As I've said many times, I really love this author and I'm enjoying this series. I think I'm half in love with the Earl, Ben. He is the investigator that people call in when they have a difficult situation to solve. He's fabulous and intriguing but his wife, Alicia, is brilliant too. If you're a fan of this author and you liked Ruined By Moonlight: A Whispers of Scandal Novel , then I think you'll enjoy this book, which is a continuation. The 2 star reviewer is correct that this book is more of a mystery than about the romance but I so enjoy the romance between the Earl and his wife. This book put me in a good mood.

I'm reading through this author's work again and it's such a treat. Here the Earl is called in to help a widow because her two late husbands were killed by someone using poison. She was the main suspect but was cleared. She comes to the earl because she's in love again but doesn't want to marry her lover because she's afraid for his life. Ben gets involved and of course his wife has to help along the way but she's not annoying at all. I thoroughly enjoyed re-reading this book and wish that the author would write another in this series.

A Very Mysterious Romance Book

This is the second book in Emma Wildes Whispers of Scandal Novel series. Her first was Ruined by Midnight where the characters of Benjamin and Alicia Wallace, the Earl and Lady Heathton are introduced. If you haven't read it you should before this book as the plot lines are continuous. In Improper Rumors, Wildes weaves an interesting and intriguing story of revenge, envy, and evil. But she also creates tender and warm love stories of not just Angelina De Brooke and Christopher Lowe but of the Heathtons.

A very refreshing concept in romance novels where there are simultaneous characters who relationships are developed as the plot unfolds. A that plot is not the usual in Historical romances. It has a tang of a mystery which enhances the story and the people. It gave me the love story and the mystery, a perfect combination and a delightful change.

Best of all the villain is still at large so we know there is another book in the future. It is risky to keep two characters continuing in multiple books but Wildes does if beautifully. The flow of the book is smooth and there are no distractions by the author going back and forth between the couples.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you are looking for some fine writing and a different slant on romance this is the book for you. I can hardly wait for the next whisper of a scandal.

I'm not great at coming up with headings for these reviews, but Wildes' Whispers of Scandals series (this is Book 2) is just that--nicely done. The books aren't brilliant, but they're an enjoyable read--i got through this in one afternoon and I easily get distracted by chores, computers, whatever. It was definitely the characters that drew me in and kept me intrigued--there are two couples, as there were in Ruined by Moonlight (Book 1): the Earl of Heathton and his wife, the "sleuths" in this romance/mystery and the couple in trouble--Lord Lowe and Lady DeBrooke. The story expands on the relationship between the former couple and develops the relationship between the other two. It is a delicate balance Wildes walks, to make two couples the h/H but I like the premise and I'm already looking forward to the next in the series. My only complaint was I guessed very early on who the minor villain was (if authors don't want readers to guess, they need more potential suspects written in) and the major villain has not been revealed (the big reveal won't occur until the last book in the series--just guessing). It actually works here but it's not a plot device I like very much

A Mystery, not a romance

This was a strange book. And really if this book had been labeled a mystery I probably would have given it more stars. Emma Wildes is a great writer, and I've loved all her books, but this one was not a romance. I'm not even sure who the hero and heroine was supposed to be. There were two couples in the book, but one was married and happily so, and the other couple was in love, though they had to hide it because of the mysterious killer in the book.

The married couple was a little boring and the only problem to conquer here (in their relationship) was that he wouldn't say I love you to her. The other couple had already fallen in love and because someone had killed off her two other husbands, she kept their relationship secret. This might have been a better romance if this couple had some misunderstandings or other blocks to their relationship. But there wasn't.

I think the author, in order to write something "different" stepped out of the genre all together. I hope the next book goes back to the old formula, because I won't buy it on blind faith. I'll research it a little before I spend 7.99 again.
