Re: Your Top Ten of 2019
My 2019 Top 10 list as of February 18, 2020
(1) Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
(2) 1917
(3) Ford v Ferrari
(4) Parasite
(5) Knives Out
(6) Avengers: Endgame
(7) El Camino
(8) Shazam!
(9) Midway
(10) John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
Next best:
- Uncut Gems
- Dolemite Is My Name
- Joker
(I do expect this list to change a bit after I watch some need-to-see movies such as The Irishman, Richard Jewell, Jojo Rabbit)
My biggest disappointments of the year (in alphabetical order):
- Angel Has Fallen (I think the 1st 2 movies are solid action movies, but this one forgot how to even be a good action movie)
- Godzilla: King of the Monsters (I really thought this sequel would fix the problems with the 1st movie instead of mostly just adding new ones)
- IT Chapter Two (after the good 1st movie, this one just misfires a lot and is far too long to boot)
- Rocketman (great acting and great music are just not enough, needed far better choreography in the music scenes and a story that didn't omit some of the most interesting parts of Elton John's life)
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (A desperate attempt to right the ship after the trilogy destroying disaster called The Last Jedi, but ultimately ended up being a hyperactive series of pursuits of one macguffin after another)
- Terminator: Dark Fate (probably the best sequel to the original 2 movies, but still a massive disappointment despite having some entertaining action scenes)
- Us (a sophomore slump for Jordan Peele with a half-baked script that needed many more drafts before trying to film it)
(and I'm sure my disappointment list will grow too as I catch up on movies)

Alright. Revised after seeing a few more movies. I will be seeing 1917 next week (since it's technically a 2019 movie) and I still need to see Jojo Rabbit and Book Smart I'm seeing Uncut Gems on Sunday, but I heard the audience scores are mixed.
Not in any particular order of preference:
1. Richard Jewell
2. Bombshell
3. Ford v. Ferrari
4. The Farewell
5. Knives Out
6. Parasite
7. Avengers: End Game
8. Jack Wick Chapter 3
9. Joker
10. Hotel Mumbai
Honorable mentions: Shazam! Long Shot, Rocketman, Toy Story 4, Ready or Not, Hustlers, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
I don't believe that "Best movies" always have to be smart, critically acclaimed prestige movies. Fun movies that you were entertained from start to finish can also fall into the criteria of "Best" I think it's a little narrow minded that some people think they need to have arthouse, foreign or Indie movies in their lists. As long as you had a really good time, were excited, laughed, cried, were moved, cheered, and felt you got your money's worth, then that IMO is all that matters.

Re: Your Top Ten of 2019
I saw 1917 today so that concludes the films I'm interested in seeing for 2019. This is my final list.
1. The Art of Self Defense: I just think this is an amazing black comedy. It embodies that label (black comedy) perfectly. The humor is subtle and boy does the story get dark. Seriously love this movie, so much that it's in my Top 10 of the decade.
2. Knives Out: A very fun film and intriguing who dun it. It had alot of laughs and it was fun watching the mystery being solved. Daniel Craig is amazing in this
3. Parasite: One of the best foreign language films in the last few years. Alot of humor and intrigue. This is a lock for the best foreign film Oscar
4. 1917: A very good war movie. I felt the 1st of the film was stronger than the 2nd. Another pic with a lock for an Oscar, that being cinematography. Beautiful film to look at. This is my favorite among the likely Best Pic nominees.
5. The Irishman: An excellent mob movie. The 3 big names (Pacino, DeNiro, and Pesci) were all in top form. I thought the CGI on DeNiro was alittle sketchy, but the other two were fine. The only downside is the film feels every bit of 3 hrs. Scorsese could have trimmed some fat.
6. Joker: This film surpassed my expectations. I frankly liked the message of the film and think Phoenix is the best he's ever been. I'd be surprised if he doesn't win the Best Actor Oscar. It's kind of surreal to think we could have two Best Actor Oscars for a Joker portrayal.
7. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: I don't think this ranks among QT's best, but it's still a good film. It did feel a bit like a big circle jerk for QT and his A-Listers. But it was a fun film and had some fantastic acting.
8. Uncut Gems: Adam Sandler proves he's a capable actor when he has the right material. A very mentally exhausting film to watch, but expertly made. This felt alittle like old school PTA
9. Avengers Endgame: An awesome ending to the franchise. Film flew by despite its runtime. Humor, great action, and emotion, it had it all.
10. Doctor Sleep: This was another film that surpassed my expectations. I really enjoyed it and think it's an excellent horror movie, one of the better ones in the last few years. McGregor was really good.
Some honorable mentions to films I enjoyed but didn't make the cut:
MidSommar, A Hidden Life, Booksmart, Rocketman, Ad Astra, Ford v Ferrari, Motherless Brooklyn, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Richard Jewell

Re: Your Top Ten of 2019
Sorta off topic, I've always been against "ranking" films in general. I'm a moderator of a similar board, dedicated to horror films, and a couple people there would occasionally say "We have to compile a DEFINITIVE list of the top 100 horror films of all time!". I mean really, who cares? If Friday the 13 part 6 comes in at #72, are you gonna argue that it really should be #41? My attitude was cemented this past summer when I was talking with a friend and I mentioned that I felt Quentin Tarantino's overall best film is Pulp Fiction. He angrily asked "What's wrong with Reservoir Dogs???". Seriously, nothing is "wrong" with Reservoir Dogs. It's a fantastic film, easily one of my all-time favorites. But man, the moment you put a number ranking in front of a film, it immediately implies that another film below it is not as good, and that's often not the case.

Has anyone else noticed that "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is frequently written as "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" but if you look closely at the poster, the "..." is actually after the word "in"
So the version with "..." should probably be written as "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood"
Even IMDB does this ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7131622/ ). Were the "..." in the opening credits? If so, were they before or after the word "in"?

Seems like 2019 has plenty of good films. Seems like any year ending in 9 produces such. I haven't seen any of them yet but will be all set to go buck wild on BF to obtain lots of em.

There are still a handful of movies I want to see from last year (1917, JoJo Rabbit, The Lighthouse) but heres my Top 10 from what Ive seen:
Overall, I though 2019 was a really good year for movies, I liked almost everything with only a few major disappointments (Im looking at you Joker, Hobbes and Shaw, and Godzilla!)
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
- Rocketman
- The Irishman
- Arctic
- Yesterday
- Marriage Story
- Motherless Brooklyn
- Velvet Buzzsaw
- The Highwaymen
- Klaus

Speaking of which....
This masterpiece never got picked up by a distributor (yet!) but is currently available to watch as part of the Seattle International Film Festival as a $15 48-hour rental. Steep, I know, but 100% worth it, since it may disappear into the ether after April 18th.
