, Alex must outwit the assassins before they fall into the hands of the enemy.

A bit dificult to review disc 2 of 3 without generalising for the series. You will only buy this if you got disc one and liked that anyway.

The nuts and bolts: well drawn, nothing jars (such as poor frame rate). Sound is good. Subtitles pretty much agree with the English soundtrack, so you wont miss too much info if you listen to the Japanese (which is always more fun anyway).

The story. Not really a gripping tale; I kept watching to see where it was going. Of course, there was no resolution - that's for the next series! (Please give us the funds to make another series Mr Producer...) No, it's the human relationship aspect that really hooked me. I imagine anyone who has moved around alot residentially will appreciate this story and the lesson it gives. It wasn't what I expected going into it, but I liked it a lot by the end.

One weird aspect which may be the culture gap between Asia & ROW: the story could almost be aimed at 10 year olds (and up)and then BANG! the girls are all in the bath together. More nudity here than in Love Hina, Chobits and others of similar ilk. I'm not complaining mind, but the 16 up age restriction must have limited the market.

So, with regard to the above - 4 stars. There is better out there and this is not essential viewing, but you won't come away feeling you've wasted your money.

“” which I didn't expect a great deal of Enigma, but it turned out to be excellent. It’s a Cold War spy flick similar to a LeCarre plot, with violence adequate to the story, and a TON of suspense. Great, convincing cast that knows how to underplay tension. Besides the basic jeopardy, there are a couple of layers of intrigue on top. Loved it.

This movie follows a fictional plot, that was taken from a true historical sequence. The real enigma machine was mechanical, not electronic, and was developed, by Nazi Germany, early in WW2, to exchange encrypted text messages with military units in the field. In true enigma history, a machine was stolen, and debris was staged to make it look like the stolen machine was destroyed in an accident. The allies used this machine, extensively, to fight the war with a huge intelligence advantage. The movie story was updated to make the movie more interesting. The true account of the enigma is told in a non-fiction book: "A Man Called Intrepid".

It goes back to the 80s to I think it reflects the type of relationship and cold war with Russia accurately. Solid acting. 4.5 stars. A thoughtful plot that is realistic.

This film explores the complexity of human nature. Personal and global relationships intertwine in intricate ways that reveal the characters of the three principals and a tier of secondary persona. Cold-War-era values of the United States, the U. S. S. R, and East Germany are juxtaposed against the passions and principles of these individuals.

The plot requires attention, and this is rewarded with post-viewing moments of realization that enhance the experience. The acting is convincing; the photography, costumes, and dialogue provide the authenticity that made the movie soar. One minor observation: this reviewer does not remember seeing in this spy-vs-spy adventure a single firearm. Firepower, that sine qua non of today's action films, seems to have been replaced here by brainpower - the characters spend a lot of time trying to understand what the other side is up to. What this says about how our human nature is evolving will be left to the reader.

Although there seemed to be a splicing error in the download from Amazon, this was a minor distraction. Enigma deserves more acclaim than it has received. It is a thought-provoking classic that entertains. More movies of this caliber would give Hollywood a good name.

I'm not sure how this movie got to be rated PG. It had full frontal nudity. When I got to that scene I shut it off. I understand they were trying to show the terrible things the Soviet Union was doing during the Cold War, but it was a bit much for me. I was looking for a cool Cold War spy movie without a bunch of garbage in it.

There is all kinds of spots and specs on this film especially near the beginning and it's more like a very average older DVD than a blu-ray. The sound is mono and ok. This film though is very good and surely deserves better treatment than this. It's old (Sam Neil looks very young) and is set in Cold-War Berlin. The story is very interesting and extremely interesting in several places, and has a great ending. Unlike a lot of modern films with meaningless gunfire, stuff exploding and rubbish car chases, this has none of that, just a well crafted story with lots of action of types you just don't see in modern films. Recommended and if only it was better visual quality.

Having seen a very poor VHS rental copy of this movie in the 80's &, more recently, a full-frame 4:3 DVD release - with a very wobbly sound effects track - that came free with a national newspaper, I was delighted to stumble across a blu-ray version of this movie.

Although the picture quality is only slightly better than the DVD release, the sound effects problem has been rectified & it is in it's original widescreen ratio. The packaging mistakenly refers to the disc being region A only but it will playback on region B blu-ray players as well.

The film itself is very good with Martin Sheen & Sam Neill on top form. The supprting cast (especially Derek Jacobi) are terrific too. It may be low-key in terms of box office sucess but a highly recommended thriller all the same.
