My husband, daughter (19), and I visited El Silencio on a last minute visit to Costa Rica. We didn’t have much time to plan but were drawn to the location, reviews, and amenities of El Silencio.

Bottom line: We loved it. It exceeded our expectations.

Why?
The staff was super friendly and willing to go above and beyond for any request. We walked into breakfast the first morning and they greeted us by name. On our last evening, sommelier Juan had pre-chilled a bottle of wine he thought we’d enjoy.

The location is off the beaten track in Baias Del Toros which is slowly starting to get developed but El Silencio’s property is extensive with hiking trails, three on-property waterfalls, a hummingbird garden, lots of places to sit and watch the mist float over the mountains, and an adventure park offering repelling and zip lining. The area is mystical - and only 90 mins from San Jose (but it’s a tricky drive…so we recommend driving during daylight or having El Silencio arrange transit for you. We did the latter and it was stress-free).

The activities were endless and what we loved most was the personalized service. All our activities were just our own family with an engaged guide. We enjoyed the time with Kenneth, Jose, and Juan Carlos on hiking, archery, adventure park and mountain biking. (And this isn’t all the activities they offer)

The spa was next level. I’ve been to many spas around the world and this was by far the best experience I’ve had with a Deep Wellness and Facial service. It was flawless execution in a stunning facility.

The accommodations were next level. The cleanliness of the rooms and the porch and the hot tub did not go unnoticed. We remarked several times how difficult it would be to keep the rooms so clean in the middle of a damp forest. Our villa slept us comfortably and we enjoyed the private outdoor jacuzzi several times.

And finally, the dining was fabulous. The staff was consistent and were always welcoming at each meal. The quality of the food was excellent and tremendous mix of flavours and textures.

We definitely lucked out on this hastily planned trip and are so grateful for the excellent service and high quality that El Silencio offers. In 4 short days, we felt we had an authentic Costa Rica experience.

EL Silencio Lodge is a special place. The hotel is situated within a beautiful cloud forest surrounded by rolling hills and mountains. The hotel has 3 stunning waterfalls that only guests can access.

The rooms are spacious and well equipped with Sky TV, WiFi and a full mini bar. We found our room got a little chilly (especially in the bathroom), you definitely should pack a jumper or coat if staying here. You also have your own private hot tub which is a great addition.

The eco concierges are passionate and have so much knowledge of the local area and wildlife of Costa Rica, I am envious they get to spend everyday in such a wonderful place.

There are also nice little touches such as free hot chocolate and cookies each day aswell as fresh juice left outside your room each morning.

Breakfast is included and is good, if something is not on show they can usually make it at your request for free. Lunch and dinner is good however pricey, and unfortunately there is nothing nearby within walking distance so you'll find most if not, all of your meals will be at the hotel.

There are numerous activities the hotel offers however in my opinion they are expensive for what they are. I did the coffee tasting which was $40pp to try the same coffee but brewed using different methods. I also did the cooking class, so essentially paid $70 ($35pp) for my partner and I to cook our own dinner. That being said, both were highly enjoyable and I would recommend.

This is an expensive hotel but it really is an amazing experience and one I would not hesitate to visit again. If you want to experience a unique luxury holiday you should definitely consider this place.

As a tip: the del Toro waterfall can be done without a guide (we had the hotel drop us off and pick us up at the entrance for $20) which saved us a lot of money.

The lodge is about 3 hours away from San Jose through the mountains. The roads are safe but very twisty, stunning scenery on the way. Upon arrival we were greeted with towels (partially dry) and hand sanitizer (a nice touch due to coronavirus).

Although El Silencio is beautiful, I found the initial impressions not as welcoming as I would have expected as the woman who greeted us and explained everything was not that friendly, I could say COLD. However the rest of the staff I encountered were lovely

The lodge has about 20 villas (cottages) spread out on the property, so much so that it appears empty even when full. Villas are stunning!!! Ours was a two bedroom unit with a hot tub overlooking a Rushing stream.

Activities include hiking, horseback riding and cooking lessons etc. Many of the activities are not included in your room fee so need to be added on (25-100 US/person plus tip). All of the activities that we participated in have knowledgeable and fun/patient guides.

They have a number of hiking trails onsite and you are free to wander the property. Beautiful waterfall hike as well as a lookout hike too!

Because El Silencio is remote, you have really no great options for meals other than the Lodge. Bear this in mind if you are planning on staying a few days, especially if you are a vegetarian, as they do have some options, but it will quickly becomes repetitive. Even meat eaters, can find the menu a little underwhelming after 2 days.

Ticks most of my boxes. A small hotel with rooms in individual buildings across the site. Ours was a short walk to reception (where the bar and restaurant are also situated), but golf buggies are available for more distant rooms or disabled. The grounds are well kept, and lead through well maintained trails into the cloud forest. Nearer to the hotel is a beautiful hummingbird garden (tip; sit on a bench and wait, and hummingbirds will appear) and more local trails. Good range of activities. We did rappelling and zip lines, which we thoroughly enjoyed, a walk up to the waterfalls, and a cooking class. All well staffed by knowledgeable staff. The cooking class probably cost about the same as lunch, and have us the use of the private dining area by the river, so extra value.
Only downside is that it is quite expensive. Realistically, with a 30 minute drive to the nearest alternative restaurant, you will eat at the hotel. The food is good, but not remarkable. Breakfast very good, with a range of Costa Rican options every day.
A very enjoyable stay.

I spent an excellent long weekend at El Silencio, which is a lovely resort in which to retreat and recharge. I travel a lot, and I'm not sure I remember staying anyplace where the staff were so uniformly friendly, warm, and accommodating. The staff were very careful about Covid protocols, too, wearing masks both inside and outside the buildings (the other guests were similarly compliant with mask rules, which helped make me feel safe). The food is excellent (the chef has a Michelin star), and they were very solicitous regarding food allergies (my friend has celiac, and they were very careful to modify dishes to make them safe for her). The grounds are extensive enough that you never have to leave them: you can do a moderately challenging hike to multiple waterfalls, go horseback riding or ziplining, and visit a peaceful hummingbird garden all on the resort property. The accommodations are spotlessly clean and attractive, with cabins spaced far enough apart that you never hear your neighbors.

If there is one demerit to mention, it's that the wifi was maddening. After the first day, the wifi stopped working in my suite, and even promises from the staff to reboot or fix the router didn't yield any results. I absolutely didn't come on vacation to stare at my phone, but since cell service was very spotty as well, folks at home had no way to get a hold of me in an emergency - my texts and emails would only load when I was at the main building for meals. Ultimately, it was more an annoyance than a tragedy, but just be aware this would NOT be a great venue for working remotely.

Also, I wanted to flag that the resort exists in a kind of microclimate - if you try to Google the weather for Bajos del Toro or other towns nearby, the forecast will be completely different than at the resort itself, which was generally cooler/greyer than the surrounding area. I was there in dry season, and the vibe was very Pacific Northwest - beautiful, with no rain, but cloudy and very chilly at night. So bring a jacket! (Note that the weather also means there were no mosquitoes at the resort, which is a relief not to have to worry about.)

Overall, I would recommend this resort for anyone who wants to spend a peaceful, quietly luxurious few days in the Central Valley.

We stayed at El Silencio for 3 nights at the end of December/early Jan 2021 and it was amazing. Our villa was impeccable, so spacious with amazing amenities -- two jacuzzis, rainfall showerheads, heated floors. It was perfect.

We mostly stayed on the property as there was plenty for us to do right there. We did the Hidden Treasure waterfall hike (such a good hike, we loved it), got massages in the spa (amazing), and did a coffee tasting experience (so interesting).

All of our meals were delicious as well, and every staff member was so friendly. Everything seemed very clean, everyone wore masks and there was hand sanitizer regularly handed out/accessible throughout the property.

I would like to write a great review since the location was beautiful and the people were nice. Unfortunately we had some issues that you would not expect when paying top dollar for a hotel. On the positive side, We took a nice guided hike on the property and fished for trout in the hotel pond. we had a lovely bungalow with a private terrace (#6). Unfortunately when we arrived after a long journey, there was no hot water in the shower and the hot tub was unusable because it was scalding hot. The next day maintenance came, but we were not able to get any more than a lukewarm shower. Regarding the hot tub, I was told that a thermostat makes it impossible for the tub to become scalding (not true.). Then it was explained to me that if the tub gets too hot I could add cold water using the spigot. Also worthy of note are some high prices for extras. The hotel offers a wine tasting, and the fee is 55.35 USD per person. Yoga is available at extra cost. There are more examples, like the refillable water bottle in the room that costs $15.00. Overall it is a lovely place but I cannot recommend it.

Hello Ms. Kairey: Thank you for staying at El Silencio Lodge and Spa. We are in the process of upgrading all our hot water tanks and clearly we did not get to your room before your stay. Our jacuzzis can be hot but because of the abundance of rain being in the rain/cloud forest (where it can be cold), we advise guests to add water from the jacuzzi faucet to reach the desired temperature. We do have an instruction sheet by the jacuzzi but it should have been larger and more noticeable. We are glad you otherwise enjoyed the resort and will make sure your next visit will be a five-star experience. Kind regards, John

We spent 3 nights in El Silencio and loved it.

The location is unique in the cloud forest, beautiful suites with private outside jacuzzi and the most beautiful views. We simply loved it.

3 beautiful waterfalls in their site, wonderful spa (ask for Paola…the best), beautiful hikes but just seating in the terrace of your suite in the typical rocking chairs is a pleasure. Very private, beautiful room, great bed…really lovely!

There is a different menu for lunch and dinner so plenty of choices. We were not specially taken by their desserts ( but this is so personal). Very good breakfast ( loved their green juice and granola).

The food is great but what makes it special is that they grow most of their vegetables, and you can taste the difference. I specially loved the heart of palm salad.

We took the hike to the 3 waterfalls by ourselves and its really worth it, beautiful. Did the mistic trail with Ana, she made it special with her remarks and making us feel nature. We also did the bird watching activity ( usd 35 per person) which is a real waste. We hardly walked 50 mts in the main road of the property and saw very few birds, not worth it. Just bring you binoculars and walk around or simply stay in your terrace looking.

We were hoping to get the cooking classes but they were not available.

The only thing that was annoying was that we were asked at what time we wanted to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. I can imagine it is because covid restrictions but it got ridiculed…I even told the nice lady who was asking us all the time that I felt like a boarding school, we are on holidays and the last thing we wanted was that kind of pressure. We said 7 pm for dinner and were told either 6,45 or 8,45… ridiculous! This is not an all inclusive hotel, we could be able to show whenever we wanted and waited if needed, but that scheduling stressed us out. How can we know at what time will we have breakfast the following day ? Or lunch or dinner ?. I really didn’t like that.

For the rest of our stay… perfect. I cant name anybody specially for good service because all of the are very good, wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t mention someone.

I will be back…relaxing and perfect holiday

We have noted your observations and hope to address your concerns to the fullest extent possible. Our regrets for not being able to offer a cooking class during your stay. It really is a wonderful experience! We will certainly make sure it is available when you return to enjoy another perfect holiday in Costa Rica. Social distancing measures have posed a unique hospitality challenge but we are heartened to know that they are in place to protect our guests and staff. El Silencio was the first stop of our 12 day honeymoon tour of Costa Rica, and in hindsight we'd add more time here.

Our bungalow was a delight - we enjoyed nights in front of the fire place and quiet mornings watching the hummingbirds from our porch rockers, but I think we spent most of our down time in the incredible private jacuzzi/pool. The robes and slippers were also the nicest of the three resorts we stayed at. The bed was nice, pillows soft, and linens fresh and lightly scented. We were there during shoulder season so there was a mix of wet and dry weather, but the temps were great and we regularly left the doors open without being bothered by bugs. Truly a delight.

The setting was tranquil, and definitely what you make of it. We were coming down from the stress of the wedding so didn't partake in the archery, ziplining, or early morning nature or birding hikes, but we LOVED being able to wander the extensive grounds and trails at our leisure. We checked out the hummingbird garden, orchid and overlook trail, and wandered around their mystic and trout pond trails. The best of all, though, was our sunset hike on the waterfalls trail. This trail takes you to three waterfalls, each one more stunning than the last. The final waterfall, La Promesa, lands in a shallow pool you can walk right into. It's an incredible experience.

We also highly recommend the ox-cart painting class and romantic dinner. The painting class is led by Kenneth, a sweet and enthusiastic guy who's full of knowledge and passion for the local culture and environment. He was also able to adapt to the vastly different painting skills of me and my hubby, and even went so far as to get more colors and examples for me to get inspiration from, then showed me the techniques for achieving the look I wanted. We had a great time and learned a lot about the area. The romantic dinner is held in its own little building right on the river, and comes with a dedicated waitstaff. We loved it, and even did a little dancing in front of the fireplace between dinner and dessert.

Finally, we can't forget to give an extra special shout out to the staff! Daniel, Mario, Kenneth, Yolanda, and Alejandro were all so sweet and enthusiastic about sharing the conservation and cultural preservation they were participating in. We loved talking with them and getting to know more about the location, the resort, and their guiding beliefs.

Due to Covid, I suspect occupancy rates were reduced to maybe, 25%. They were diligent on the masks, hand sanitizer and taking temperatures.

The entire El Silencio staff made an effort to express their enthusiasm for our visit and love of their country in the same way grandparents gush over grandchildren. We went on a El Silencio birding tour with an in house tour guide, leaving at 6 am. It was great as we managed to get 19 species identified. The other El Silencio tour was the combo Zip Line and Rappelling. The zip line course was 5 lines, one almost a quarter of a mile long, all soaring high through the tropical forest. The rappelling was down the face of a 35 meter high waterfall - over 100 feet!

The El Silencio is a beautiful hotel, but were operating a bit light-handed and it showed in places. Our first night they’d heated our spa water so hot it was impossible to dip any part of our bodies into it without getting scalded. Perhaps we should have suspected this as when we were shown the room and spa on arrival the person mentioned they turned the spa on a few hours ahead of time as “Americans like more Fahrenheits.” The young staff were always accommodating and on the zip line and rappelling, super safety conscious and encouraging. We felt totally secure. The bird guide had his degree in cultural anthropology and studied birds and other wildlife. The resort is flexible in helping people do what they wanted to do. Unlike cruises where if you don’t sign up days in advance you miss out on all the good things. Also, the resorts seemed to be well-connected and had vetted the best guides.

Hi Tanya! We look forward to your arrival! To fully enjoy both destinations, we recommend a paused pace that doesn't entail driving all over the place. Monteverde and Bajos del Toro both offer stunning cloud forest settings and impressive nature. Perhaps you could leave some locations for your next trip? If your heart is really set on including a stopover at MV you can certainly do it. But it may sacrifice quality time at the other destinations. Hope this is helpful!

Hi Debbie! Our secluded location is the perfect spot to fully enjoy Costa Rica's intense natural wonders. It also means that we are distant from crowded restaurant hubs. That said, we have carefully crafted a culinary experience that is as varied as superb. Under Chef Quentin Villers' masterful guide, we offer a selection of dishes that highlight the very best of local ingredients. You will find options that start at about $15, with premium options at around $45. Please do write to us and we will gladly send you our menu in advance. We are certain that dining at El Silencio Lodge & Spa will become one of your most cherished memories of Costa Rica. Warmest regards!
