What travelers are saying
- JRAsFishBabeCalgary, Canada1,915 contributionsEnroute to Alicante, we had a chance to add another World Heritage site to the list. The town of Elche was, but a short detour off our route. Elche is known as "the World Capital of Palm Trees. There are over 200,000 Palm Trees in this city, distributed in various orchards spread throughout the city. Originating from transplants of the Middle East and Africa, dating back to prehistoric times, it wasn't until the 10th century, under the Muslims, that it reached its greatest splendour. Known as the Historic Palm Trees, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. based on Arabic agricultural practises which included an elaborate irrigation system which is still in use.
There are a number of areas which compose the site, Municipal Park, the Huerto del Curta garden, El Palmeral Museum, the Route of El Palmeral and the Filet de Flora palm park. We were here too short a time. So, if you have more than a "passing" interest, do your research and allow yourself more time.
We just managed to see the actual grove, where we had trouble finding parking. It is still, quite a spectacular site.Written March 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We visited for dinner and although it is now much larger restaurant all was as good.
A nice touch is when the owner/chef comes to your table at the end of the meal and has a general conversationWritten June 16, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dean THalifax, UK21 contributionsPark was run quite run down and looked neglected in parts. Hardly any staff anywhere. As soon as you enter you are grabbed by a person taking photo's.
Also the food was very basic - when we were there there was only chicken and chips or hotdogs.Written October 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A very pleasant and interesting park to walk around. We didn't have nearly enough time to explore it properly and were really only using it as a cut through from A to B. I wish we had had longer. Interesting pools, towers and trees, very photogenic. As it was free was better than the palm garden as more varied.
Good play area.Written November 17, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Very interesting information about the history of the museum and the exhibition. Also, the idea of this museum is a great one. 50 years ago it started as a way to collect and preserve memories from the village, with the help of school students and now these memories are used to teach kids who, in return, are teaching their parents and the visitors.
There are many interesting exhibits recreating the atmosphere of a not so far history. It is a real hidden gem.Written November 30, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's smaller than most, but it has some very large exhibits, as one might expect and provides a good couple of hours' inspection for the enthusiast. The introductory video can be played in English and sets the scene perfectly for what you are about to see in the rest of the exhibition. Admittedly, not every single item is documented in English, but the non-Spanish speaker would only need a small degree of imagination to identify certain objects! There were no children in our group, but we could appreciate how much the size charts and the opportunities for tactile experiences would appeal to them. Staff were efficient and friendly and the entrance fee of 2 Euros, or even 1 Euro for concessions, was more than reasonable! It could be a little difficult to find, since it's not really at Calle Sant Joan 3, from a GPS point of view, but tucked in the Plaza Sant Joan, off the main road and almost looks like a shop front. Even so, well worth a visit, for all age groups.Written June 26, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- jeffmmanilaBerlin, Germany88 contributionsNicely laid out garden but in need of TLC because of quarentine. Good for about 1 to 2 hours. Free admission.
