The Crown’s Emma Corrin details Diana scene she struggled with 'Nearly couldn't do it'

THE CROWN star Emma Corrin has confessed she found one scene in the hit Netflix series particularly hard to film, in which Diana tried reaching out to Prince Charles.

Prince Harry: Emma Corrin 'grateful' for verdict on The Crown

Talking about scenes where Princess Diana performed a dance and song for Prince Charles (played by Josh O'Connor) in attempts to show how much she loved him, Emma Corrin admitted she "almost couldn't do it". Netflix isn't afraid to demonstrate some of the gritty realities of Buckingham Palace in , and Emma's portrayal of Diana wasn't always an easy thing for the 25-year-old to film.

She said ahead of season four: "I remember there were two days in a row, with the dance and then the song that Diana performs for Charles.

"On the second day we did the song and they got in the actual west end cast to support me.

"I am a singer, I can sing, but I hadn't done it for a while and it was incredibly exposing to be on this stage with these professionals.

"The tempo of the music was different to the version I had learnt so it was terrifying and I thought I wouldn't be able to do it.

"At the same time, this is the scene in which Diana goes through something hugely emotional, this is her reaching out to Charles to show him that she loves him, and I very nearly couldn't do it.

"The ADs/director were like, we get it, this is huge, take all the time you need."

The scene saw Diana performing to her husband in attempts to win back his love and save their crumbling marriage.

It proved to be a heavy one to film when coupled with the added pressure of Emma having to perform on stage.

She added: "Feeling that support of everyone around is so great, you know that they have got you, you know they understand what we are creating."

Emma took on the huge role of Princess Diana in season four of the Netflix royal drama.

Having landed on the streaming platform in 2016, the series has been a huge success, with a host of big names in the cast and a strong fanbase constantly waiting for the next instalments.

Since the Duke of Edinburgh's death last month at the age of 99, both old and new audiences have begun to binge on the show once again.

The performance scene isn't the only Diana moment the cast found difficult.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, director Benjamin Caron detailed one scene in particular that he hid away from the rest of the crew.

Talking about the hugely significant episode in season four, episode three - Fairytale - Benjamin explained how he often allows the cast to find the deepest depths of their characters.

The episodes explored Prince Charles' proposal to Diana, with her moving into Buckingham Palace and finding her life filled with princess training, loneliness and tragedy.

When asked about a scene that showed Princess Diana dancing alone in the palace in a ballet outfit by herself, Benjamin admitted that he wouldn't allow the crew to watch.

The scene sees no dialogue and simply shows the princess, who has become increasingly isolated, break into a ballet sequence.

He said: "You know, I always talk about a relationship with actors, about giving them permission to fail about and allowing them to take themselves into a space which they're forgetting themselves and allowing themselves to go further than they might do without constraints being judged or being watched.

"And so we yeah, we pulled everyone out. It was just me, the camera [and Emma] and actually, we played Cher, Believe, a piece of music I think Emma had a real connection with.

"It didn't matter to me, because we were going to replace the music later on.

"But it was something that I think she felt that she could sort of throw herself around the room too."

The Crown is available to watch on Netflix.
