Embrace’s accident-and-illness plans allow customers to choose a deductible, a reimbursement rate, and an annual coverage limit to customize their policy’s premium. The company also has an accident-only plan, which doesn’t allow customization of the deductible, reimbursement rate, and coverage limit.
Embrace has some of the lowest average monthly rates among insurers in our rating, for both cats and dogs. It also offers savings opportunities, including a discount for insuring multiple pets, military discounts, and the Healthy Pet Deductible, which can lower annual deductibles by $50 for every year you aren’t reimbursed for a claim.
One potential drawback for owners of older pets: Pets over 14 years old can only be enrolled in an accident-only plan. But if a pet has accident-and-illness coverage prior to turning 15, that coverage continues for life. The company states it will not change or drop coverage due to a pet’s age.
Embrace may raise its rates over time due to factors such as pet age, increases in vet costs, and pet population trends.
Embrace can be a solid choice for those who want flexible policy options, affordable rates, and opportunities to save on coverage. But it may not be a good fit for all pet owners, especially those looking to enroll pets that are over 14 years old.
Embrace offers both accident-and-illness and accident-only coverage. If your pet is 15 years or older, it will only be eligible for an accident-only plan from Embrace.
While accident-and-illness offers the most comprehensive coverage, it also has the highest premiums. On the other hand, an accident-only plan is more cost-effective but does not cover illnesses-related expenses.
Regarding waiting periods, or the set time frame before your coverage officially begins, Embrace has a 14-day waiting period for illnesses, a two-day waiting period for accidents, and a six-month waiting period for orthopedic treatment for dogs.
Embrace’s accident-and-illness policies have deductibles ranging from $100 to $1,000, and reimbursement rates up to 90%. Annual coverage limit options range from $5,000 to unlimited. Pet owners also have the option to add coverage for exam fees and prescription medications for an extra monthly fee.
Accident-and-illness plans cover a range of illnesses, injuries, and medical conditions, such as cancer, chronic conditions, congenital conditions, dental trauma, and more. It helps to pay for treatments and procedures, including diagnostic testing (MRIs, ultrasounds), lab work, surgery, hospitalization, emergency care, and physical therapy.
The company’s accident-only plan has a $100 deductible, a 90% reimbursement rate, and a $5,000 annual coverage limit. This coverage is much more basic, excluding any illnesses and medical conditions. However, it will cover accidental injuries, including cuts, lacerations, ingestion of foreign bodies, and other medical issues related to accidents.
Embrace’s wellness plans can help to cover your pet’s routine care expenses, such as vaccines, wellness exams, grooming, chiropractic care, spaying or neutering, microchipping, and teeth cleaning. These wellness plans have no deductibles and are available as an add-on to a standard Embrace pet insurance policy.
Three tiers of coverage are available: $250, $450, or $650 per year, and reimburse 100% for routine care expenses up to your selected coverage amount. There is no waiting period to use your wellness benefits.
Like most pet insurers, Embrace Pet Insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. If your pet had an injury, illness, or abnormality that you or your vet noticed before your policy started, that’s a pre-existing condition, even if your pet didn’t see the vet for the issue.
However, Embrace will distinguish between a curable pre-existing condition (vomiting or diarrhea) versus incurable (diabetes or allergies). Embrace may cover a curable pre-existing condition once it’s resolved. For example, if your dog has an ear infection before your policy takes effect, pet insurance won’t cover it after your policy takes effect. But if your dog’s ear infection heals and your dog is symptom-free for 12 months, Embrace will reevaluate and may reinstate coverage for an ear infection in the future.
Certain pre-existing conditions are considered incurable, and if your dog is diagnosed, won’t be covered:
Additionally, Embrace Pet Insurance never covers certain conditions or procedures:
Embrace has some of the cheapest sample rates among companies in our rating: $29.71 per month for a dog, and $12.22 per month for a cat.
Embrace charges a $25 enrollment fee. But it also offers discounts that could help lower your costs, including a 10% discount for insuring multiple pets, a 5% military discount (not available in New York or Tennessee), and a 10% discount for animal care workers.

Pets Best is No. 1 in our rating, and Embrace is tied at No. 2. Pets Best and Embrace offer similar coverages. Both include things like hospitalizations, surgeries, emergency services, and breed-specific conditions in a basic medical plan. Both also offer optional wellness coverage. But Embrace’s basic coverages include vet exam fees, and Pets Best offers this as an optional coverage.
Pets Best has cheaper monthly sample rates than Embrace, particularly for dogs. And unlike Embrace, Pets Best doesn’t have upper-age limits for enrollment. Pets over 14 can’t enroll in Embrace’s accident-and-illness plan.

Embrace and Spot are tied at No. 2 in our rating. Both sell policies for cats and dogs that cover accidents only, and policies that cover accidents and illnesses. Both offer optional wellness coverage.
One difference here is cost: Embrace offers multiple opportunities to save via discounts and the Healthy Pet Deductible program. Spot offers fewer savings, though it does have a discount for insuring multiple pets.
Embrace is one of the cheapest pet insurers in our rating, on average, and Spot’s sample rates are closer to the middle of the pack.

Multiple discount opportunities available
Cons:
When enrolling a pet over age 14, an accident-only policy is the only option
* Dogs and cats age 14 and younger are eligible for full accident and illness coverage. Pets 15 years old and older are eligible for an accident-only policy.
You can fill out basic information about your pet on Embrace's website to request a quote. You'll also need to give Embrace permission to obtain a year's worth of medical records from your vet. If your pet is less than a year old or was adopted within the past year, you will need to provide records dating back to when they joined your household.
You'll be able to adjust your annual maximum, annual deductible, and reimbursement percentage to manage your premium. Keep in mind that pets 15 years and older are only eligible for accident coverage.
You can also decide if you want the optional Wellness Rewards plan that reimburses you for wellness visits and preventative treatments that fall outside of a traditional pet insurance policy.
Embrace plans have a 14-day waiting period for illness and a 48-hour period for accidents. Waiting periods prevent you from signing up for pet insurance and immediately filing a claim for an accident or illness. You can't file claims for situations that arise during those periods. Dogs have a six-month period for orthopedic treatment, though you can reduce it to 14 days by getting an orthopedic exam.

Embrace Pet Insurance offers a plan called Wellness Rewards on top of its standard plan, but this is not an insurance policy. This allows you to pay over the course of the year for a fixed amount of wellness treatments including wellness vet visits, spaying and neutering, and grooming. You can choose between three levels of coverage: $250, $450, or $650 per year.
No, Embrace does not cover exotic pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, parrots, or snakes. Its plans are only designed for dogs and cats.
In general, Embrace doesn’t cover preexisting conditions. However, it may cover curable preexisting conditions that have been symptom-free and treatment-free for at least 12 months.
Embrace does not offer spaying/neutering as part of its insurance plan. However, customers can purchase the company’s additional non-insurance program, Wellness Rewards. Embrace calls this additional program a tool that can help with budgeting. The money put into this plan can be used for spaying/neutering, among other things.
Preventative teeth cleaning is not included in Embrace’s insurance plan. But, like spaying/neutering, customers who have the Wellness Rewards plan can use that money for dental cleanings.
You can contact Embrace customer service by phone during extended business hours Monday through Friday. You can also use the MyEmbrace website or the Embrace smartphone app to update your coverage and submit claims. The company can also be reached by email, fax, or postal mail.
Embrace Pet Insurance plans generally have an annual maximum selected when you sign up. There is no lifetime max on Embrace plans. Dental coverage works separately, with dental illness generally covered up to $1,000 per month under Embrace's plans.
The Wellness plan is a separate offering with its own annual limits.
Embrace pet insurance does have an annual deductible. You will select the deductible when you sign up for coverage. Insurance only begins to cover expenses after you’ve paid the deductible for that year. If you pay a higher deductible, you'll generally have lower premiums as part of your plan.
You can submit a claim online or through the MyEmbrace app. You can also send it by email, fax, or postal mail. You'll need to include a complete invoice from your veterinarian's office and make sure to include all pages with your claims. You'll also need any diagnosis your pet received.
After you submit the online or physical claim form, it will typically take 10 to 15 business days to process. Your first claim may take longer. You'll get reimbursed by direct deposit within about three days or by check within about 10 business days if you prefer. You can track your claim online.
You can cancel your Embrace pet insurance plan by email or phone. If you cancel within 30 days of when your policy started and haven't submitted any claims yet, you'll get a full refund. Otherwise, you might get a prorated refund of your premium for the current billing cycle.
Keep in mind that if you cancel you'll have a new waiting period if you sign up again, and any conditions your pet has been treated for may be considered a preexisting condition.
