Is this a hike? Beach walk? Public or private?

      A:

This is a privately owned area that is intended for the public. It is off leash for dogs in a wooded area above Arroyo Burro beach. Not really a hike more of a walking area. We let our dogs loose and walk about for maybe 45 minutes then head down… more

    • Q:

What kind of terrain? Is the incline gradual or on the steep side? I want to bring my senior arthritic dogs but I need to use a wagon. Any thoughts on how difficult this would be? I would be pulling a total of 120 lbs...yikes!

      A:

It’s pretty flat but can be bumpy because of uneven dirt.

This is a great place to go to walk around in nature near the coastline. There are plenty of views of the ocean and lots of trees. It seems like a perfect spot to watch the sunset over the ocean. I went in the late afternoon and although there were a lot of people, there was a lot of space for us to walk around.

I am giving the place 4 stars because I saw dozens of dogs there roaming around without leashes. Since according to the news dogs fall off of these cliffs and die annually it was pretty disheartening to see so many dogs whose owners didn't have them on leashes. If you are planning to go there with a dog, please make sure they are on a leash so you can protect them from falling.

Quick walk with coastal views. This is primarily an off-leash dog area with dog owners as the predominant demographic on this path. There are several look out points for nothing but ocean but it also overlooks arroyo burro beach and Boathouse at Hendry's.

We parked in the cul de sac at entrance which is all residential homes.

We were told this is the best spot for seeing the sun set as nothing obstructs the view; however we came on a week day morning around 10:30am. It was pretty busy then. We didn't see any issues with the dogs off leash. Occasionally a few of them would run up and sniff us and all the dog owners were friendly with saying "hello" when you pass by.

It's a pretty dusty and dry area with some tanbark on the pathway here and there.

The walk is probably less than 15 minutes.

Great place to hike and bring dogs! Was not too busy and pretty views. Well kept trails, and wide trails too. Our dogs loved it!

This is a great dog park with cliffs. It's a good place to walk around in the afternoon to see the views of the ocean and the beach. Its kept very natural and a little more hidden from the tourist spots. It's more of a local spot for neighbors to walk their dogs.

Its harder to find parking at the peak hour in the afternoon on a sunny day as parking is in the residential area and doesn't have a designated parking lot.

This place is absolutely fantastic. My dog adores the woods, but gets limited opportunities to explore since public trails inevitably require that dogs be leashed. A big space like this where dogs can roam freely is phenomenal. There are trails/paths for humans to walk, but my dog was not the only one driving wildly into the bushes and through the trees.

Caveat: There is a lot of ground to cover and a lot of dense brush. If your dog has anything less than perfect recall, they can very easily get lost. Ask me how I know. But I personally think it's worth my stress to make my dog happy.

No official parking lot, but lots of street parking in the residential neighborhood surrounding the preserve. There's a water station in the middle, but humans should go to the bathroom before arriving. I saw people saying you can walk down to the beach, but it's a sheer cliff, so I don't see how.

Best place ever for outdoorsy dogs!

We stopped by Douglas Family Preserve for a walk before getting back on the road to continue our mini-road trip of California! We had parked nearby for the Mesa Lane Steps/Mesa Lane Beach and just walked over. It's a short loop with lots of people walking their dogs. It's a nice trail with great views.

If you can hold your breath it has lovely views and friendly folks along the way. This spot is basically an open dog park so it smells like urine. All the best spots have abandoned poop bags. You'll be tempted to look up at the beauty but watch your step, there's poop everywhere. On the day of our visit most dogs were offleash and more interested in other dogs than people which was fun to watch the playfulness. Once we got to the cliffs edge looking down at the restaurant the air is better.

10/10 recommended walk to do with your friends, family and especially dogs! I love that this preserve allows you to walk with your dog unleashed. I thought maybe this might be an issue at first since many dogs off leashes while walking makes me nervous for my dog. But, my dog loved it and we did too as owners. There was also a bowl of water for dogs to drink out of and a fountain for refills.

The walk has gorgeous views overlooking the beach below. And, it makes for a great date spot if you want to see the sunrise or sunset!
