I was thinking of picking up the Best of Friends 2 DVD Set from DVDEmpire.com, as a 1/5 of her Christmas present. I just wanted to know how good/bad they are...

I've ordered a couple of things from them and haven't had any reason to complain yet. In fact they are still on the "plus" side given the way they handled the Universal Monster box set "problem"

They are excellent! Steve Negri from DVDEmpire always seems to make himself available at DVDTalk to help too. One of my few preferred places to shop for dvds.

I have to give the descenting opinion on DVDEmpire.

I pre-ordered three of the Universal monsters collection at empire and was told that they would be available the day of release. Not only were they not availabel the day of release but for a week later they were still in "back order" status. My emails were not answered until well after the cancellation of the order, and I ended up ordering them at Amazon and paying three times as much in total costs. I guess had i received the kind of service others have I'd throw my support behind them but for now (and that was my first experience) They are just as bad as Express.com.

I have been ordering from Empire for a couple of years. Never had a problem and when I did need to exchange a dvd they were courteous and efficient. The DVDs come on time and without hassle. I recommend them.

I also have to give a thumbs UP to DVDEmpire.

I don't know how they compare to Buy.com, but compared to Express.com and Amazon, they are excellent.

They are very good. Their order management is top rate. I can add to an excisting order no problem or cancel pre-orders without snag (Buy.com are you listening??).
They usually ship their pre-orders to arrive Monday or Tuesday.
Almost forgot one of the best things, NO sales tax to California residents

I'll check in with a minus is the DVD Empire column.

I haven't ordered from them in oh, maybe close to three years. About two weeks ago I placed an order from some empty DVD cases for a freelance project I was working on.

I received a confirmation of order and then the next day I got a e-mail confirming the shipment of the order.

Well, several days past the expected delivery date and well, nothing. So, I wait.

Unrelated, I check the balance of my AMEX card and there's a charge for the cases, then about four days later there's a credit for the same amount.

So I go back and check my DVD Empire account and sure enough the order is now on backorder ... even though DVD Empire has told me the order shipped the day after I placed it.

While upset, it's not earth shattering. I just found it dodgey that they would charge my card and tell me that it had shipped, but neglect to tell me that in reality it did not.
