Men's Tennis Opens 2022 Season at Home against Virginia Tech, Eastern Illinois

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team opens the 2022 season at home this Friday, Jan. 14. The Spartans play host to Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. followed by a dual match with Eastern Illinois at 8 p.m., both inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

"We are super excited to kick off the season this Friday night," Head Coach Gene Orlando said. "We have a very mature, experienced and talented team who work very hard and are committed to each other."

The Spartans took a brief hiatus after playing in several fall tournaments, concluding with the Big Ten Indoor tournament on Nov. 7. It was a busy fall slate for the Green & White as they hosted the annual Drobac/Beeman Invite, Big Ten Indoors and the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament all in East Lansing. Fall play was highlighted by a perfect doubles record for the Spartans at the Notre Dame Bayliss Invite and the WMU Invite, and freshman Max Sheldon advancing all the way to the quarterfinals in the main singles draw of ITA Regionals.

Michigan State hosted the annual Capital City Tennis Classic in November, with senior Jack Winkler making a run to the championship match of the main doubles draw and earning points in the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings.

The Spartans kick off spring competition with 12 home duals, broken up by just two road trips in the month of February. After a trip to the Arizona State Invitational in March, MSU will begin conference play on March 25 against Wisconsin.

"I believe we have a great recipe for a successful start and season," Orlando commented. "We are committed to the process and getting better every day!"
