MSU Men’s Soccer Reveals 2022 Signing Class

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's soccer head coach Damon Rensing announced the addition of five players as part of the 2022 recruiting class.

The Spartans will welcome Tyler Crawford (Lutz, Florida), Josh Mason (South Lyon, Michigan), Kyle Schueneman (Rochester Hills, Michigan), Jake Spadafora (Northville, Michigan) and Jonathan Stout (Wyoming, Michigan) to the 2022 roster.

"We are really excited to welcome these five student-athletes to the Michigan State soccer family," "While we will most likely add a couple more to this class, this is a great start! These five young men's soccer pedigree will allow them the opportunity to impact next fall's line up. These student-athletes will fill needs in several positions, while creating depth and competition in others. Several of these players are leaders both on the field and in classroom, something we value very highly here at MSU. They also are people of very high character, which has been a benchmark for our program. We look forward to having them on campus in the fall!,"

Tyler Crawford

2022 Michigan State Soccer Signees
Tyler Crawford

Fr., F, 5-8, Lutz, Florida/Columbus Crew Academy

Prior To MSU: Plays for the Columbus Crew Academy … Attended USA Youth Team ID Center in spring of 2021 … Son of Darren and Thuy Crawford.

Coach Rensing on Crawford: "Tyler comes to us as one of the top left backs in the Midwest and country. Tyler has a cultured left foot which will not only allow us to play out of the back, but will create attacking opportunities in the final third of the field. On top of a great left foot, Tyler reads the game very well and is accountable defensively. Tyler moved from Tampa, Florida to join the Columbus Crew Academy. Living that far from home and family takes sacrifice and maturity. Those qualities will certainly help him make a quick adjustment to the college game."

Josh Mason

Josh Mason
Fr., D, 6-5, South Lyon, Michigan/South Lyon High School

Prior To MSU: Helped South Lyon earn Lakes Valley Conference regular season titles in 2019 and 2020 … Earned all-LVC honors all four years of high school … Was named all-region as a junior and a senior …  Played with the DCFC U23 team as a junior in high school, the youngest player on the team … In 2019, won regionals and finished third in the nation with the Michigan Jaguars 02 Green Team … Son of Chuck and Caroline Mason ...  His mother, Caroline, ran cross country/track & field at Buffalo.

Coach Rensing on Mason: "Josh is an athletic center back who reminds me of some of our MSU center backs of the past. He is exceptional in the air both defensively and offensively. At 6-5, he has a physical presence that you cannot teach and is very coachable. He is a three-year captain of his high school and a leader which is something we value very much here at MSU. We believe that Josh has a lot of room for growth and his upside is very high. He will continue to get good experience and coaching with the Michigan Jaguars."

Kyle Schueneman

Kyle Schueneman
Fr., F, 5-9, Shelby Township, Michigan/Eisenhower High School

Prior To MSU:  Currently plays for Vadar Academy for head coach Steve Arce … Also played for the Columbus Crew U19 and U23 squads … Played overseas in the Gothia Cup: The World Youth Cup … Plans to major in business … Son of David and Colleen Schueneman.

Coach Rensing on Schueneman: "Kyle comes to us with great experience from both the Columbus Crew and Vardar Soccer clubs. He has really good pace and continues to impact the final third with goals and assists with his club. Kyle does his best work on the wing where he can run at guys or receive the ball in spaces behind the defense. Similar to Josh, we believe that Kyle is just scratching the surface on where he can take his game. Kyle's work rate and energy on the field is nonstop both when his team has the ball and when they are defending."

Jake Spadafora

Jake Spadafora
Fr., F, 5-11, Northville, Michigan/Northville High School

Prior To MSU: Led the team in scoring from 2017-19 … Played club for Philadelphia Union Academy for head coach Tommy Wilson … Played in the MLS Next playoff in Dallas with No. 3 Philadelphia Union, advancing to the round of 16 in 2021 … Was also captain of the U19 Wolves academy team, playing for head coach Lars Richter …  Plans to major business … Son of Eric and Cheryl Spadafora.

Coach Rensing on Spadafora: "Jake is one of the most dynamic forwards in the country who can both score goals and set teammates up. Physically, he will be ready to impact the Big Ten right away. His experience with both the Philadelphia Union Academy and Wolves Academy has him prepared for the college game. Jake is an extremely hard-working forward who has a real competitive edge. His personality will fit in well with our program."

Jonathan Stout

Jonathan Stout
Fr., F, 5-10, Wyoming, Michigan/Potter's House High School

Prior To MSU: Played at Potter's House High School for head coach Michael Colago … As a senior, currently scored 30 goals to go along with seven assists … During his junior season, scored 46 goals with 13 assists … earned first-team all-state honors, along with all-conference accolades … Has scored at least 20 goals in all four years of high school … Plans to major in data and analytics … Son of Jeffrey and Deanna Stout.

Coach Rensing on Stout: "Jonathan is a very skillful attacking player who can play several positions on the field. He is very good with both feet. He takes players on very well, but also can combine with others. He works really well in the pockets, whether he is a wide player who comes in or a number 10 who plays underneath the forwards. Jonathan has good pace and athleticism. Jonathan is a driven player who is always looking to improve his game. Playing at Midwest United this year in the MLS Next League will prepare him for MSU next year."
