Kona Dog Beach is a pet friendly beach just a 3.5 mile drive north of downtown Kona.

The beach is a quiet cove on the south side of the Honokohau Marina. Visitors can park in the gravel, pull out just outside the gate, and then walk a short stony path that heads south leading down to the cove. The beach is a small sandy crescent area with areas giving some shade to the sand.

The Dog Beach is technically a part of Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park, though the park tends not to keep tabs on the area, so it has become a spot for local owners to bring their pets to run on the beach. But the lack of oversight is also the reason the beach does have a bit of an off-the-grid feel. There are no amenities - no water, bathrooms or trash cans - so owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and hauling any trash out.

The shallow cove is also popular with snorkelers with the clear waters. There are a few archeological ruins around the beach as well, though none are signed or have any additional information.

If bringing your pet, you may likely find you have the beach to yourself in the mornings. Weekends around afternoon can be a busy time with people bringing their dogs.

Beach goers looking for a quiet beach might also find the beach appealing during weekdays.

Beach hours are sunrise to sunset. Remember to bring your own bags and to pick up after your pet.
