Men's Tennis Set to Host Cleveland State and IUPUI for Weekend Duals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis is back at home this Saturday, January 22 for another pair of dual meets at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans take on Cleveland State at 10 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match with IUPUI.

Fans are welcomed back to Spartan tennis matches under Michigan State's Vaccination Policy for Spectators.

"The Spartans are preparing for two great matches this weekend," Head Coach Gene Orlando said. "Both teams are very talented and will be coming in with a chip on their shoulders and a 'nothing to lose' mentality. We will have to be ready and there's no doubt we will see their best tennis."

Michigan State is coming off an impressive pair of wins last weekend at home. In the team's season opener, the Spartans won 4-3 in an exciting dual with ACC contender Virginia Tech. In the nightcap match, MSU took its motivation from the earlier matches and went on to sweep the opponents from Eastern Illinois, 7-0.

Despite losing the opening doubles point, the Spartans battled back for the tight win against the Hokies. Luke Baylis earned the win-securing singles point for Michigan State in his match that went into two tiebreaker rounds. In the evening against Eastern Illinois, the Green & White swept the competition in doubles and singles, highlighted by season debuts from freshmen Josh Pornoy and Max Sheldon and impressive wins from several returning Spartans.

Also of note was redshirt senior Jack Winkler playing in his first regular season match in over 900 days after battling back from illness in previous seasons. Winkler won his match at No. 2 singles on Saturday, 6-2, 6-4.

The Spartans continue on a streak of home matches stretching until February, and will take on Toledo and Bucknell next Saturday, January 29.
