Does anyone know who plays the tenor sax solo on this song? This morning I was listening to the UK single of Dusty Springfield's The Look of Love. It is a different version from the soundtrack LP. It has haunting strings and a very tasty tenor solo in the style of Getz that is a perfect compliment the Dusty's sultry singing. It is one of those perfect singles.

I tried the search engine and I googled it but there seems to be no definitive answer. The depth of knowledge here is pretty amazing so I thought I'd ask you guys if anyone here has the inside scoop?

Apparently, Reg Guest was the arranger on that single. Maybe someone with a knowledge of Reg's favored musicians would know the name of that sax player.

Yes it must have been a session regular. Some people have speculated it was Ronnie Scott.

I don't think it was Scott. His resumé would certainly reflect it if he'd played on that record.

I agree it would be more widely known. He was a star in his own right especially in the UK.

Try to find out who played sax in the Reg Guest Syndicate, if they had a sax player. If not, it was most probably one of the great session sax players that were in England at that time.

I thought the Reg Guest Syndicate lead was a good way to go, but I'm not finding any more credits for their LPs than I did for the original track. Anyone with any other ideas or the actual saxophonist's credit please let me know.

I don't know the answer but I would love to find out. Besides the Memphis album I just have a CD compilation of Dusty's singles that sounds terrible. I do have some old 45s though that sound awesome. She was an amazing singer and I love her on this song. The Casino Royale version is good too but I think the single trumps it.

Anyone have any thoughts on the saxophone player?

I found this recollection from the late Phil Ramone, who produced the recording:

"We did that in a small studio in London that was owned by Phillips Records. Dusty normally never recorded outside of the vocal booth. In this case, however, she just had a little isolation screen there, which added to the song's taut style and drama...The sax solo was done live by an English studio musician. And what you hear is Burt's [Bacharach] interpretation of the song. He half-sang what he wanted to Dusty in a breathy voice to convey his vision."

Phil would know, if anybody. Maybe someone who knows how to contact Howie Casey or some of the other session sax players from the day could get the right answer?

Phil Ramone produced the soundtrack version. The question concerns the single version, which was recorded later and produced by Dusty's usual producer John Franz.

I am the person who has compiled the "The History of Top 40 Saxophone Solos 1955 - 2011" along with my friend in the UK and I appreciate your reference to our work which has ben updated a lot since the above post was made. Please fell free to send for an updated version. [email protected]

Another link to the most recent updated list is; http://cafesaxophone.com/content.php?208-History-Top-40-Saxophone-Solos but we are now into 2001

The name that has been given to us is DENNIS SPRINGER but I have no confirmation. Teddy Edwards apparently played on the soundtrack from what I have been told.

If anyone eventually confirms the name of the studio tenor please let us know. Thanks!
