Dope Snow? Is it good?

I’ve seen this brand a lot and wanted to know about it cause there’s seems to be people that either hate it or love it. Idk why but to me it seems like the RipNDip on snowboarding. I wanted to get some of their stuff but idk if it’s a good brand or not.

I was looking into them too. I'm female, I like the colors, and it seems like they have a roomier fit than a lot of the women's brands. In the women's snowboarding groups online they get a lot of love, in the co-ed snowboarding groups online lots of dudes say it's "garbage" and for "posers" (do we still care about that if we're adults?)

So, I have not ordered anything yet, but from my research it looks like they were a Swedish start up and Europeans are about it. In the US, there's a lot of hate for their Instagram marketing and, once again, the "poser" comments.

A lot of people who have actually owned products from them say they're good (not the best obviously, look at price point and specs), and they are probably sufficient unless you're taking on some extreme conditions.

I did see a few people who mentioned zipper issues in past seasons, but they claimed that customer service was very responsive and fixed the problem.

I really like that they seem to take customer feedback into a account and try to improve things for future products. Like there was something about wanting the hoods to fit better with the helmets. Sounds like they heard there was an issue and fixed it. Since most companies are jerks about listening to their customers, I'd say that's a positive sign.

The tech behind there gear seems legit. The designs are pretty rad too. They’ve been around since 2008 so it seems reputable.

I say go for it!

I think the hate is because they don’t put any money back into the sport. They don’t sponsor athletes, and they’re mostly about their bottom line. They market exclusively on Instagram and TikTok.

I have rocked a pair of pants and a jacket from them all last season and will be doing the same this season as well. I like the fit and finish of the gear I got, keeps me warm and dry. I’ve got no complaints at all

got one of their less expensive riding hoodies. wore it in Quebec where it ranged from -5 to 15 Fahrenheit. Idk most other jackets with the same waterproof and wind ratings were more expensive. I like my jacket and the color :D not the type of person to judge what somebody else has got on, so if you like it wear it. you can always return it, if you don't like it.

Any suggestions with sizing. I’m looking to get jacket and bibs but not sure how sizing is

Only got a jacket and it's in storage, and I can't find the order email. I'll take it out tomorrow morning and get back to you! I def sized up but I can't remember if it was M or L

Thank you

Edited

So in regular clothing, I tend to wear an S. (5'0 135lb for reference). I sized up to an M! I got one of the Yeti jackets

edit: I think I remember the S fitting but if not if I wanted to fit a fleece underneath. The yeti isn't insulated but that's what I liked. more versatile since we travel to diff places to ski with diff temps. I just change what I wear underneath.

Loved the jacket I got from them so much that I just bought bibs from them too. Honestly skiing and boarding is expensive enough as is; their gear has lots of handy pockets and I’ve had no issues whatsoever with waterproofing or zippers failing. Ride and eat it on advanced runs everywhere from Jackson hole to mammoth. I’m 6’1” 210 and it provides the perfect level of warmth for me as I run hot. On colder days I just throw on another layer like long underwear and a long sleeve shirt. It’s a great product. I’ve never had anyone comment negatively towards me for wearing it and frankly “the community” these people refer to are most likely only hard core ski and snowboard snobs that make fun of people struggling anyway. Who cares what you wear or ride with as long as it works for you and enjoy it! I say the more the merrier and if “mid-tier” gear helps people have more fun then I’m all for it!

Hi! What size did you get?

I personally would get something else - I got a jacket last year but the zipper quality is pretty poor, I had the zipper on one of the pockets fail by falling off the track, but I was able to pull the seams enough to put it back on. It’s also not nearly as warm as my others. I ended up getting a Burton one instead, though I still keep the Dope Snow jacket for cycling commuting since it’s bright. Seems more like “fast fashion” for boarding than a quality product

u/Blahbblahgvh avatar

2 of my burton jackets are having zipper issues and I use them less than my dope jacket. That dope jacket has seen me thru my coldest days and not a single issue with it once

I got one of their jackets last year and I love it. It held up great last season and the quality was no different then my Burton and H/H jackets. But that’s just my two cents.

Any sizing tips

Quality but not high end gore tex level stuff. No different than middle tier gear from any big name brand. Completely functional for resort riding, buy it

u/UhWreckShun avatar

Straight up lie. Proper companies impregnate the waterproofing into the material. Dope just sticks waterproof tape to the inside.

They're shit. Support companies that put money back into snowboarding. Thirtytwo, 686, Volcom,Dakine, Burton., ect. Easy to go online and find good sales, especially at the end of the season.

Edited

That’s my thinking too. Dope and Montec seems to be coming from the big China corporate and they just go on their fashionable marketing and have no interest in making the sport progress. You’ll never see a pro wearing their stuff and there’s a reason for that, they found an industry that had a need for « cheaper quality product » and they’re filling that gap for gear for casual riders and they’ll just move on to another sport when their trend wears off.

u/SpecialistFlamingo27 avatar

Cheaper quality product sounds like a good thing. Gear is expensive enough as it is for beginners. The more people in the sport the better. Maybe the top companies have been price gouging for years and now competition will change that

u/red-broom avatar

Kevin Backstrom rides for them (or did). Just saying

I have both. Honestly Dope is fine for my bluebird days. It’s warm and waterproof. Volcom goretex/ziptech for the days I need a snorkel to ride.

Best way to look like a Jerry is to wear Montec and Dope.

u/vinceftw avatar

I have a soft shell hoodie from Volcom and Dope. They're similar in quality. The Dope has better finishing like elastic waist and sleeves that prevent snow to enter. The Volcom one seems built out of stronger materials and seems more durable. I really miss the ski pass pocket in the sleeve with the Volcom jacket...

All in all, I think you get decent stuff for the price.

similar price for Montec, great quality, lots of styles and good shipping. on the more expensive of cheap side but really nice!

I like their casual clothing line like hoodies and beanies. They're warm.

It’s “stylish” and overpriced. The waterproofing is very basic and traps in too much heat, sort of like a sauna suit. It has vents to get the steam out, but that’s about it. They work, but at that price point there are MUCH better options.

u/Quasawnt avatar

Do you have any recommendations for good brands at that price point?

u/red-broom avatar

686, thirtytwo, airblaster, Volcom

They look good but seem to have a negative reputation to some as being cheap and nooby.

I have good amount of their stuff and I have no complaints about any of it. I rode in all sorts of conditions last season, everything’s held up well and I was always warm. I really like the fit compared to other things I’ve worn.

I'd highly recommend their snow coats and jackets. I bought one last year and found it to have high quality zippers and components along with just the right amount of insulation to keep me warm in all conditions. I purchased the womens akin w lilac snowboard jacket. They ship fast, have great customer service and produce their products with sustainable materials.

u/aaalllen avatar

Just know that they and their sibling Montec are EU sizing. So add +1 for US

Quality is on the „Okay“-Side. Ethics of Dope/Montec are on the „Hell-No“-Side.

Depends on you, how much worth you put on good Ethics or if you can handle getting judged by everyone riding for more than 2 months.

u/Quasawnt avatar

What do you mean by ethics?

Releasing „okay“- Quality (which is quite good as in Wintersports), producing several different Fashionlines in one season, having everything all the time in stock, having a good customer support, extreme advertisement budget;

all of those features above, which are quite pricy and then they sell for cheap prices (3/5 below the business standard).

You cannot handle this for years without questionable Productionlines. Ressources (environment) and workers are the chainlink where they save money to sell for this sort of prices.

As i said: Don‘t think about it, if ethics are nothing you think about. But the Snowboard/Ski Community will judge you. Some more, some less.

Hate to Necro revive your comment, but where the fuck do you think our name brands get their products from? America? Canada? Dude it's all slapped together in shops in fuckin Indonesia, China, HK... That's why companies that we grew up with can do what they do now. Corp greed goes all the way from the little guys (Dope/Montec);all the way to the big guys (Burton, Volcom, 32, Dakine, Quiksilver, etc). They're marketing to the next generation it'll bring in more snowboarders close the gap between skiers and once the noobie snowboarders find love for the community and sport, maybe they'll start paying 400 dollars for this year's name brand jacket rather than 160 for some (Dope apparel) that works just fine, offers a style that caters to the zoomer kids and is fucking affordable... Name brands don't need to be making 200% on their products. And if you think they aren't you're world is gonna flip if you actually dig...

Hey there, getting your point, as you see Dope/Montec as little guys. But they are not. They are around for quite some time (2008) make insane figures and still don‘t care about environment or POW, or 1% for the Planet. They produce a lot of outerwear. Still the Quality varies a lot.

Productionlines are also important. Just because it is from China doesn‘t mean it is made without thinking about the workers. The Production Price will also differ in China. There are better and worse Productionlines.

I did not say, that you have to avoid the brand, but you as consumer are responsible which brands you support. There are as cheap options and cheaper options as Montec and Dope. They just don‘t look as fancy, or don’t have that many different colour schemes, but are supportive to what is important for the people who care about the environment or the workers. Since we won‘t have that much snow in a few years, for the people who are already in the „community“ the point environment is important. For Beginners it is not.

You state it like there is literally no other option, that buying mid price tier Montec/Dope or premium Price goods.

Also it is not important to bring a lot of people into Wintersports. Wintersports don‘t struggle because of a lack of People doing it. Snowboarding or Skiing don‘t lack fun. And will never. We do not have to bring the fun back into Wintersports. It never went away.

The „Name“ Brands are not the answer. The Brands that look into the future and support systems, that try to give us more winters to do Wintersport are the Brands, i want to support.

Agreed 100%, it's worse for the other brands to exploit those resources and still not pass the savings on so struggling kids can still get on the mountain and stay dry. Way worse.

If you just ride casually it will hold up but you can find better quality stuff from actual snowboard brands for the same price

u/backflip14 avatar

Consensus seems to be that it’s ok. Dope and Montec are the same company. They have a rep for being more like fast fashion than actually supporting snowboarding and skiing like other brands do.

u/murphjean21 avatar

I got a pullover jacket and love it.
