The End of the Movie
Featuring
The End of the Movie Lyrics
So this is the end of the movie
Woah, woah, woah
But real life isn't a movie
No, no, no
You want things to be wrapped up neatly
The way that stories do
You're looking for answers
But answers aren't looking for you
Because life is a gradual series of revelations
That occur over a period of time
It's not some carefully crafted story
It's a mess, and we're all gonna die
If you saw a movie that was like real life
You'd be like, "What the hell was that movie about?
It was really all over the place."
Life doesn't make narrative sense
Nuh-uh
(Spoken Interlude)
[DARRYL]
You don't want to have a baby, do you?
No, I don't think so
[DARRYL]
What are we gonna do?
[WHITE JOSH]
I don't know
(Song)
[JOSH GROBAN]
We tell ourselves that we're in a movie
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Each one of us thinks we've got the starring role
Role, role, role
But the truth is, sometimes you're the lead
And sometimes you're an extra
Just walking by in the background
Like me, Josh Groban!
Because life is a gradual series of revelations
That occur over a period of time
Some things might happen that seem connected
But there's not always a reason or rhyme
And their choices don't always make sense
That being said, it's really messed-up
That you banged your ex-boyfriend's dad
Oh, never bang your ex-boyfriend's dad
About
This song occurs in Season 3, Episode 4 of the show (“Josh’s Ex-Girlfriend Is Crazy”), in which Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) gets a call from ex-boyfriend Greg (Santino Fontana), only to have him explain that it was only a butt dial. Arriving when Rebecca is already at a low point, it sends her into a spiral that results in her sleeping with Greg’s father (Robin Thomas).
A recurring theme of the show is that Rebecca is making herself miserable by trying to fit her love life into the patterns provided to her by romantic movies. In this scene, as Rebecca walks down a deserted street after the sex, Josh Groban sings over the soundtrack and eventually materializes in the background to tell her what she’s doing wrong.
Like the episode’s other song, “Scary Sexy Lady”, the scene is accompanied by a credits scroll. Rebecca Bunch is credited for every role, including First and Second Assistant for multiple jobs, “Carbs Services”, “Cheese Services”, “Candy Services”, “2nd 2nd AD”, “3rd 3th AD”, “6th-10th AD”, and “Shrub Wrangler”.

In an interview with Vulture, Rachel Bloom said,
Aline [Brosh McKenna] and I sat down with Adam [Schlesinger] and we just started thinking, “What are all of the things we want to say in the song?” Life isn’t a story. Life is a gradual series of revelations that occur over a period of time. And that became the first lyric! It was us trying to songwrite with what Aline’s gut had been.
