January 1973 brought Duane Lee Chapman Jr. into the world, a bundle of joy for Duane Chapman and his first spouse, La Fonda Sue Honeycutt. In 1976, his baby brother Leland Chapman joined the family. Chapman Jr. quickly charmed his celebrity father, who fell head over heels for him immediately after his birth.

Nonetheless, when Chapman Jr.'s parents decided to tread separate paths, his mother took him and his younger brother Leland away from their father. In his book, Chapman shares his heart-wrenching narrative of life without his boys, prompting him to wage a battle to regain their presence in his life, despite La Fonda's initial refusal to let him see his sons.

Armed with a phone number and the knowledge of the city where his boys resided, Chapman's appeal to an employee at the Colorado Springs Department of Water and Power finally yielded their address. At first, fearing rejection, he couldn't get himself to knock on the door, so he left gifts for his sons on their porch just in time for Christmas.

Half a decade of legalities followed as Duane Chapman fought for time with his sons, which initially consisted of spending time with them on weekends. His next mission was to rebuild the trust of his children, who had been growing up without his presence.

Nevertheless, through persistent effort and undeniable love, both Duane Lee Chapman Jr. and Leland Chapman eventually reconciled with their father, moving in to share a home with him.
