Popularly known as the "City of Gentle People". In Dumaguete City beauty in its gentlest form. The place shows serenity, simplicity and most of all safety.
Dumaguete is a university town. The population is somewhat more than 100,000 people, with 30,000 of these constituting the student population. Foremost of the city's educational institutions is Silliman University, the oldest American private university in the Philippines, as well as the first Protestant school to be founded in a predominantly Catholic country. Among the famous landmarks of its campus are the Silliman Hall (built in 1903) which houses the Anthropology Museum, the Luce Auditorium (considered as the Cultural Center of the South) and its Marine Laboratory Museum which houses the 2nd largest whale bone collection in the world.
Frequent voyages from Manila, Cebu City, Tagbilaran, Siquijor and Dapitan are offered with Cebu having the most options and trips. Fast ferries arrive daily from Cebu City, via the main port terminal. It's approximately a 4 hour ride with a stop over in Tagbilaran city.

RoRos are also available, mostly from Manila and the province of Cebu, Take a bus from Cebu City to Lilo-an or Bato, then take a 20-40 min ferry ride to Sibulan, 20 min away from Dumaguete (about 4.5 total travel time). Several daily air-con and non-air-con buses. Ferries leave from Sibulan 05:00-17:00. To get a bus to Lilo-an you must play the game chasing against time; seats are limited and if you don't get a chance to be an early bird in booking a ticket, you'll probably end up sleeping in the bus terminal waiting for the next day's routes.
First Ceres bus trip leaves Cebu at 01:45 and the last trip departs at 18:00. On the other hand, the first bus for Cebu from Dumaguete leaves at 03:15 and the last bus at 14:00. There are several trips in between.
The most common option for getting around Dumaguete is by hiring a tricycle which are ubiquitous in the city. In theory and by law, the city fixes trike rates based on distance and cost of petrol. But in practice, the locals pay a simplified rate of P10 to P20 per person per trip. Because Dumaguete is less than 4 kilometers in size from end to end, it's legally impossible for trike fares to exceed P20 for intra-city travel. Sadly, if you look remotely foreign, it's almost certain the driver will quote a much higher rate or they'll ask how much you want to pay (which is an obvious tip-off to a rip-off). Do not succumb to this blatant form of gouging. Snap a photo of the driver's trike and report the incident to authorities.
The Dumaguete-Sibulan jeepney route travels north-south on the national highway going from the Dumaguete Public Market to the airport to the Sibulan port and vice versa. The fare is between P8 to P11 depending on whether you ride the full distance. This might be a great cost saving option if you're coming or leaving town without bulky luggage. Tricycles to and from the airport will cost P100 per person.
Riding your own 125cc motorcycles is also a popular option and can be rented in several shops along Perdices Street and at the corner of Pinili and Santa Rosa streets. Taxis are sparse but are normally found at the Dumaguete airport and outside the Bethel Guest House on Rizal Boulevard.
Notice Uber and Grab are not available in Dumaguete.
Visit the Boulevard, Silliman University Campus, Maxino College in Barangay Bagacay , Maranatha Full Gospel Church (Sunday morning), the Dumaguete Catholic Cathedral.
Silliman University Anthropology Museum: The Anthropology museum houses many Philippine artifacts that were excavated from many parts of the country dating back hundreds or thousands of years.
Bell Tower: The oldest-surviving structure in the city, reminiscent of the Spanish occupation of Negros Island. It used to be a watchtower to warn the locals against marauding pirates from Mindanao.
Silliman University Whale Bone Museum: Is the 2nd largest collection of whale bones in the world.
By self-driven vehicle: Take the only main road from Dumaguete to Valencia at the foot of the 1,903 m (6,243 ft) Mt TalinisCuernos de Negros volcano, 6 km to the West. Continue on this main road until stopped by a T-junction. Turn right and follow the well paved road for another 4 km (past the Forest Camp. The concrete road begins to climb steeply and then ends abruptly. Continue on the prominent and rutted green lane for 600 m until the entrance hut is visible on the left.
By public transport: take a jeepney/tricycle to Valencia terminal, from there hire a habal-habal (motorcycle driver) to take you to the waterfall (50p). the climb is long and steep so tricycles cannot manage it. You might like to ask your driver to wait 1-2 hours and take you back down since it can be hard finding transportation back to the city.
Pay ₱30 (as November 2019) and give your name to the guardian before 16:30. Descend about 300 concrete steps and 100 iron steps (both with handrails) to the gorge below which has wonderful native forest, butterflies and stands of huge bamboo. Follow the river upstream for about 600 m scrambling over rocks, boulders and the destroyed remains of a concrete path with several river fordings until these 35 m falls appear around a right hand bend in the gorge. Wonderful! Bring togs and towel and allow 30-120 min for the descent, traverse and ascent depending on fitness levels and your state of contemplation. Don't venture behind the plunging torrent. Body recovery teams may be able to retrieve your corpse free of charge but your loss, together with the embalming and bureaucratic hassles of repatriation for a funeral in the survivors' country probably do not make this stupid folly worthwhile.
Redrock Falls / Pulang Bato Falls
A bit far out of town but worth the trip you can visit the Redrock Falls (100p). It is easier to get there by motorbike but you can also negotiate with a tricycle driver to get you there (around 250p one way) the waterfall is located at the base of a mountain, the way there is scenic, the rocks are red and give the falls their beauty. You can also use a jeepney which departs from Valencia Terminal. You need to board to the jeepney to Malaunay (20P as November 2019) and get off at the sign to the Pulang Bato Waterfalls. From here you can just walk around 20 minutes or taking a habal-habal for 50P. There are a few man made pools to take a dip in.
On the way to the waterfalls there is a "hot spring" (70P as November 2019). It is highly recommended not to wear white swim suit and shower properly as the water will paint it red due to natural issues. The hot spring contains of two pools which have a decent temperature and is a perfect place to relax after the hike to the waterfall. There are tables for a picknick or you can order food at the restaurant within the location.
Geothermal Power Plant
On the top of the same mountain as Redrock Falls lies the area's geothermal plant. Cross the small town and meet a guard who will explain that the road is private and you cannot enter. Be friendly and ask about the geothermal station and how you can get an entrance permit. If the guard is nice he will help you. Note that you cannot get a permit on Sundays! If it is Sunday or for any other reason you didn't get a permit you can ask the guard to let you pass him and take a right turn (instead of straight) at the intersection, after a few hundred metres you can turn left (there is a sign directing to the plant). The way up is very beautiful and if you manage to get to the top and the guards are friendly they might even show you a small hot spring you can dip in.
This place is definitely off the beaten track and somewhat more adventurous. Be friendly to the guards and the locals and you will be surprised how far a smile and a good attitude can get you.
Twin Lakes
Take the Dumaguete North Road towards San Juan. Shortly after passing through the town of Sibulan look out for the sign on the left for the Twin Lakes.
It is a 13km uphill ride over a combination of concrete, muddy and rocky roads to the Visitor Center where you will pay the PHP100 entrance fee (as a foreigner) and 12PHP parking fee (motorbike). After another short ride you come to the parking area.
There is a restaurant/shop with a view of the first lake. You can walk down a short path to the shore of the lake. To get to the second lake you need to hire a kayak.
The lakes are not as spectacular as others in the Philippines, but there is a stunning view across to Cebu Island from the road up.
Dauin
Take a southbound Yellow Bus at Ceres Bus Terminal to Dauin (50P as November 2019) or a jeepney (20P). Ask the driver to get off at the Public Market. From here turn left and follow the street to the beach. Here you can rent a snorkeling device in every beach ressort (200P) or even go diving. Very beautiful corals available and not that touristy. A very naturlike beach. You can also stay overnight at Lowland Beach Ressort. Tours to Apo Island available.

Caddy fees are ₱175 or ₱275, golf cart rental ₱400 or ₱650, an umbrella girl ₱120 or ₱180 and golf set rental ₱650 or ₱650 for 9 or 18 holes respectively. The restaurant has a large and authentic Italian brick pizza oven and some other Italian dishes on the menu.
Silliman Zoo, near silliman medical centre (signpost saying). 09:00-16:00 approx. This zoo is run by Silliman University. It conserves endangered philippine native animals which are rarely seen.eg spotted deer, warty pig, crocodile. Well worth the ₱10 entry fee, they also need the financial support. Opposite Silliman University Medical Center follow the "Centrop" sign all the way to the end of the road - it is the green gate on your right.₱10.
Cafe Antonio at the Spanish Heritage Building, Boulevard Area. Fantastic wide-ranging menu, very reasonable prices, lovely chilled out studenty vibe and a great building to host it. Quite honestly a breath of fresh air in the Philippines. Wonderful coffee too![1]
Sans Rival - Try the famous sans rival cake and other amazing cakes baked by one of the oldest cake shops in the city. Pasta, salads and Spanish dishes are also available at the Sans Rival Bistro.
The Why Not? Disco / Restaurant also on Rizal Blvd has a good deli. The restaurant is excellent and has a wide variety of dishes.

This cafe is the first such establishment in Dumaguete City to have a certified nutritionist supervise the food. Coco Amigo's, Blvd. It isn't Mexican food like back home exactly, but a still a tasty take and a good change of pace from most local fare. Also has excellent deserts, a full bar, and quality coffee.

Mt. Talinis is around 1903 and is the second highest mountain in Negros Oriental. Interesting features include lakes, waterfalls, a mossy forest as well as a stream with sulfur vents. Local mountaineering groups frequent the mountain.
Moalboal You can take a jeepney in the direction of Amlan, and be dropped either at the ferry port in Sibulan (10P) or Tampi (20P). From Tampi, the RORO ferry costs 70P (no port fee) and takes 30 minutes to cross. Once in Bato (San Sebastian), you can walk to the Ceres bus terminal (less than 5 minutes; if you go to Liloan from Sibuan you'll need to take a tricycle) or just wait for the bus to come and flag it down. The non-AC Ceres bus to Moalboal is 70P and takes a bit more than 90 minutes. Once in Moalboal, if going to Panagsama beach you can take a motorbike (20P) or walk (40 minutes).
Airport To return to the airport from the city, tricycles will quote ₱100-150. Walk to the Dumaguete Public Market, west of the Holy Child Hospital, and board a jeepney for Sibulan. Fare is ₱8. Trying to hail a full jeepney on Real St is difficult.
Tourist visa extensions available at the Bureau of Immigration located near the Robinson's Supermarket. It's located down a yellow passageway, all the way at the back (a bit shady, but keep going). M-F 8am-5pm. The office is very short-staffed, so regular processing time is "at least 5 working days", costing ₱2,030. The express processing time is 1 working day and cost ₱3,030. Regular 30-day tourist visa must be extended at least 15 days before expiration. Passport is left at the office during the processing period.
