How do I file an application?

The application for a new passport has to be made in person. Verification of identity, fingerprinting and a signature in front of the government authority are mandatory. At the time of application, children, including newborns, have to be present personally for verification of identity.

Processing time of your application, once all necessary documents have been received, is currently six to eight weeks.

Austrian citizens who reside abroad may also apply for a new passport at the competent authority (at the magistrate or district commission) while in Austria

 

Please make an appointment for your application (use the adjoining link)! We ask for your understanding that applications without prior appointment will not be accepted.

If you are planning to file your application at the Honorary Consulate in Atlanta, Tampa or St. Louis please follow the instructions in the adjoining leaflets.

Austrian citizens who reside abroad may also apply for a new passport at the competent authority (at the magistrate or district commission) while in Austria.

The following documents (original and one copy) must be presented:

  • Application form
  • Affidavit for adults
  • Current passport (or a police report in case of a lost or stolen passport)
  • 2 passport photos, not older than 6 months. Important – please mind the adjoining photo criteria; US format accepted, please do not cut the pictures, good picture quality, neutral facial expression (mouth closed).
  • Permanent Resident Card (“Green Card”) or valid U.S. visa
  • Proof of residence (e.g. driver’s license with current address, a lease, utilities bill, etc.)
  • Birth certificate (“long form” in case of a U.S. birth certificate with apostille; for birth certificates from other nations, please consult the adjoining leaflet “Certification of Documents;” in addition also provide the “Certificate of Birth Abroad” if applicable.
  • Certificate of Citizenship • If applicable: Notice of maintenance of Austrian citizenship and Certificate of naturalization for dual citizens.
  • Certificate(s) of marriage and/ or divorce, including previous marriages if applicable (U.S. documents with apostille, certificates of marriage or divorce from other nations; see adjoining leaflet “Certification of Documents.” Please attach a photocopy of the birth certificate and passport of your spouse
  • If applicable: proof of academic degree(s) – only if issued in an EU/EFTA-member state or Switzerland
  • Postal return envelope for your passport. Only post-paid “United States Postal service” envelopes (USPS Priority preferred) or post-paid envelops/ shipping labels from FedEx can be used. FedEx envelopes or shipping labels that only show a credit card number or “Bill Sender” cannot be accepted.

All original documents (current passport, certificate of citizenship, birth certificate, apostilles, drivers license, Green Card, etc.) have to be presented with a copy.

Important Information: Official documents in foreign language must be translated into either English or German by a certified translator.

Additional Documentation for Children under the age of 18

  • Application form for minors (only if you apply at the Consulate in Miami)
  • Affidavit
  • Passports of both parents
  • Permanent Resident cards (Green Card) or valid U.S. visa of both parents
  • Certificates of citizenship of both parents (U.S. documents require an apostille)
  • Certificate of marriage if applicable (U.S. documents require an apostille)
  • Proof of legal representation in case of divorced parents

Consular fees have to be paid cash in USD, as postal money order, or via a Cashier’s check (made out to “Austrian Embassy”).

Personal checks, as well as credit- and debit cards cannot be accepted.

For applications at Honorary Consulates only: since the administration of biometric data (finger prints) exceeds the regular services offered by a Honorary Consulate, an additional Euro 30 per passport, and Euro 15 per ID card are charged. Those fees are to be paid directly at the Honorary Consulate when making the application.
