Actors from the cast who never achieved stardom (but maybe should have) -?

Obviously BoB is famously chock full of actors who later went on to make big waves later in their career, but who were you surprised never made more of an impact, given how good they were on the show?

Liebgott and Spiers were all played really well, the guys had star quality and I was surprised how little I saw the actors on the screen after the show.

And Doc Roe (despite some debate about the accent) absolutely killed it. On a recent rewatch that episode really stood out amongst the rest- my favourite one of the bunch this time round. Brilliant TV and a terrific less-is-more performance. Really surprised Shane Taylor's career didn't take off.

I know some people don't seek out stardom or just never have the right breaks, but who do you think should have gone on to great things but didn't?

Yeah, I'm shocked that Speirs actor wasn't type cast as a tension making menacing guy with uncertain allegiances in action thrillers

It's always frustrating when an actor is typecast...

...but he does unreadable-possible-psycho so damn well!

Instead he (Matthew Settle) went on to fame in…Gossip Girl

He had a recurring role in season 8 of ER where he played Maura Tierney's neighbor.

I was watching ER clips a few years ago and was surprised when he showed up. Even more surprised after what happens to him.

He also starred in “Into the West” miniseries about the westward expansion and conflict with native Americans. Think it was before BoB though.

It was after, in 2005. And wow, what a stacked cast

Weirdly Buck's actor has turned into a typecast Villain to a degree

u/903153ugo avatar

He’s also an Uber-Catholic who refuses to do certain things on camera

Which he played quite well in Justified.

I’ve always felt Michael Cudlitz hasn’t gotten his proper due. Great on TWD, and he has had some other roles I thought he was great for. Yet wasn’t the focus.

Southland should have been bigger

u/degaknights avatar

I’m still mad that show got cut. I turned it on in the background last week and that turned into a full rewatch.

u/Vye13 avatar

I will never NOT be upset at what happened to SouthLAnd. Probably my favorite tv show of all time and it was cut so unceremoniously.

What streaming service is it on?

u/degaknights avatar

Tubi

God that show was so good. And he was incredible in it.

He'll always be Bob from Grosse Point Blank for me.

I’m literally queuing that movie up this morning to watch while I catch up on emails

Just the perfect film. Aside from sketching, I'm not usually a fan of doing stuff while a film is on in the background, but the dialog is so great it could almost be an audio book.

Except for that fight scene. I bloody love that fight scene.

He did have a starring role in that sitcom The Kids Are Alright, but it was cancelled after a year or two. Side note — Michael Cudlitz is an incredibly nice guy.

u/Bmorganxcite avatar

Came here to say this, I loved that show, sucked it was cancelled

Do you think Cooper is dead?

u/ChefTD1 avatar

I didn’t get big into Southland but I can tell you that I saw an interview with Cudlitz says Cooper didn’t die and the new season (that never aired) was supposed to start with him in the hospital So no.

You have no idea how much that means to me

I thought Matthew Settle and Ross McCall have had pretty strong careers. Shane Taylor (Doc Roe) definitely was one I thought would have done more since then.

Fair enough. They passed me by, but yeah, looking them up they seem to have kept busy. I just expected a few bigger movie roles- can't all be Fassbenders, Hardys, MacAvoys etc I guess.

Eion Bailey has been Ina lot of stuff but has has never achieved being a household name.

He auditioned for Nolans batman, but it was less than stellar XD. it's on YouTube. But I agree he deserves more recognition.

u/LiterallyJohnLennon avatar

Damn I just checked it out, that’s very interesting.

People clown on Bale’s “bat voice” and I will admit there were times in Dark Knight Rises that it got close to corny, but Bale had the best take on Batman. It’s obvious why he got the job. Bailey and Murphy were doing the standard Batman that we’ve seen a million times. What made Bale great is the voice. If Batman/Bruce Wayne really existed, they’d need to disguise their voice, yet no actor had really done that yet. It showed the casting directors (and Nolan) that he had really thought about the role and given it his own spin. It gave the role an added level of realism that made it more interesting.

It also doesn't hurt that Bake is one of the best actors of his generation.

I liked him in Fight Club but that was pre BOB.

Holy shit, I didn't realise that was him! Ha! The 'Paint a self portrait' guy!

Settle did do 121 episodes of Gossip Girl....

And four on screen appearances in ER. I was wrong, I got angry! SHE TOOK AWAY MY WIFE!

He was on Law & Order SVU as well. I liked his character, and they seemed to leave it open for him to return as a possible love interest for Olivia. He played a journalist who went to jail to protect his confidential source (Olivia) on a case. It was only one episode, but it was a good one, and he had great chemistry with Mariska Hargitay.

Unpopular opinion. I think the actors nailed their roles because they were cast perfectly and were not asked to go beyond their range as an actor.  Good directors know how to use what they got. I’m  not convinced they were leading men and that’s ok. Not everyone can be.

Nolan Hemmings and Scott McCall. Scott McCall is grat for portraying the type of characters like Liebgott, while Hemmings would be better for portraying evel headed commander.

u/charliemike avatar

Ross McCall has worked a TON though and while he isn’t a star he has absolutely had a great career so far from that role.

u/LiterallyJohnLennon avatar

He was great in the BBC show Luther. He plays an American jewel thief and he brings a menacing demeanor to the role.

u/charliemike avatar

He was also a nemesis of Matt Bomer’s character in White Collar. And he crushed it.

u/LiterallyJohnLennon avatar

Is that worth watching?

I liked him in Crash!

Ross McCall had a pretty good run in mid 2000s didn’t he? Maybe just not as well known in US. And was engaged to Jennifer Love Hewitt so he had that going for him!

I liked the guy who played Christensen, his performances were magnetic.

u/Spiritual-Relief4382 avatar

Oddly enough I rewatched the series last week, and I ended up with about 5 or 6 separate tabs on IMDb on my phone looking at what certain actors had done since, and I was a little disappointed, more-so the actor themselves. Like mentioned above, Spiers, Liebgott & Doc Roe mainly (although I recognised Shane Taylor in the series Strike Back). Babe Heffron was one of my favourites, surprised he didn’t end up in some bigger roles!

Once you reach the professional level, everyone is a "good actor." It then becomes about who you know, who your representation is, your reputation, your work ethic, whether your look is in or not, and some other really seedy stuff. Some people also get busy with other aspects of their life and can't devote 98% of it to acting like you need to do if you want to be a star. Not everyone wants to be Brad Pitt.

Yeah, I pretty much alluded to that in my original post. Not everyone gets the breaks and/or isn't obsessed with stardom.

Hands down Shane Taylor for me, I was mesmerised and blown away by his portrayal as Doc Roe. Even if he didn't achieve stardom, I wish he had more roles. It's incredibly hard to find some of the stuff he did! I enjoyed him in Walking with the Enemy, the one he did with Ben Kingsley!

u/I405CA avatar
Edited

If I am not mistaken, Shane Taylor decided to take an extended break from acting after BoB in order to focus on his kids. So he lost some potential momentum, which would have made it difficult for him to get back into it.

He was in a Brit indie road trip film called "Bomber". He plays the obnoxious son of a WWII RAF bomber pilot who regrets bombing the wrong German village and wishes to apologize. This is worth watching.

I was thinking about who did the best and ended on McAvoy after watching Split recently.

Amazing acting.

Several of them had roles of varying importance in Justified. I don't watch a lot of TV/movies, so I don't see them much.

u/WombatHat42 avatar

All of them. Outside of Winters and Nixon, did any of them ever reach Star status?

u/YouCanCallMeBurt avatar

Simon Pegg, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Tom Hardy. To name a few.

Scott Grimes (Malarkey) has worked a lot. I don’t know if “star” would quite apply.

Not a star, but he’s definitely had quite a successful career!

Well, Skip Muck had a GREAT start to his career, playing a rich kid in the huge summer blockbuster Ernest Goes to Camp!

He was in a short lived show called “Jericho” that I really loved. Was cancelled after a season (cliff hanger ended on a “Nuts!” call back) but fans brought it back for a half season.

Andrew Scott (Hall) is on a roll now: Ripley, All of us strangers, Fleabag. Really happy for him! I'm also a Kirk Acevedo (Toye) fan, especially his role in Fringe. He didn't get a lot of recognition, his main role was in Oz, but may still have a come back, I'd love to see.

Kirk Acevedo is great in Oz and Bob. Not seen fringe. Yeah, would love to see him in more.

And yeah, Andrew Scott is fab. Stole Sherlock from Benedryl Clovehitch. Scott is great in everything, funny him having such a blink-and-you'll miss it role in BoB (much like the fantastic Stephen Graham).

All of Us Strangers made me weep. It’s wonderful, as is he. I didn’t realize it was him as Hall until a few weeks ago! He’s fantastic.
