Prima it was a great window into the decade of how everyday life was like too a degree ( gotta remember the storyline) Secunda I loved how it always touched upon issues that weren’t as cut & dried as it seemed at first, I always liked how they made Duncan an everyman character that a lot of people could relate to, I liked Amanda’s character for being his friend, lover, at times foil talk about Cat & Mouse & we cannot forget about Dawson , Chronicler, frenemy, counseler plus blues man extraordinaire last but certainly not least we have the ever elusive Metho’s, admittedly my favorite too old for his own good, a man tortured by his past, that was in part driven by survival on pain of certain death otherwise & also driven by survival of the fittest,, plain and simple. He both respected Macleod , feared him and at times thought of him as an annoying pest, as he said “it was a different time Macleod”you cannot judge someone for how they lived and the actions they took if you weren’t even alive back then, I love how he called out Macleod’s ignorance and in the end gained an even closer friend.
HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES is the story of Duncan Macleod (Adrian Paul), a 400 year-old immortal who, like his cousin Connor from the feature films, hails from the Highlands of Scotland. Duncan is an aggressively moral warrior who lives with a mortal lady love, Tessa Noel (Alexandra Vandernoot), and mentors a reformed street punk named Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch), dividing his time between Vancouver and Paris. Due to his rigid morals and frankly, his ability to hold grudges for very, very long periods of time, Duncan often finds himself engaged in a-deux battles to the death with a whole slew of fellow immortals, some quite evil, others more morally ambiguous, and some who are equally good but on the opposite side of a disagreement. He also tangles repeatedly with mortal bad guys of the usual sort -- gangsters, psychos, spies, ad hoc genus, who get in his way. Being immortal, he struggles often with the heartbreak of losing mortal friends and lovers to old age, and as he cannot have children (immortals are barren), with loneliness and the knowledge that he can be forced to duel to the death at any moment. Duncan's long life has taken him all over the world, and most of the stories are half contemporary, half period-piece flashback to other times and other places. Immortals, being so, do not concieve of the passage of time the way we do and forget nothing, which leads to both bloodshed and in some cases, very long friendships indeed.
Over the course of the series, Duncan meets various other people who he shares uneasy but fertile relationships, including the oldest known immortal, the morally ambiguous Methos (Peter Wingfield); a member of a secret society called the Watchers named Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes); and a sexy immortal thief named Amanda (Liz Gracen) who is Duncan's former, and sometimes current, lover. But being Duncan's friend is not easy. He has a very strong sense of right and wrong and if you violate it, he may just take your head, friend or no. It makes the character infuriating at times, but also very interesting -- and consistent. Adrian Paul is one of those actors who is so handsome you suspect he was cast for his looks or possibly his athleticism (he handles the sword with a dexterity that becomes increasingly awe-inspiring over time), but he also develops quite impressively as an actor as time goes by. He's charming and witty when he wants to be, but is capable of a terrifying ruthlessness if the script demands it. Peter Wingfield is a scene-stealer, Liz Gracen never disappoints, and Jim Byrnes is worth having around just for his wonderful voice.
The universe of HIGHLANDER has some interesting rules and conceits. Some of them are:
* Immortals are all "foundlings" and none of them know who their real parents are, or even if they have parents. They grow up as orphans or adoptees, without knowing how they came to be. They are pre-immortal (meaning they age and can die naturally) unless they die an unnatural i.e. violent death, which activates their immortality and freezes them eternally in appearance at the age at which they died.
* Immortals must keep their immortality secret from mortals by changing identity every few decades and moving to new parts of the world.
* Immortals can sense the presence of other immortals.
* Beheading an immortal gives the victorious one a "quickening" -- an absorption of his victim's power.
* Immortals must fight each other one-on-one (no "gang ups" are supposed to take place) and with swords only (guns are also forbidden, though some lowlifes cheat).
* Immortals are not allowed to fight on holy ground, and can take refuge there.
* Immortals live according to a concept known as The Game. If you are "in the game," you fight to become the last living immortal and thus take "the prize," an undefined but presumably great reward. This leads to the saying, "There can be only one" and makes all of their friendships tenuous indeed. If however, you are "out of the game," and choose not to fight, you must basically live on holy ground, as otherwise you are a fair target.
HIGHLANDER ran for six seasons, and after the usual shaky start one would expect from a series spun off from a feature film, it rapidly matured and delivered some truly excellent episodes and storylines, along with many memorable characters, including Hugh Fitzcairn (Roger Daltrey -- yes, THAT Roger Daltrey of The Who), Duncan's exasperating immortal drinking buddy, and the truly evil immortal Xavier St. Cloud (Roland Gift -- yes, THAT Roland Gift of Fine Young Cannibals). Guest stars included many actors who went on to fame of their own, such as Tony Head (Buffy), Alexis Denisoff (Angel), Geraint Wyn-Davies (Forever Knight), as well as already-established actors like David Robb, John Banks, Jason Isaacs, Richard Moll, Richard Lynch, and many others -- too many to name by half. There were also "celebrity" guests like Joan Jett, Martin Kemp, Sheena Easton, Vanity and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Obviously a show like this is action-first, but as I said above, the series did explore some fairly heavy themes and ideas over the course of its life, including the psychological and spiritual effect of immortality, the variable nature of morality, and the role of an immortal in mortal life. I can't possibly list all the good episodes, there are too many to name, but I would say that if you watch the second season episode "Pharoah's Daughter," you will see the series at or near its very best. The story has everything -- a gorgeous female guest star, a good plot, some interesting twists, an abiding philosophical question or two, and an ending you probably will never suspect.
HIGHLANDER has its share of problems, especially during its truncated final season, which is a confusing muddle and led to a (sadly) unsuccessful spin-off show with Liz Gracen called THE RAVEN, and there are times it is cheesy, underbudgeted, poorly plotted or frustrating to watch. The internal logic of the series does not always hold, and Duncan's judgmental attitude can be tiresome at times, as can Richie's penchant for doing the dumbest possible thing in every situation, but taken all in all, it is a hugely enjoyable and fun series that combines historical costume-drama with modern-day action, tragedy with comedy, and great sword-fights with some really deep questions about the nature of immortality. You may as well buy the entire series, because while in the end, there can be only one, you will definitely end up watching 'em all.
