I hate a lot of things, and I don't particularly like anything. What I have is not a dream, because I will make it a reality. I'm going to restore my clan, and kill a certain someone.

Sasuke Uchiha is Naruto's rival and The Lancer of Team 7, a prodigy who possesses the power copying Sharingan bloodline limit; he is also the father of Sarada Uchiha in Boruto. He's one of the last remaining members of the Clan, who were mostly murdered by his Aloof Big Brother Itachi in a single night. Since the incident, Sasuke focused himself to acquire enough power to kill Itachi and avenge the clan. Initially a loner and so-not-a-team player, Sasuke develops a grudging respect for Naruto. He eventually grows jealous of the possibility of Naruto outshining him, and abandons Konoha and heads off to join Orochimaru, who desired his Sharingan. Not even an epic battle with Naruto could change his mind.

In Shippuden, he returns, stronger than ever, and now knows of the Nine-Tailed Fox inside Naruto. He disposes of Orochimaru, forms a team of the latter's old captives and associates, calling the team "Snake" (Hebi), and finally faces his brother in battle. However, Tobi, the true leader of Akatsuki, reveals the tragic truth behind the Uchiha Massacre and that the object of his revenge was just as much a victim as Sasuke was. To that end, Sasuke renames his team "Hawk" (Taka) and changes his revenge to wiping out the village of Konoha. Along the way on this new path, Sasuke becomes much darker and ends up having a bounty be placed on his own head for capturing the Raikage's brother, Killer Bee (a unsuccessful capture, as everyone eventually learns). Now focused squarely on the man who orchestrated the Uchiha massacre, Danzo, Sasuke attacks the 5 Kage summit all for the chance to kill him.

After several battles that nearly end Sasuke's life, he finally succeeds in killing Danzo but his newfound hatred overwhelms him, alienating even his most devoted followers and old allies, (Karin, Konoha 12, Kakashi, etc.) leaving Naruto as the one person who still wants to save Sasuke without killing him (even Sakura deciding to try to kill him for the sake of her love for who he used to be, though she ends up unable to go through with it out of that same love). Later Sasuke takes Itachi's eyes to save himself from blindness and obtain new powers. Through fate and chance, Sasuke once again meets up with his brother Itachi, brought back by Edo Tensei, and together they manage to stop the caster of the technique, though not before Itachi manages to change Sasuke's mindset from mindless revenge and get him to start thinking for himself instead of always allowing himself to be influenced by others. He also apologizes for the pain he put his little brother through, and the mistakes he made in taking on so many burdens alone.

After reviving Orochimaru and enlisting his help in bringing back the four original Hokages, Sasuke learns of the origins of the village system and its many problems and resolves to protect the legacy his brother left behind by becoming the next Hokage. To this end, Sasuke leaves for the battlefield to face off against Madara and the Ten-Tails. Through many hardships, Sasuke gains half the power of the Sage of the Six Paths and helps Naruto in the fight with the Ten Tails jinchurukis and finally the Ten Tails true form itself. It is likewise revealed he is the latest of the Uchiha to have the chakra spirit of the Sage's son Indra clinging to his own spirit, influencing his sanity slippage and power-seeking behavior. It is then that Sasuke reveals his plans of bringing about "revolution" by murdering the five Kage and taking on all the world's hatred for himself, thereby uniting the villages and the world through fear and anger toward him so that they don't turn against each other again; his definition of being "Hokage", and his interpretation of what Itachi did for the ninja world. Naruto notes the stupidity of this idea, stating that he learned nothing from Itachi (especially his mistakes) and resolves to end their feud once and for all.

Ultimately Naruto wins their final clash and finally redeems Sasuke, causing him to let go of all his hatred by accepting said loss, ending the thousand year feud between Indra and Asura and the curse that accompanied it. After being pardoned by the Five Great Nations, as penance for his actions, he resolves to travel the world to see things with new eyes and to investigate the original purpose of the White Zetsu army, fearful that the alien forces that inadvertently birthed the ninja world may one day resurface. Along the way, he also returns Sakura's feelings. They eventually marry and together they have one daughter, Sarada Uchiha.

Later Sasuke becomes the personal teacher of his rival's son, Boruto.

Above Good and Evil: According to Kishimoto, anyway. Specifically, it's that he simply doesn't care about whether an action he takes is good or bad, only whether or not it's in his self-interest. Itachi describes Sasuke at one point as "pure," and cautions that this means he can be easily dyed any color, i.e. turn very good or very bad. He eventually matures out of his ignorance.
The Ace: Sasuke comes from one of the most famed and powerful clans in history. He was one of the most talented students at the Academy. Sought after by every female class member (sans Hinata) before and after his school days. At the end of the series, he is one of the two strongest ninja alive.
Acquired Poison Immunity: Kakashi postulates that Orochimaru has immunized Sasuke to all poison, so even if Sakura hadn't lost the will to kill him, her poisoned kunai probably wouldn't have worked.
Action Dad: By the Epilogue, he has a daughter with Sakura named Sarada.
Adaptational Early Appearance: Like the other members of the Konoha 12, he appears in episode 1 of the anime.
Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga, Sasuke clearly had black hair. The anime adaptation gives his hair a bluish tint until he turns evil, whereupon his hair is solid black.
Aesop Amnesia: He cannot learn a lesson about revenge to save his life. Over and over, people have tried to (sometimes literally) beat it into him that he's just lashing out because he can't figure out any other way to cope, to no effect. Similarly, Sasuke constantly has it drilled into his head that teamwork and allies are important to him yet he constantly throws them to the side when he needs to, such as the Kage Summit after growing to value Team Hawk as more than tools for vengeance. In the final arc, Naruto actually calls him out for completely ignoring the lesson they just learned, to which Sasuke merely responds that it no longer applies to him. Though a lot of this is Justified Trope as each time he does learn it, events and or people proceed to drive him further off the deep end (such as Itachi traumatizing him for the second time or Tobi telling him the truth). After all, doing the same thing and expecting different results is madness. In the end, he comes around, lets go of his revenge, and admits his appreciation of the feelings of those who kept caring about him.
Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Itachi would affectionately poke his forehead when they were younger. Sasuke himself does this to Sakura before leaving on his journey of self-redemption, and Sarada at the end of Naruto Gaiden.
Alliterative Family: Sasuke shares his first syllable with his wife, Sakura and daughter, Sarada.
All for Nothing: Sasuke is understandably crushed when he learns the truth about the Uchiha Massacre. See Heroic BSoD.
Almighty Janitor: Sasuke is not even assigned a ninja rank, since he's a rogue ninja, but is on par with the Seventh Hokage in power.
Aloof Ally: Towards Tobi and Orochimaru, as he only worked with them to achieve his own goals and betrayed them as soon as they stopped being useful to him in his quest for revenge.
Always Second Best: He starts quite a bit stronger than Naruto, just for Naruto to catch up and ultimately surpass him. After being surpassed, the gap between their power alternatively widens or narrows, but Naruto remains at least a little stronger all the way to the end. This pattern plays out, beat by beat, during both parts of the manga, and is also the dynamic that Madara and Hashirama had during their time.
Always Someone Better: Naruto and Itachi. Sasuke also believes Boruto has this potential. Conversely, Naruto feels this way toward him too.
Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Sasuke tries to bond with Sarada by taking her to Konoha's Parent and Child festival but all his attempts become awry, much to his dismay. In the end, he encourages Sarada to pursue her ambition to become the Hokage.
Sasuke: Peanut.

Sasuke: You're my cute little peanut.
Amazon Chaser: Implied with Sakura. In Chapter 632, Sasuke gives a rather flirty smirk◊ when Sakura first shows the power of her White Strength Seal during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Later, when their daughter Sarada demonstrates a chakra-enhanced punch like her mother, Sasuke sports that same proud smirk.
…And That Little Girl Was Me: In Boruto, when he travels to the past and gets to interact with a 12-year-old Naruto who's still reeling from Sasuke's defection from the village; he tells Naruto (who's unaware of his true identity) the story of an "old friend" who abandoned his comrades in search for power but how he never gave up on him and in the end he managed to knock some sense into him and smile together, which cheers Naruto up.
Animal Motifs: He has 2 actually:
- Snakes, being Orochimaru's apprentice. He can summon snakes at any time to protect him and fight with him. The first name of his team is "Hebi" (meaning "snake"). His primary snake summon, Aoda, is an aversion as he is a very polite, loyal, and non-malicious creature.
- Hawks, which becomes more obvious after he loses Orochimaru's curse mark. He uses an illusion in which feathers pierce the person, he learns to summon a hawk. Even his hair kinda look like a bird's feathers. Also, "Taka" (meaning "hawk") is the second name of his team.
Anti-Hero:
- After meeting Itachi once again, he decides to seek answers from the previous Hokage with Orochimaru's help, and upon learning about the Uchiha, the Senju, what are Shinobi, and what is a village, Sasuke decides that he will become Hokage, and build a better system than the one that created him. Sadly, he plans to do this by killing the current Kage, controlling the Tailed Beasts and starting a revolution, which brings him right back to Anti-Villain.
- During the war, he performs several actions that look cynical or even outwardly cold-hearted in comparison to Naruto, such as trying to burn the Ten-Tails with Amaterasu while the Tailed Beasts are still stuck in it, immediately trying to kill Tobi and Madara once they're deprived of their powers, claiming he only saved Sakura and Kakashi because they were near Naruto who has to stay alive since the two of them are the only ones capable of defeating Madara and Kaguya, although Naruto calls him out on it and implies he did it on instinct, and ignoring Obito as Naruto futilely tries to stop him from crumbling.
- This is Played Straight after his permanent Heel–Face Turn. While undoubtedly wanting to do what best for the village, he still retains his cold and aloof attitude for the most part.
Anti-Villain: He only wanted his clan members avenged. Over time, he slips more into being a full-fledged villain, until he gets a chance to meet Itachi again and learns the truth from the Hokages...then he takes a flying leap off the slippery slope and Naruto has to punch the good back into him.
An Arm and a Leg: Loses his left arm in the final clash with Naruto, while also costing Naruto his right arm. Unlike Naruto, Sasuke decided to forgo getting an Artificial Replacement despite it being offered to him, implied to be so that he never forgets the costs and consequences of his poor choices that led to losing that arm.
Arch-Enemy:
- He’s one of these to Naruto after defecting from the village. The two have been longtime rivals for the series. Sasuke resents Naruto for growing stronger than him, and the two has constantly trained for years to surpass each other. Sasuke plotted the destruction of the Leaf Village, and Naruto is determined to prevent him. Although Naruto still considers Sasuke a friend, Sasuke doesn't return his sentiment and is determined to kill Naruto to sever his personal bonds and become stronger. The two of them are reincarnated from previous sets of archenemies, it is believed that the two of them would kill each other if they fought to the death. The battle between Naruto and Sasuke becomes the final fight in the main series.
- Itachi, his older brother is a subverted one. After Itachi showed him a vision of him killing their parents and the rest of the clan, he swore revenge on him until they finally confront each other years later. Sasuke survives, Itachi does not, yet in those final moments of the battle he learns that Itachi still cares about his little brother despite what he did. Then Sasuke learns more from Tobi that Danzo was the one ordered the Uchiha massacre and manipulated Itachi into killing the rest of the clan in exchange for sparing Sasuke's life.
- Danzo is one to him due to him being the real reason behind his Start of Darkness, the Uchiha massacre and for manipulating his brother Itachi Into killing his own clan.
Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: In his relationship towards Naruto and his desire to fight only strong opponents to achieve his goal of killing Itachi Uchiha. This has him lose to Rock Lee and nearly die in facing Gaara. Losses to Itachi and others teach him at least some humility, at least at first.
Arrows on Fire: His Susanoo employs a bow that can fire arrows at rapid speeds. Though most of these arrows are made of the same chakra as Susanoo itself, Sasuke can also fashion arrows made from Amaterasu's flames.
Artificial Limbs: Zig-Zagged. Unlike Naruto, Sasuke opted not to get one after losing his own left hand during their final duel. He does however have ways of generating a temporary replacement as needed, such as a partial Susanoo via his Sharingan or a metal arm via the Asura Path of his Rinnegan.
The Atoner: After finally seeing the error of his ways, Sasuke begins Walking the Earth to seek atonement, with a promise to return. He does return at various points, but eventually starts a mission that lasts for years, seeking the truth behind Kaguya's creation of the Zetsu army as only he can.
Aura Vision: The Sharingan allows him to see chakra and even discern chakra type.
Avenging the Villain: After he learns Itachi had good motives for his evil acts, Sasuke is driven by a desire to fix things in his honor. Unfortunately, Sasuke is also too revenge-minded to care that Itachi himself does not approve of his methods, and only went as far as he did because he, Itachi, thought it was the better of two bad options. Sasuke is actually called on this by Naruto and simply ignores it.
Awful Truth: He was much less dour and a lot less crazy, when he believed that Itachi slaughtered their clan just to test his skills and not under the orders of Konoha.
Ax-Crazy: During the Kage Summit arc. Meeting Itachi again dispels his psychopathic behavior but doesn't make him a much better person.
Babies Ever After: The epilogue reveals he and Sakura had a daughter named Sarada.
Badass Boast: Delivers an epic one at the end of the "Eternal Mangekyo" Fragment chapter in Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3.

Badass Long Coat: He has one as an adult.
Badass Teacher: Sasuke becomes the mentor of Naruto and Hinata's son, Boruto, in Boruto: Naruto the Movie.
Bad Boss: Towards Team Taka. He left Juugo and Suigetsu at the Kage Summit to be captured by enemies, and he stabbed through Karin to kill Danzo when the latter took her hostage.
Bait the Dog: Thought his Heel–Face Turn marked an actual change in behavior? Nope. He's made it pretty clear he intends to kill Naruto once everything's said and done, though he has changed from destroying Konoha to avenge his family to become the evil of the world, the ultimate enemy that will force the Villages to unite and create lasting peace. Indeed, once Kaguya was dealt with, he immediately decided to start a revolution to Take Over the World.
Bastard Understudy: Towards Orochimaru.
Battle Aura: Gains two: when Susano'o first manifests, and the Version 1 Cloak Naruto gave him, which also boosts Susano'o to tailed beast size.
Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Psychological torture in his case. Three times, each worse than the last:
- First when he was 8 years old. The Tsukuyomi forced him into an illusion where in the span of a second in real time, he relived his clan's extermination, all of it lasting a second in the genjutsu and he lives through 72 mental hours of this. The whole ordeal made him go from a happy and stable child to a socially inept, revenge obsessed one.
- Second time after he re-encountered his big brother, who broke several of his bones before repeating the same torture he went through as a child and thus left him in a month-long coma. This new trauma undid all the gradual healing and progress he made toward psychological recovery, destroyed his self-worth and belief in being able to defeat him (and/or protect the people Sasuke grew to care for). It also proceeded to leave him fresh wounds and a much greater disturbed psyche. His troubled state led to him becoming much more obsessed over vengeance and caused him to sever all his bonds to join one of the biggest monsters in the series.
- The third time is after his fated fight with Itachi, and it's all the more insidious since it doesn't even involve a genjutsu, just one Awful Truth mixed with half-truths and subtle lies: Still reeling from the brutal fight with his brother, who died at Sasuke's feet, feeling completely exhausted and no longer with a purpose, Sasuke is then forced to listen to Tobi, who takes advantage of Sasuke being at his most vulnerable to manipulate him by telling him that Itachi was just following orders. This, along with some clever wording, turns Sasuke's entire world view on its head, washing away what's left of his sanity and pointing his hatred at the Leaf Village, who then Sasuke swears to destroy.
Betty and Veronica: The "Veronica" (arrogant, top-student who later becomes a rogue ninja) to Naruto's "Betty" (friendly, hardworking ninja who later becomes a messiah-like person) for Sakura's Archie. In the end, Sakura marries the Veronica, while Naruto marries the Betty (Hinata) in his own love triangle.
Beyond Redemption: He turned to the dark side, and Naruto trying his best to change him led to Sasuke repeatedly rejecting him. While he remains optimistic that he will eventually turned back to the light, everyone else in the Hidden Leaf Village thinks Sasuke is no longer worth redeeming when his vendetta for his clan's massacre is focused on the village itself. Even Sakura and Kakashi think it's impossible after she was almost killed by him during his rampage, and he was appalled of him showing no hesitation of attacking her. Eventually, it was Sasuke who chose to redeem himself through a combination of Itachi's will and Naruto defeating him in their final fight at the Valley of the End.
Big Brother Worship: Sasuke truly idolized and loved Itachi, despite everything, which makes for interesting internal conflicts at different points in the story.
Big Ego, Hidden Depths: In part I, Sasuke is outwardly arrogant but we discover that he is insecure about and unsatisfied with his abilities when compared to his brother's strength. Later on he also shows himself to be truly concerned with the effects of war and the meaning of being a shinobi, due to the pain he personally experienced.
Black Eyes of Crazy: When using his Cursed Seal of Heaven's second stage, his sclera turn black and his irises yellow, though he usually uses his Sharingan in conjunction with it.
Blatant Lies: "I spared your (Naruto) life on a whim, nothing more." Sure, it couldn't have had anything to do with you not wanting to stoop to Itachi's level in gaining power via that method i.e. killing your closest friend.
Blessed with Suck: While the Sharingan gives Sasuke a great deal of power, especially once it becomes the Mangekyo and later Eternal Mangekyo variants, according to Tobirama, it affects his mental state and causes him to go crazy.
Blue Is Heroic: His main color scheme is blue and he was indeed heroic in Part I, but not a lot in Part II.
Bolt of Divine Retribution: His strongest technique, Indra's Arrow, evokes this.
Bow and Sword in Accord: His Susanoo has two weapons, a sword and a crossbow.
Break the Cutie: In his backstory, when he was Forced to Watch his brother murder his clan, at the age of eight. Repeatedly. For 72 hours in his mind.
Breath Weapon: Many of Sasuke’s Fire Release techniques revolve around him spewing fire out of his mouth, such as the Great Fireball Technique and the Dragon Fire Technique.
Broken Ace: Sasuke was introduced as The Ace in contrast to Naruto, being extremely skilled, popular, wanted by all the girls, and basically being the top of his class. As the series goes on, it becomes clear how truly damaged Sasuke is from the death of his clan, and as he tries to adjust to his friends, Itachi's reappearance causes him to slip fully back into vengeance above all else. By the final arc, he's one of the strongest mortals to have ever existed in the world, but he's become so blinded by his rage, despair, and pain, that he tries his hardest to become an in universe Hate Sink, just because he holds that much rage towards the world. It takes Naruto literally beating into him the idea that he cares for him for Sasuke to recover and try to undo what he's done.
Broken Bird: Sasuke Uchiha is a perfect gender flipped example, even down to being very attractive, taking on a big brother type of role in team 7 (for a time), and becoming physically aggressive when he gets re-traumatized bringing up a lot of his suppressed emotions. Although Naruto at first sees Sasuke as just a jerk, Sasuke's statement at the start that he 'doesn't really like anything' hints at how numb and disconnected he is. His actions to protect the other members of team 7 at the cost of his own life also hint at his trauma. Sasuke becomes increasingly disconnected from others and desperate following his interactions with Itachi and Orochomaru's minions. Naruto, who at first doesn't take it that seriously, is shocked when he sees Sasuke's sadness and starts to realize how broken Sasuke actually is. Sasuke's story becomes all the more tragic when we see how happy and kind Sasuke was as a kid prior to the massacre.
Broken Pedestal: Sasuke becomes this to Sarada. Their first meeting completely tarnished whatever fatherly image she had of him. His coldness towards her did not help. Later, she admits that while he may not be the best dad, his abilities are impressive. By the end of Gaiden, her relationship with Sasuke improves.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The "broody about his past" Boy to friendly Sakura's Gentle Girl.
Brutal Honesty: Sasuke will be really forthcoming about how much he wants to destroy you, among other things.
The Brute: Ultimately all he was to Tobi; he utilized Sasuke's Mangekyo Sharingan and increasingly irrational mindset for as long as he was sure Sasuke would stay somewhat loyal to him, and offers him to Kabuto once he's done.
But Now I Must Go: At the end of the manga, Sasuke leaves to Walk the Earth after reconciling with Naruto and Sakura.
Byronic Hero: To Naruto's All-Loving Hero; Sasuke, having been deliberately traumatized by Itachi, begins the series as a brooding revenge-obsessed loner. While he starts to grow out of this, his later loss (and second torture session) proceeds to just break him and he defects from the village to join Orochimaru in search of more power. After learning the truth of his brother's past, Sasuke swears to avenge Itachi by destroying Konoha, casting aside his allies as his hatred consumes him. After speaking with the resurrected Itachi, Sasuke then decides to overthrow the current system by killing the Kage and setting himself up as the ultimate evil, so that the villages will have to remain united to oppose him. Even after he lets go of his hatred, he continues to carry a chip on his shoulder for quite some time, because of his guilt about his actions.

Cain and Abel:
- With Itachi, whom he attempted to kill as revenge for killing their entire clan. Zig-Zagged, as Itachi also served as his Cain.
- To Naruto, whom he called his best friend, brother and considers his most precious person whom he must kill at all cost.
Can't Catch Up:
- This, towards Itachi, was what ultimately made him leave the Leaf. He felt threatened when it appeared that Naruto could catch up with and eventually surpass him, as it was a reminder that he wasn't close to catching up to Itachi, if he couldn't be the best in his own team.
- And again in comparison to Naruto during the fight against Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki Obito. After it became clear that Naruto had pretty much surpassed him and was currently one of only two people (the other being a zombie) that can actually hurt Obito, Sasuke watched on, silently surprised by Naruto's progress. This is played with, as when everyone was exhausted and Naruto hesitated to go forward against Obito in battle, Sasuke went forward first and inspired Naruto to go as well. Even after Sasuke realizes that he could use Jugo to augment his techniques so they work on Obito, he was still relying on both Naruto's power and Jugo's power to stay in the game, while Naruto is that powerful all by himself.
- After they both gain Hagoromo's power, Sasuke seemingly ends up with the shorter stick, as his power boost having mostly enhanced abilities he already had and giving him a more much powerful Perfect Susano'o, Rinnegan, and the Swap Teleportation Amenotejikara, while Naruto got several new powers out of the deal due to now having all nine Biju sealed inside him and mastering Senjutsu previously. However, Sasuke does end up getting several powerups after that battle finishes (including the Preta Path and Deva Path), under the justification that it had simply taken him that long to get a handle on them. Naturally, his finally catching up sets the stage for him to assume the mantle of the manga's final opponent.
- Naruto Gaiden and Boruto: Naruto the Movie reveal that while he may not match Naruto in terms of sheer power, Sasuke comes close and he is a match in terms of skill and ability.
Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Orochimaru believes this is the reason why they along with Kabuto ultimately are pardoned from their crimes after the Fourth War.
Character Development: He's introduced as the best of his class and it's soon established that he considers teamwork a waste of time. He changes a lot through the course of the story, although it's not always in a good way.
- After bonding with Naruto and Sakura during their adventures together as Team 7, he's willing to give his life to protect them. It's a pretty big change from his "I must live so I can kill my brother someday" mindset. Sadly, this goes down the drain when he meets Itachi again and after his jealousy of Naruto gets the better of him.
- He never was as energetic or cheerful as Naruto, being far more low-key than him. But after the Time Skip, he's grown so stoic that he doesn't show any emotion at all, not even when he's threatening to kill someone.
- As he increasingly succumbs to the Curse of Hatred, he becomes more bloodthirsty and ruthless. Initially, he defies Orochimaru's order to kill a bunch of mooks he defeated; protects Team Hebi during the fight with Killer B as he witnesses them trying to save him, which makes him think of team 7; refuses to transplant Itachi's eyes out of respect for his brother's desire to protect Konoha; and only wants to target those directly responsible for the Uchiha Massacre. Later, he slaughters a group of samurai to get to the Kage Summit, abandons Suigetsu and Juugo to pursue Danzo, impales Karin to get to Danzo, goes Laughing Mad when Kakashi confronts him, tries to kill Sakura twice and Naruto countless times, transplants Itachi's eyes, kills White Zetsu to test his new power, and decides he wants to wipe out all of Konoha since they unknowingly benefited from Itachi's sacrifice.
- Just as it seems he's beyond all hope, he runs into the Reanimated Itachi and speaks with him, leading to his questioning his blind devotion to vengeance. After talking to Hashirama, he settles on wanting to become Hokage and revolutionize the ninja system... by killing Naruto and the Five Kage and enslaving the Tailed Beasts, thereby becoming a threat so powerful the nations will have to remain unified to stand against him. It's only after Naruto finally defeats him that Sasuke lets go of his hatred and sets out to redeem himself.
- As an adult, Sasuke has been able to heal from his trauma and find peace in many ways — as highlighted when he runs into a person very similar to his past self. Accordingly he becomes a genuinely warm and caring person towards his wife and daughter, and is also more polite and friendly to his friends and comrades. He has also been freed from the Curse of Hatred and accepted the Will of Fire.
Character Shilling: Naruto just can't stop singing the guy's praises to Sarada and Chocho, even calling him an admirable ninja. However, given his audience and the circumstances behind Sasuke's long absence, it's actually pretty understandable.
Char Clone: Lack of mask aside, he’s been The Rival seeking vengeance for most of the series and attempted to become the Dark Messiah in order to end the endless wars near the end of it, he also later takes up the role of a mentor figure for Boruto in the sequel.
Chick Magnet: Sasuke has so many emotional problems that he hardly even notices the girls that become entranced by him. You could probably count the number of girls his age (and younger... and a bit older...) who don't show attraction to him on a single hand. Considering he gets most of this when he's twelve, it gets a bit ridiculous at times. Things do even out later though.
Childhood Friend Romance: In the epilogue and Seventh Hokage Gaiden. Him and Sakura are married and have a daughter together, Sarada Uchiha.
The Chosen One: A position that he shares with Naruto. Both he and Naruto are the two Children of Prophecy that are destined to change the ninja world. They later meet the Sage of Six Paths who reveals that they are the reincarnations of his two sons, and gives each of them a half of his power so that they can defeat Madara, and later Kaguya.
Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: He changes allegiances/betrays people so often and for so little reason that it's a wonder anyone trusts him anymore. In order, he betrayed the Leaf Village (along with a personal betrayal of both his teammates); Orochimaru; Itachi's beliefs; Akatsuki; Jugo and Suigetsu; Karin; Sakura (again); White Zetsu; and, near the end of the series, the entire Shinobi world. Some of his betrayals are reasonable, but most go along the lines of "if I stay loyal, I don't get anything out of it". Tobi seems to have noticed this trend and beat him to the punch by promising to hand him over to Kabuto.
Color Motifs: Sasuke manages to have three color that symbolize him: Blue, Purple, and Black. Three different colors that represent his goals and mentality during the series.
Combat Clairvoyance: In combat, the Sharingan allows Sasuke to see fast-moving objects and, once fully developed, offers predictive capabilities: that can anticipate an opponent's next move based on the slightest muscle tension in their body and act accordingly to dodge or intercept. By the end of Part I, Sasuke developed the third tomoe of the Sharingan and was able to predict Naruto's movement to an impressive degree. He became skilled enough to react to the Raikage's Lightning Release Chakra Mode and dodge his elbow attack then counter with a Chidori.
Combination Attack: He can combine his Inferno Style Flame Control with Naruto's Wind Style Rasenshuriken.
Comedic Underwear Exposure: If you use the sexy reverse harem technique in the last game, Naruto and Sai will forcefully strip him down to just his boxers and will use an Amaterasu technique on Konan, Temari or Hinata.
The Comically Serious: Mostly in the fillers, with his stoic and deadpan personality actually being used to hilarious effect when it comes to certain situations that Team Seven find themselves in. "Gotta See! Gotta Know! Kakashi-Sensei's True Face," and "The Worst Three-Legged Race" are some of the best examples of this.
Confusion Fu: Downplayed in that he does have a distinct style to call his own, but by the end of the series he has such a wide array of techniques and skills — courtesy of his multiple teachers and his Uchiha heritage — that he gives off this impression in comparison with most of the other major characters, who stick to their gimmick alone. The only characters who rival his level of versatility are Kakashi — the Copy Ninja, and Madara, and even he tends to rely mostly on his ocular powers or on Wood Style techniques he only really got after his death.
Cool Sword: In Part II he wields a chokutō sword called the Kusanagi. It's shiny and can be used to conduct the Chidori.
The Corruptible: Is manipulated every which way by anyone who promises him power.
Costume Evolution: In Part I, Sasuke starts out wearing a blue high-collared shirt with the Uchiha emblem on the back and white shorts. During the Chunin Exams, he switches to a black one-piece outfit with short sleeves and legs; he switches back to his previous outfit prior to defecting from the Leaf Village. In Part II, the only consistent part of his wardrobe are his pants, the cloth wrapped around his waist, and his purple rope belt. He starts off wearing an open white long-sleeved shirt, switches to a grey sleeveless shirt for his battle with Itachi, and after his brother's death wears a grey high-collered short-sleeved shirt for the remainder of Part II; he briefly wore an Akatsuki robe during his battle with Killer B.
Curtains Match the Window: Black hair and eyes, as opposed to Naruto's blond and blue-eyed appearance.
Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: He was absent for most of his daughter's childhood because he wanted to protect her and the others kids of the new generation against a potentially greater threat than Kaguya.
Dangerous Forbidden Technique: The Curse Seal given to him by Orochimaru is this in Part I. Kakashi claims relying on the curse seal will end his development and he'd be forced under Orochimaru's control. Initially, Sasuke's Chidori is only supposed to be used twice. The third time he used it, he would have died if he didn't have the cursed seal which nearly took him over. Sasuke ends up being able to control the Curse Seal in Part II and it is then later removed by Itachi. He also increased his own chakra capacity to the point that he can spam Chidori without any ill effects.
Dark and Troubled Past: His entire family was slaughtered by his older brother, who later forced Sasuke to witnessed the massacre twice. Needless to say, that took away all of his innocence.
Dark Is Evil: Thanks to the Curse of Hatred, Sasuke's chakra is dark, cold, and sinister along with his personality as a cold, cruel, and ruthless individual, as well as his thirst for revenge. His Susanoo is purple in color thanks to his intense feelings of hatred and desire to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village. However…
Dark Is Not Evil: After the events of the main series and the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sasuke has now undergone a Heel–Face Turn and is now serving as a force of good for the Leaf Village to atone for his past actions.
Dark Messiah: He was going to become one. After a long period of wildly changing goals, he, concludes that there's only one thing to do to stop the endless wars: sever the past. By which he mean kill all the Kage, kill the Tailed Beasts, and kill Naruto.
Deadly Upgrade: The Mangekyou Sharingan. It grants numerous cool powers but slowly degrades the user's eyesight with each use. His Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan fixes this and restores his eyesight.
Deadpan Snarker: He was more snarky in Part 1, particularly towards Naruto or anyone he didn’t believe was at his level of competence.
Death Glare: He is prone to glaring towards everyone since very early, but nothing to write home about. The glaring with killing intent is used sparingly in Part I, such as when he's fighting the Sound Trio and when he's fighting Naruto at the hospital rooftop or at the Valley of the End, though they rise in both quality and quantity in part II where it is enough to scare Kabuto, Sai, Suigetsu or Juugo.
Deceptive Disciple: Towards Orochimaru, as post-Time Skip makes it explicitly clear that the only reason why he put up with the Sannin and did what was told is because he was willing to give him quicker means to get stronger for the sake of his revenge.
Decoy Protagonist: Not a straight example, but still a partial one during the Chunin Exams; it's obvious Naruto is the main protagonist from the word go, since his name is in the title, but a lot of characters like Neji and Gaara are built up to be rivals for Sasuke, and look down on Naruto (if they even consider him worthy of any attention). They not only end up being rivals and foils to Naruto, but in the end, Naruto is the one who defeats both of them in the Chunin Exams (and ultimately inspires their Heel Face Turns), while Sasuke is actually defeated by Gaara and never faces Neji during the arc.
Defrosting Ice King: Throughout the first several arcs thanks to his friendly rivalry with Naruto. And again post-699 to the point where Sasuke even jokes about how he 'used to be.'
Demoted to Extra: Sasuke only has a minor role in The Last.
Despair Event Horizon: He's spent a big part of his life on the verge one, but completely crossed it after Itachi died and Tobi reveals to him that Itachi had actually killed their clan because said clan was planning a coup, which would've led to a civil war and likely a world war, and since Itachi couldn't bring himself to kill his little brother he became a Stealth Mentor in the hopes that Sasuke would kill him, which would avenge their clan and make Sasuke a hero to the village. Sasuke reacts... poorly to this.
Determinator: As a part of his role as Naruto's Foil. While it's not as overstated as his rival's, Sasuke takes an insane amount of punishment in many of his battles and just keeps going. Making it even more impressive is that he doesn't have a bijuu sealed inside of him to augment his stamina. The best example of this is probably when he fights through four kages, kills Danzo, and then, while near-blind due to Mangekyo overuse, fights Kakashi to a standstill, and then still has enough energy left to clash with Naruto one last time before he leaves the battlefield. Later, during the battle against Madara, even after he is run through on his own sword, he keeps trying to get up, despite the fact that he's dying.
Deus ex Machina: Multiple:
- Sasuke pulls off a No One Could Survive That! by summoning, mind-controlling, and teleporting a massive snake when he's completely out of chakra. Said technique is difficult because of the huge amount of chakra required. He pulled this all off in the time it took for an explosion that would completely level a city to reach him. After the explosion had already started. When it started just a few feet from him. Great Snake Escape, indeed.
- During his assault on the Kage Summit, Sasuke nearly died from chakra exhaustion, having been spamming the crap out of high level jutsu with his new Mangekyo Sharingan. And then, out of nowhere, Zetsu, who had previously shown up to alert the Kages to Sasuke's presence and gotten killed for his efforts, reveals that he managed to use a time release jutsu in the split second before the Raikage snapped his neck that sucks all the chakra out of everyone in the room and gives it to Sasuke.
Deuteragonist: Sasuke is the most important person in the story bar Naruto himself, arguably to the point of being the second protagonist instead of this trope. He gets a huge amount of screentime, character development, thematic focus, and plot relevance. While he briefly drops out of the plot at the beginning of Part II, once he returns he becomes the other central focus of the story. Almost half the plot is devoted to Sasuke's journey and Face–Heel Turn, to the point where the final battle of the series isn't between Naruto and the Big Bad, but Naruto and Sasuke.
Didn't Think This Through: A common reason for his plans to fail in the second half of the series. His urge to get revenge on Itachi usurps most of his usual rationality, and once it seems like his goals might finally come to fruition, he goes right off the deep end for a while, leading to a number of utterly reckless and impulsive plans that nearly get him and his entire second team killed. Like the attempt to assassinate all of the Kages at the summit, thinking himself Kage-killer tier and taking all of them on at once — which ends up such an absurdly lopsided Curb-Stomp Battle against him that Tobi has to bail him out.
Disappeared Dad: Downplayed and Justified. It is revealed in the sequel, Naruto Gaiden, that Sasuke has not been present in Sarada's life at all, leaving when she was a baby. For the former, Sasuke knew he had a daughter and was always thinking of her and after their reunion, he is now even more involved; for the latter, he was given an important, top-secret mission that would take a long time to do.
Discard and Draw: After fighting Itachi, he loses his cursed seal, his regenerative powers, and certain other abilities from Orochimaru's remains, but acquires the Mangekyou Sharingan.
Disproportionate Retribution: Wants to kill everybody living in Konoha, even those completely unaware of what happened or not even born then, for the village elders' role in the Uchiha Massacre.
Dramatic Irony: Sasuke wanted to become Itachi's version of a Hokage, where he dutifully supported and shouldered everything from the shadows, but Itachi admitted that his Fatal Flaw was trying to do everything himself. Then again, Sasuke actually had reached a power level where he might have been able to pull it off. Eventually though, Sasuke does end up becoming Hokage from the Shadows (Co-Hokage, as Naruto puts it), with the key adjustments of him not doing everything alone and turning his back on the Curse of Hatred.
Driven by Envy: He admits this ultimately factored into his actions. Naruto and Itachi fighting and persevering as true shinobi despite the overwhelming adversity in their lives was something Sasuke admired. But likewise, he was envious because he himself never could find the strength to do the same and instead used things like hatred and revenge for motivation.
Early-Bird Cameo: Who would've thought that that one random academy student sitting behind Naruto with his arms folded in the first chapter's thirteenth page would go on to be The Rival to Naruto and help to culminate in the shinobi world's greatest epic? Kishimoto wasn't even going to include him at all until his editor made him introduce a rival for the main hero.
Easily Forgiven: Played straight by Orochimaru, Jugo, Suigetsu, and Karin. Averted by the Shinobi Army, who rationally call him out on being ridiculous in thinking he can just come back as if nothing happened. Finally, on a personal level, Sakura and Naruto are willing to forgive him and Naruto's continuing efforts to redeem him, by hook or by crook.
Enemy Mine: While it was ambiguous at first, his role in the war was ultimately this. He wasn't really on the same side as the Alliance, he just helped them because he was against the Moon's Eye Plan and needed to get Obito/Madara/Kaguya out of the way so he could start his revolution. Once they're defeated, he promptly announces his plans to kill the Kages and seals away the Tailed Beasts against their will.
Energy Absorption: He can absorb chakra using his Rinnegan's Petra Path.
Equippable Ally: Like Madara, he can use his Susanoo's perfect form as a suit of armor for Tailed Beasts.
Even Evil Has Standards: Constantly told Suigetsu not to kill innocent people and was against Orochimaru's methods, even describing them as stupid and selfish. Subverted after he goes off the deep end, and Suigetsu ends up calling him on doing the same.
Even the Guys Want Him: Udon was shown making googly eyes at Sasuke after he saved them from Kankuro.
Everyone Has Standards: Despite not liking Naruto himself, in chapter 3, he's absolutely furious at Sakura when she mocks him for being an orphan, claiming he's such a Bratty Half-Pint because he has no parents to teach him how to behave... and seemingly forgetting that Sasuke himself is an orphan after his older brother slaughtered their parents and entire clan. Sasuke immediately tells her off for it, telling her she has no idea what she's talking about; this triggers Sakura's first Jerkass Realization.
Evil Counterpart: He is one to Naruto for most of the series. Both of them lost their parents and grew up alone, the differences balance the similarities: Naruto was a noisy outcast and was disliked and mocked by the village (mainly due to having the Demon Fox inside him). Sasuke was adored and given sympathy from the village for losing his clan, but he was an arrogant loner. Ultimately, Naruto saved the village and won their respect and care. Sasuke on the other hand, did his best to destroy the village to try to avenge his brother and clan (despite Itachi wanting the opposite). Naruto started off as an embarrassing trouble maker and then became the greatest Hokage in ages, while Sasuke was a prodigy adored by almost everybody around him and then became one of the greatest threats and disappointments for the Village.
Evil Former Friend: To Naruto and Sakura, at least before his Heel–Face Turn in the finale.
Evil Hero: For the majority of Part II until his genuine Heel–Face Turn in the hands of Naruto.
Evil Is Easy: This was basically his reason for his Face–Heel Turn: he felt that if he stayed in Konoha with his teammates he wouldn't get strong enough to defeat Itachi (adding to the fact that Naruto seemed to be catching up to him).
Evil Versus Oblivion: His motivation in the final arc. It's not that he saw the light about how vile and selfish his decisions had been- he hadn't- but he concluded he needed to take over the world rather than kill everyone indiscriminately and make himself a target for the world's anger, and he can't do that if everyone will be trapped in Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Exotic Eye Designs: His Sharingan, with turns his iris red and adds three tomoe (which kinda look like commas); his Mangekyo Sharingan, which turns his iris black on the outside and red on the inside, with three overlapping ellipses; his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan which adds three spikes onto his base Mangekyo design; and Rinnegan, which turns his entire eye purplish-gray and adds a series of concentric rings, with six tomoe.
Expository Hairstyle Change: Sasuke starts out with his bangs parted from the middle during Part I and halfway through Part II. After he learns the truth about his brother Itachi and loses his mind over it, his bangs fall down and cover his forehead for the rest of Part II. Sasuke later takes on a hairstyle with bangs in his adult years, covering his Rinnegan with his hair.
Eye Scream: In Boruto, the Momoshiki-possessed Boruto stabs Sasuke's Rinnegan with a kunai.

F-I

Face–Heel Turn: Defects from Konoha to join Orochimaru after Itachi Mind Rapes him a second time, going so far as to try to kill Naruto to gain his Mangekyo Sharingan. He remained an antagonistic character up to the point where he learned the true truth behind the Curse of the Uchiha and Madara Uchiha's vendetta.
Facial Markings: Whenever he releases the Curse Seal. In its first stage black flame-like markings spread across his face, and in its second stage a black four-pointed star forms over his nose.
Fallen Hero: One of the most infamous examples ever in manga. He started off as a (given definition of) hero, then turned evil in the pursuit of Itachi because it's easier to gain power if you're evil.
Fatal Flaw:
- Sasuke's need for vengeance has caused him to abandon his friends, home, and be called a missing-nin.
- Envy is another one. He always felt envious towards Itachi and Naruto for their strength and ability, which drove Sasuke to turn to villainy for the sake of surpassing them. Ultimately, Sasuke realizing, and admitting, that many of his problems were caused by his envy is what allows Sasuke to finally make a genuine Heel–Face Turn.
Fight Magnet: He spends a lot of time seeking them out, but they come to him just as often. Case in point, Deidara jumping him because by defeating Orochimaru, he basically stole his kill.^note
Final Boss: With Obito and Madara dead, and Kaguya sealed away for good, Sasuke makes his intentions known to kill the 5 Kage and Take Over the World, setting himself up as the final antagonist of the main series, and engaging in an epic Final Battle with Naruto to decide the fate of the Shinobi World.
Final-Exam Boss: Much like Kaguya, Sasuke became this for Naruto. Naruto needed his newfound Asura abilities, Kurama's full strength, Sage Mode, his Uzumaki Barrage, Shadow Clones, and even his basic Version 1 Chakra shroud to take Sasuke on, and it ultimately breaks down to a simple fist fight when their arsenals are exhausted.
Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic: Introvert, analytical, realistic and insightful.
Foregone Conclusion: Considering that he is slated to appear in The Last Movie, his survival to the end of the story is functionally guaranteed.
Freak Out: Happens thrice.
- First after the slaughtering of his clan and he gets Mind Raped by Itachi: the sweet and shy little kid becomes obsessed with revenge.
- Second after he meets again Itachi, is beaten to a pulp and Mind Raped again: it leads to his Face–Heel Turn.
- Third one is delayed: after he learns the truth about Itachi, he Jumps Off The Slippery Slope, but it's only after he kills Danzo that he spectacularly freaks out. The result is not pretty. At all. Lucklily, he's backpedaled after a run-in with Itachi as an Impure Resurrection, but he's still on the fence about his desire for vengeance. After a talk with Hashirama he makes up his mind and decides to help end the war and become Hokage, although his definition of the term is not the same as Naruto's.
Freudian Excuse: Sasuke's descent into villany and insanity is due to a whole lot of crap thrown his way. At the age of eight, he saw his beloved older brother, his hero, slaughter their own clan for what he was told, "because he could." Then, he was forced to relieve the massacre in a Genjutsu for seventy-two hours. This turned him from a happy and stable child into the broody anti-hero we see at the beginning. Despite this, he slowly starts to recover thanks to his teamwork and friendships. However, the curse mark given by Orochimaru began serving as a sinister symbol of temptation, especially since recent events had him try to accelerate his growth. Then, Itachi reappears and proceeds to utterly trash him and make him through the nightmarish experience again. Beyond undoing all the healing he's done, it also destroyed his sense of self-worth and heavily damaged his sanity, especially with his fears of not being strong enough. This along with the Curse Seal led him down the dark path to becoming Orochimaru's student. When he returns in Shippudden, he's colder and more stoic and has put everything to beat Itachi. When he finally does, he's left hallow... and then when Tobi reveals the truth about the Uchiha Massacre, Sasuke's world is pretty much shattered, having him undergo a complete breakdown and wanting to lash out at everything. He slowly gets to grips with himself, but still tries to adhere to his brother's failed ideals until Naruto finally brings him back from the brink.
Friendless Background: Not that he cares being a recluse. Sasuke was a loner who forsook relationships with others and chose solitude in his pursuit for power. Naruto caught him just sitting by a lake by himself once when they were students and discounting his wife Sakura and mentor Kakashi, Naruto seems to be his closest and only friend (he mostly saw Hebi as tools to reach his objective). He also travels the world by himself as a vagabond to repent for his sins.
The Friend Nobody Likes: After he teams up with the protagonists later into the series, he quickly establishes himself as being tolerated only due to their needing his assistance.
Fuuma Shuriken: Sasuke is very fond of them using many trick throws by attaching them to wires as well as one that is rigged to split apart and fire.
Generation Xerox: Zig Zagged. For a while, Sasuke was similar to Orochimaru, but now that he isn't following the path of his teacher, his life seems to be headed a direction similar to several of his ancestors. It was explicitly called the curse of the Uchiha. Then Kakashi brings back the comparison with Orochimaru, if only for the teacher versus student parallel.
Genghis Gambit: His ultimate goal. He'll direct all the world's hatred onto himself and live in the shadows, after he's erased the mistakes of the past (the current Kages and the Tailed Beasts).
Genocide Backfire: His goal is to kill Itachi for slaughtering their clan. It was revealed Itachi did so to stop a potential civil or world war. After he "succeeds" in killing Itachi, he wanted to kill every Konoha citizen for what his brother had to do.
Genocide Survivor: While Sasuke has a complicated relationship with his Last of His Kind status, one thing that remained consistent is he indeed survived a systematic killing of his clan.
"Get Out of Jail Free" Card: While he does go through a Heel–Face Turn, Sasuke still did such things as abandon the Leaf to seek power from Orochimaru (a wanted criminal), try to kill his closest friend Naruto numerous times, attempt to kidnap a Shinobi of Kumogakure (and inadvertently providing ingredients to end the world via Infinite Tsukuyomi), and attack the Kage summit and the Gokage, with it being noted in-universe that he's built up a rap sheet severe enough to land him in prison for life. He's ultimately pardoned of his crimes by Kakashi, the Sixth Hokage.
The Gift: Even among the Uchiha, the most talented and elite shinobi of the entire world admit he's a genius with potential beyond theirs. Even the resurrected Second Hokage states that Sasuke is as prodigious as Madara. Orochimaru also confidently states that Sasuke's power has yet to reach its peak and that he would eventually surpass Madara himself.
Godhood Seeker: When Naruto asks Sasuke what will happen to his vision of Hokage when he dies, Sasuke states that he plans to become immortal and seals all nine Tailed Beasts into his Susanoo.
Go Mad from the Revelation: He reacted poorly to learning that his brother loved him above all else and self-sacrificed. And that it was by order of Konoha that the Uchiha were killed.
Good is Not Nice: Started out as this status, before he underwent his Face–Heel Turn. That said, he returns to this after his Heel–Face Turn.
Graceful Loser: Admits defeat to Naruto, regarding their battle over ideals. The Will of Fire won over the Curse of Hatred.
Sasuke: I'll admit it. I... lost.
Guile Hero: Sasuke showed characteristics of this type, when he was still a member of the Hidden Leaf. An example was the Chuunin Exam in the Forest of Death: He noticed shadow clones with ease, mostly because he analyzed the behaviour of his teammates.
Handicapped Badass: Loses his left arm in his fight with Naruto. The epilogue and Seventh Hokage Gaiden show that he doesn't get a prosthesis from Hashirama's cells, but is nevertheless a very capable fighter. He can even do hand seals with one hand.
Handsome Lech: In the Road To Ninja movie. His AU counterpart isn't plagued by a horrid clan massacre, so he developed into a more normal sense of a teenage male — a flirtatious dude.
Handwraps of Awesome: Sasuke has these for a short time in the Chunin Exam arc.
Happily Married: As the final pages of Naruto Gaiden show, he and Sakura ultimately have a solid marriage.
Haughty "Hmph": He uses the smug variety of this trope so much it borders on a Verbal Tic, especially earlier on in the series.
Hazy-Feel Turn: When he joined the Shinobi Alliance to fight against Madara and stop his Eye of the Moon plan; after that's done, he's got his own plans.
Heartbroken Badass:
- His family's death in his backstory filled the cheerful little boy with hatred and made him obsessed with revenge.
- The revelation that his brother was not the murderous scum he believed him to be and that his revenge was ultimately meaningless hit him very hard. He channeled that pain against the Hidden Leaf, vowing to destroy it.
Heartwarming Orphan: Zigzagged. The whole story behind Sasuke being an orphan is heart-aching, but his tendency to get revenge at the cost of himself and his newly made bonds is hard to watch.
Heel–Face Revolving Door: Pretty much one of the bases of his characterization. He is the yoyo of Naruto's morality world. Started out good, then turned evil (joining Orochimaru), then became good (going after Itachi), then turned evil again (joined Akatsuki), then became good again sort of (fought Obito, Madara and Kaguya), then turned evil again (Genghis Gambit), then finally settled on good.
Heel–Face Turn: It took Naruto kicking his ass to do this, for real this time.
Heel Realization: Of sorts. After talking with the reanimated Itachi, he starts questioning his decision to destroy the Leaf, wondering why was his brother willing to live and die as a traitor to protect the Hidden Leaf. A talk-turned-therapy-session with the First Hokage helps him understand the importance of the village, leading to his joining the battle against Madara.
Heir to the Dojo: Sasuke is treated like this by pretty much everyone in Part I.
Hellfire: With his left Mangekyō eye he can cast Amaterasu, igniting whatever he looked at with inextinguishable black flames that would burn anything. With his right Mangekyō eye, he can use Kagutsuchi to shape his Amaterasu flames into a variety of forms for offensive or defensive purposes. This ability to manipulate his Amaterasu makes him more skilled than Itachi was with his own Amaterasu.
Heroes Prefer Swords: Sasuke adds a sword to his moveset in Part II, but he is very ambiguously heroic by that point. Post-Part II, he becomes a hero for good.
Heroic BSoD: When Tobi starts telling him the truth about Itachi, Sasuke hyperventilates at the mere thought that the masked man's outrageous claims could be true. When he wakes up (bound so that he wouldn't try to leave), Tobi tells him the full story, leaving Sasuke an emotional wreck.
Tobi: Think back carefully and remember Itachi, your kind and gentle older brother.
[Sasuke starts breathing in quick, heavy gasps]
Sasuke: No, it's impossible! No, he didn't want to protect me! He just tried to kill me! He tried to steal my eyes! [coughs]
Tobi: Calm down. Breathe slowly.
Sasuke: DON'T TOUCH ME! [passes out]

[as Tobi is explaining the various measures Itachi took to protect Sasuke]
Tobi: [...] He wanted to make sure—
Sasuke: STOP IT! MORE LIES! EVERYTHING YOU SAY IS A LIE!
Tobi: You're still alive, aren't you?
[Sasuke goes wide-eyed from the shock]
The Hero's Journey: Sasuke follows it quite nicely. Unsurprising since he's the deuteragonist of the series.
He Who Fights Monsters: Sasuke becomes the embodiment of what he loathed all his life: a being that imposes his will onto the world regardless of morality or the desires of those around him.
Hidden Depths: There has grown a split in the fan base as whether Sasuke's Face–Heel Turn was: 1) a form of him reaching terrible heights of despair and anger from a cross of Despair Event Horizon and Unstoppable Rage upon discovering the knowledge that all he had been brought up to believe was a betrayal and devastated by Itachi's revelation and subsequent traumatic and heart-rending death; or 2) that his entire Dark Side turn was just him being a spoilt whiny brat when other people who have had far worse childhoods than him (and far more reason to hate their home village than him (considering how his clan had been trying to mutiny, and after the slaughter he was still adored and praised by everyone around him)) have died fighting against the side he is now working for. Each Alternate Character Interpretation spring from the interpretation of his Hidden Depths.
High Collar of Doom: It runs in the clan.
Hoist by His Own Petard: Madara fatally injures him with his own sword, though he's given a transfusion of Senju cells by Kabuto, healing him and letting him awaken his Rinnegan.
Horrible Judge of Character: Zig-Zagged. At first, he doesn't buy anything Tobi says, considering it complete and utter nonsense. After hearing the entire story, he believes him enough to vow revenge on the Hidden Leaf; nevertheless, he still questions Danzo about Itachi, if only to hear one of the masterminds admit his guilt. When Danzo confirms everything, Sasuke stops caring about Tobi's involvement in the Uchiha clan's massacre and the Nine Tails incident that led to it.
Hypnotic Eyes: Sasuke's Sharingan can cast potent genjutsu that become even stronger as his eyes progress, though his is not as powerful as Itachi's Tsukuyomi as he can't control the victim's perception of time. Or at least, not by more than a second or so. Regardless, it still serves as a good distraction and when timed perfectly was good enough to counter Danzo's use of Izanagi in the heat of battle. Other usages include interrogation, knocking targets out, or placing them under his control.
I Am Who?: He is the reincarnation of the oldest son of the Sage of Six Paths.
If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: An odd example of this being showed and played out without ever saying it too directly. Each time Sasuke killed someone, he ended up doing actions similar to the ones he despised and/or suffered from.
- He calls Orochimaru out for his Motive Decay as he is killing him, only to gradually suffer Motive Decay himself as he goes mad with power and hatred.
- To kill Danzo, who used Itachi and cast him aside and orchestrated the Uchiha genocide to advance his ambitions, Sasuke casually used and cast aside his allies of Taka and made plans for the genocide of Konoha to advance his plans of revenge.
- He killed Itachi, who ended up having good intentions but did far more harm than good trying to make himself a figure of hatred for Sasuke, and ended up intending to make himself a figure of hatred for the whole world in a way Naruto pointed out would only make things worse.
- He helped defeat Black Zetsu, who had previously orchestrated all the conflicts in the world, and planned to use the same methods to make himself a target.
If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: Subverted. When Sakura approaches him claiming to want to join him, Sasuke tells her to prove her loyalty by killing his teammate Karin (who had outlived her usefulness as far as he was concerned). Before she can prove herself one way or the other, he tries to stab her in the back.
Ignorant of Their Own Ignorance: When Sasuke and Gaara first meet in Shippuden during the Kage summit, Gaara tries to sympathize with Sasuke, only for Sasuke to refute that Gaara could never understand his pain. Apparently, he never learned (or simply refuses to acknowledge) that Gaara has also suffered greatly: Lost his mom when he was born, had a monster sealed him that resulted in him being isolated and hated by his village and stopped him from sleeping, any attempts at kindness shut down, the one person who he thought loved him tried to kill him and gave him a Dying Declaration of Hate and told him he was never loved, had many attempts on his life orchestrated by his father, and ultimately died once. Sure Sasuke, Gaara would never understand any pain you're in.
I Hate Past Me: When he time-travels back to his genin days in Boruto, he's completely ashamed of his past self's attitude.
Immortality Seeker: Briefly during his final fight with Naruto. He declares himself to become a Shadow Dictator till the ends of time so that the world will be too busy fighting him instead of each other, and states he planned to somehow achieve it to see it to fruition.
Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: One of his most-utilized ways of trying to one-hit-kill an opponent is impaling them with Chidori or one of its variations, though it has yet to actually kill one of its targets. He was on the receiving end of this when Killer Bee impales him with six swords at once. Later, Madara also does it to him, this time with his own sword.
Improbable Hairstyle: Until the end of the series, Sasuke's main hairstyle was his hair being spiky in the back.
Incendiary Exponent: He does one with the Amaterasu, creating a Ring of Fire for protection.
Inconsistent Coloring: When his Rinnegan was first portrayed on colored pages, it was red. On the cover of Chapter 686, it's light purple,with the former being explained as a mistake that was later corrected.
Ineffectual Loner: Initially, as he was keen on not relying on others but kept slipping up and getting his butt kicked.
Inferiority Superiority Complex: Kishimoto (as Kakashi) lampshaded this himself. Sasuke will never admit someone is his better, but will obsess if he thinks someone is. Sasuke had an absolutely massive one towards Itachi, but Itachi's massacre of their clan and Sasuke's torture at his hands made it a complete (if somewhat understandable) obsession. Itachi torturing him again made it worse. He also developed one towards Naruto over the course of Part I, refusing to believe Naruto could ever be stronger than him but driving himself crazy thinking he already was, which eventually lead to his Face–Heel Turn.
In Love with Your Carnage: In Chapter 632, He flashes a proud and flirty smirk when Sakura shows off her upgraded Super-Strength (courtesy of her Yin Seal) by smashing the ground so hard it created a new crater, killing multiple clones of the Ten-Tails in the process. Bonus points because: a) everyone is shocked when they first see the normal Cherry Blossom Impact and b) Naruto, who's standing right next to him, looks absolutely terrified of her.
Insane Troll Logic: What his Zero-Approval Gambit is. He claims he is going force the world to unite against him to bring peace. However, to accomplish this he has to put the world into a perpetual state of war against him that would only last as long as he continued to perpetuate the hatred itself, to wit the plan involved killing all the current kage, using the tailed beasts' power as his own, and killing the person who has the most faith in him, all because he sees the current way shinobi works as flawed. Naruto calls him out on this.
Instant Armor: Having awakened the Mangekyō in both his eyes, Sasuke can use Susanoo, a spectral warrior that protects him and acts on his behalf depicted as a purple color. Initially, Sasuke can only create Susanoo's skeletal features, such as ribs for defence or arms to interact with his surroundings. He is steadily able to layer musculature and skin over the bones, and later armour to increase its defences. Due to Sasuke's right Mangekyō eye, he can use Kagutsuchi to shape his Amaterasu flames into a variety of usage with his Susanoo such as adding flames to the Susanoo's skeletal version or use a Flaming Sword. Its primary weapon is a bow, manifested on the wrist of its left arm; the bow can also double as a shield. Arrows are drawn from an orb held by its primary right hand and can be fired very quickly. The arrow's properties can be augmented with Amaterasu's flames in its armoured form. Upon receiving the Rinnegan, he is able to create the significantly larger "Complete Body" Susanoo, similar to Madara's in appearance and comparable in power to Naruto's Tailed Beast Mode. This Susanoo can use lightning release jutsu such as Chidori and Sasuke's strongest attack, Indra's Arrow.
Insufferable Genius: Sasuke showed some signs of this, but usually got knocked down a peg before he could get too conceited. And then, he got much, much worse.
Insult of Endearment:
- Before defecting to Orochimaru, he rarely addressed Naruto by his name; instead, he called him "usuratonkachi" ("loser" in the dub). It started as an insult but halfway through the Land of Waves arc it's his way of saying "buddy". He uses it once again after more than three years in the aftermath of his battle with Naruto. He never was any good at apologizing...
- By Boruto: Naruto the Movie, it's arguably not even an insult, and more like the greatest compliment ever, seeing as Sasuke says to Boruto, that he might even be a bigger moron than his father. When asked what that means, he says, 'someone who refuses to lose.'
Irony: Though Sasuke claims to want to destroy Konoha, almost every action he has taken during the course of the story has worked to the Village's benefit.
It's All About Me:
- Even if his motive is to honor his dead clan, his actions are increasingly self-centered. The problem begins when he chooses to ditch Konoha to learn under the criminal who attempted to destroy it, showing no regard for his classmates who risked their lives trying to bring him back, and wanting to kill Naruto because he considered acquiring the Mangekyo Sharingan more important than Naruto's life (which probably wouldn't have have worked, as the process requires a My God, What Have I Done? moment to awaken the eyes, and Sasuke clearly didn't care enough about Naruto for this to happen). It gets worse after learning the truth about Itachi. He kidnaps (what he thinks is) Killer Bee, dooming a man he barely knows to a slow and painful death just so he can have the Tailed Beast inside him to use against Konoha. During the Kage Summit, he thinks of nothing but revenge against Danzo, killing or attempting to kill all the Samurai, Kage and their bodyguards who get in his way, ditching two teammates when saving them becomes inconvenient, and stabbing through the remaining one (after she'd healed his life-threatening injuries twice during the arc) when saving her becomes inconvenient as well. Finally, his plan to kill everyone in Konoha for the Uchiha Clan massacre that only a select few are responsible for is best described as forcing his suffering onto everyone else.
- Reaches a head by the War arc. He decides to follow Itachi's footsteps and protect Konoha. His method of doing so is to kill the current Kage and use the tailed beasts to start a revolution which he believes will save the world by doing away with the old system. And no matter what the others will think because he knows better what is best for the world and how to make this world a better place.
- Another highlight of this is a lot of the reasoning for most of Sasuke's Chronic Backstabbing Disorder comes from "if I stay loyal to this person, I do not benefit from it", and then promptly abandons or attempts to kill his former ally soon after.

J-N

Jerkass Has a Point:
- He gets this from time to time in Part I. When Sakura complains about Naruto and says that he is a Bratty Half-Pint because he has no parents (which definitely strikes a nerve for Sasuke), Sasuke tells Sakura that she has no idea what Naruto went through, and after he leaves, she decides to start being nicer to Naruto. Shortly before the Chunin Exams, he tells her that in terms of skill, even weaker than Naruto is, which makes her reassess her own development as a ninja. During the Forest of Death, when Naruto and Sasuke are incapacitated, Sakura realizes that despite thinking herself superior to Naruto, she can't do anything when it counts, and goes through Character Development as a result.
- He points out that the five ninja villages only united because of a greater threat, to justify his far more extreme plan for world peace—killing the Five Kages and using the Sage's powers to unite the world against him.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
- Back before his Face–Heel Turn, he was this. Though he presented a cold façade, he grew to care about Naruto and Sakura, openly risking his life for theirs and coming to consider them his True Companions before he let his desire to grow stronger overcome him.
- He reverts back to this after his Heel–Face Turn. Underneath his cold attitude, Sasuke genuinely cares for his comrades and espectially his family.
Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: At least before his final Heel–Face Turn after losing to Naruto. Despite wanting to be Hokage, he refused the idea that his clan might be to blame for its trouble, instead projecting it onto the system itself, though he wasn't necessarily wrong, based on what was shown in Hashirama's flashback. Not only that, he's outwardly dismissive of everyone around him, even Naruto, Kakashi, and Sakura who saved his life multiple times, and tried to kill them without remorse or hesitation, often while vocally dismissing them as well.
Katanas Are Just Better: Sasuke's main weapon post-Time Skip is a chokuto, a sword resembling a straight-bladed katana.
Karma Houdini: Despite abandoning the Leaf to seek power from Orochimaru (a wanted criminal), trying to kill his closest friend Naruto numerous times, attempting to kidnap a Shinobi of Kumogakure (and inadvertently providing ingredients to end the world via Infinite Tsukuyomi), attacking the Kage summit and the Gokage. The list of criminal actions that committed are even counted as credible to put him away for life. However, all of Sasuke's crimes are expunged and Kakashi as sixth Hokage grants him a pardon. The anime rectified this a bit. While he was still pardoned thanks to the above, he spent some time in prison before Naruto and Kakashi plead his case.
- Even so, A quite frankly told him that while the rest of the Kage respected Kakashi's pardon, he would still have to earn forgiveness, the hard way.
- In Shippuden episode 485, Orochimaru claims that the reason why he, Sasuke, and Kabuto were got off essentially scott-free is because their abilities are very valuable in the event the shinobi world is facing a dangerous threat.
Keeping the Handicap: He loses his left arm during his Final Battle with Naruto, but unlike Naruto, he opts not to get a replacement.
Kick the Dog: His decision to abandon Suigetsu and Jugo at the Kage summit, as well as nearly killing Karin for the sake of getting his revenge, was both cruel and served to show how utterly self-serving Sasuke became as a result of letting his hatred consume him.
Killing Intent: In Part II, thanks to Orochimaru. It's so strong, it's enough to frighten Ax Crazies Juugo and Suigetsu.
Kirin: Kirin is the name of a jutsu in which he summons natural lightning and shapes it into a giant kirin before crashing it down to the ground.
The Lancer: To Kakashi's Leader role being trained more closely than Sakura or Naruto and taking up the leadership position during the Chuunin exams. Also to Naruto's Hero role as his primary foil throughout Part I.
Laser-Guided Karma: Sasuke spent the better part of the manga cutting off bonds with his former friends and stabbing his allies in the back all for the sake of power and revenge. It ultimately leaves him dying alone in the battlefield after being stabbed in the heart and discarded by Madara who cut off his bonds with and betrayed everyone for the sake of accomplishing his plan. To make it painfully clear, his panels are put side to side with Naruto who is also dying but has his two closest friends Gaara and Sakura trying to save his life. He got bailed out by Kabuto, who was motivated to heal him after seeing Itachi's strong feelings for Sasuke, and Hagoromo, who also helped Naruto.
Last of His Kind: Subverted. He is called this, but his brother was still alive at the time, only disowned. Not long after Itachi's death, it's revealed there is another Uchiha still alive, and well hidden. And then Itachi and Madara are resurrected. He truly is the last once every other Uchiha is well and truly killed.... until years later when he has had a daughter with Sakura. Even then, this means that he is the last full-blooded Uchiha left alive.
Laughing Mad: Twice, the first time after achieving his Cursed Seal Level 2 form, and the second time after Kakashi asks him to give up on his quest for revenge.
The Leader: In the absence of Kakashi during Part I, particularly the Chunin Exams. He also serves as a fairly effective one to Team Taka through most of Part II. He assumes leadership again much later when it's Team 7 vs. the world under the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Despite Naruto's objections and the fact that he puts it in the rudest possible manner, Kakashi concedes that Sasuke is the best choice for leader since his Rinnegan is the key to stopping the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Leader Wannabe: Following his Heel–Face Turn, he declares that he intends to become Hokage. The others call him out on how ridiculous this sounds, but he doesn't care. His takeover of Team 7 when Infinite Tsukuyomi hits isn't exactly full of tact, either, but Kakashi says they should go with it since Sasuke's the only one who knows what's going on. However, even then, most of his strategies end up failing, and the protagonists only end up defeating Kaguya when Kakashi takes charge once more. Justified once Sasuke's definition of "Hokage" is revealed; there's very little actual leading on his part.
Leeroy Jenkins: Has taken to this trope since getting the Mangekyo Sharingan, which results in him losing his eyesight very soon after gaining the powerup from reckless use. He gets better by the Fourth Shinobi World War, since he's been holding on to the Sanity Ball, but he still has his moments.
Leitmotif: A slow, acoustic guitar music titled "Wandering" (漂泊, Hyōhaku) is played.
Living MacGuffin: Between Naruto, Orochimaru, Kabuto, Tobi, and all his fangirls, everyone seems to want some part of Sasuke. Even Pain shows interest towards him once or twice (even if they never meet).
Loners Are Freaks: Sure, he started off being a relatively cool guy, even if he was a bit of an aloof jerk, but this trait eventually turned him into a borderline sociopath.
Loner-Turned-Friend: For a time, he started to open himself to the others before Itachi's beatdown and second torture session caused him to go nuts.
Love Makes You Evil: According to Tobirama, like with many other Uchiha, this is the reason why Sasuke went so completely off the deep end. Not because he is incapable of loving someone, but because when he loves, he loves so deeply and fundamentally that when that love is lost, it ultimately destroys him, which was exactly happened with Itachi.
Magical Eye: The Sharingan and then later the Mangenkyou Sharingan, and then finally the Eternal Magenkyou Sharingan after implanting Itachi's Mangenkyou. After receiving half of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki's chakra, Sasuke's left Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan made way for the Rinnegan.
Magic Knight: Starting in Shippuden, Sasuke not only continues to use ninjutsu, particularly fire and lightning, but also is a practicing swordsman.
Master Swordsman: Is extremely skilled with his chokuto. He managed to block Mifune's iaijitsu which killed Hanzo during the zombie arc of the Shinobi War.
Mega Manning: Averted save for one instance. The Sharingan can copy almost any jutsu except the Blood Limits, but Sasuke has only ever been shown to copy one thing this way: a bit of Rock Lee's Taijutsu that he couldn't properly utilize anyway.
Me's a Crowd: He demonstrates to Boruto that he's able to perform Naruto's signature Shadow Clone jutsu, just to prove a point.
Mind Rape: Immediately after the Uchiha Massacre, Sasuke was subjected to this by Itachi, forcing him to relive their parents' murder again and again for days on end. Then he suffered again by Itachi's 5 and three years later.
Minor Living Alone: Justified given how his entire clan was slaughtered and the other member, his older brother, was the cause of it.
Mirror Character:
- Despite being introduced as the prodigy while Naruto was the loser, the two of them were not all that dissimilar. They were both orphans, "lonely kids starved for love who found nothing but hatred". However, they chose different paths: Sasuke let his hatred consume him while Naruto learned to let it go and moved past it.
- Gaara, back when he was still in his Ax-Crazy phase, told him that they were very much alike: they both had the same eyes, filled with hatred and the desire to kill the ones who made them so lonely. During the Five Kage Summit arc, he reminds that to Sasuke and tries and convince to abandon his quest for vengeance. It doesn't work.
- After Kaguya is defeated, he proves this with respect to Danzo, with his willingness to kill the Kages to establish a peaceful life for ninjas everywhere.
Misplaced Retribution: His plan to kill everyone in the Leaf because they're all happy and safe thanks to Itachi's actions.
Momma's Boy: Sasuke was very close to his mother before she died. Flashbacks that out of both his parents, Sasuke was closer to her than his father.
Moral Luck: The thing that shifts Sasuke on the rogue ninja scale from someone taking a long and unauthorized leave of absence to an internationally wanted fugitive is his abduction of Killer Bee. This infuriated the Raikage and left the Leaf ninja believing they needed to kill Sasuke themselves to prevent international relations from further deteriorating. When it's revealed that Sasuke didn't actually kidnap Killer Bee, this notion gets dropped despite the fact that Sasuke had fully intended to kidnap and ultimately kill Bee and simply failed to do so.
Moral Myopia: Played With. His revenge was originally justified and understandable. When the truth of Itachi being a double agent was revealed, then he comes across as spiteful, but for valid reasons. After meeting the Hokages, he's come to the conclusion that it's the system which is the problem, not the actions of himself or his kin. Given what's been shown, he's actually not wrong, seeing that most of the problems that the Uchiha had seem to have been caused by the system Tobirama set up and Madara's reaction to it. Even Minato seems to implicitly agree with Sasuke's view, stating that perhaps the massacre could have been averted had he been alive to enact systemic change. Thus, it seems Sasuke has a point, though his intentions do become extreme, and perhaps he is condemned too soon.
Moral Pragmatist: In very late chapters, he pulls a Big Damn Heroes moment and decides to enter the Fourth Shinobi World War to protect his Konoha. He also states that he want to become the Hokage, his village's head ninja. His reasoning, however, is that this is simply the best way to prevent the screw-ups done by previous Hokages from happening again. (Although, his idea of what a "Hokage" should be still borders on Necessarily Evil.)
Motive Decay: Sasuke's goals switch from "Kill people who were responsible for my childhood trauma" to "Kill everyone who lives in the same area as the people who caused my trauma", all because a man in a mask told him so, while said man also wasn't denying his own hand in causing said trauma. At least he had the decency to seek out and demand the truth of the matter from one of the supposed masterminds the man in the mask mentioned (and confirming it) before going full-blown revenge mode, while conveintly choosing not to target one of the other men (Tobi) who had a hand in the slaughter.
Mr. Fanservice: Again, not that he cares.
Mutual Kill: Barely averted during the Kage summit invasion. The fourth Raikage could have killed Sasuke with his Liger Bomb, but at the same time, would have either burned to death from Amaterasu or bleed out from amputating his limbs. Gaara prevents the scenario entirely.
My God, What Have I Done?: Thrice:
- After learning the truth about Itachi, he later cries, due to him realizing he killed the last of his own family for no reason.
- When seeing Naruto's memories, he can only avert his eyes in shame, seeing how he alienated everyone in an attempt to fulfill his selfish goals.
- In Naruto Gaiden when he realizes that he pulled a sword on his daughter.
My Greatest Failure: As an adult he isn't proud of his past actions of defecting Konoha and abandoning his friends. He admits to Boruto when the latter confronts him about his past that he had lost his way back then.
Named After Somebody Famous:
- "Sasuke" comes from famous folktale ninja Sarutobi Sasuke. It's also the name of the Third Hokage's father, who Mikoto named him after.
- His Cool Sword, "Kusanagi", is not the only Kusanagi, nor is it the original. It was named after the sword of Orochimaru.
Navel-Deep Neckline: A rare male example. His first outfit in Part II had a long-sleeved white shirt open all the way to the blue cloth tied around his waist, exposing almost half his torso. It actually serves a purpose besides fanservice, as it allows him to quickly remove the shirt when he uses the Curse Seal so that the wings won't tear it apart. When Itachi removes this ability, Sasuke reverts to more standard clothing, although he somewhat leaves the zipper more open than it's strictly necessary. The only instance where he fully zips up his shirt (thereby subverting this trope) is after acquiring the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan but before being fatally stabbed by Madara and gaining the Rinnegan.
Necessarily Evil: During his final confrontation with Naruto, Sasuke explains his plan to confront the evils of the Shinobi system, which basically amounts to making himself so hated that everyone stops fighting each other to fight him.
The Needs of the Many: He bluntly tells Naruto that Kaguya is a hair's breadth from assimilating all humanity and only they can stop her, so they can't afford to worry about Sakura and Kakashi. Naruto admits he's got a point, but also reminds Sasuke of what he did on the bridge.
Never Be Hurt Again: Sasuke's motivation for wanting to be Hokage is to reform the ninja systems that caused him so much pain to his clan, and Itachi. Ironically, his idea of being Hokage is to make himself Public Enemy #1, willingly throwing himself back into the same loneliness that he suffered from the Uchiha clan massacre.
Never My Fault: Sasuke will never accept that his clan is to blame for its own problems, always projecting it onto others regardless of their own personal responsibility. After learning that they were staging a coup, he blames the village for it. Partially subverted as we learn through Tobirama that the isolation of the Uchihas contributed to their festering resentment (said isolation was from something he implemented) and from Hiruzen that he should have made more of an effort to find a peaceful solution instead of allowing genocide to happen on his watch. Infallible, Konoha was not. But even after that Sasuke continues to think that his clan completely full innocent and decides to project guilt onto the ninja systems to start his revolution.
New Powers as the Plot Demands: His Hawk Summoning Contract, which he didn't have at the time he left Konoha and is unlikely to have obtained from Orochimaru. Tobi even wonders where he found the time to acquire it.
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Saved Karin from Killer Bee, which allowed the latter to escape. If he hadn't done this, it's likely his side would've already won the War. Though, in the long run, it would've been bad for Sasuke too, as he changed sides later on.
Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Itachi's death just makes things even more complicated for Sasuke.
No Man Should Have This Power: With the world now safe from Madara and Kaguya, he makes it clear that after killing Naruto and the Kages, he'll use the Tailed-Beasts' powers to dispel the Infinite Tsukuyomi, and then promptly seal or destroy them afterward to fully eliminate them. Whether they were benign or not doesn't matter: people can and have used them as weapons throughout history, and so long as they exist, will continue to do so, so he's going to make sure that no one can use their powers again. Then he goes and draws their power into himself.
"No More Holding Back" Speech: Sasuke delivers two epic ones back to back in 698 and 699:
Sasuke: "Naruto...I knew that in the past you were always alone. Like me, the last Uchiha, you were cast out. You acted like an idiot to get punished on purpose, just so anyone would notice you. At first I thought you weren't worth considering at all, that you were just a weakling playing around. But after seeing you do stupid things and get punished every time, somehow, it just started to get to me. At that time, I thought that your weakness had started to sink into me too. I couldn't stop paying attention to you. When I saw you desperate to be connected to others...it would make me think of my family. And for some reason, I felt at ease. However, I also thought it was weakness. I trained hard to escape from that weakness, to become stronger than my brother, to take revenge on him... but then you ended up in the same team as me, and once again, I was facing the image of my family. After clearing missions with you, who wanted to become Hokage, I could feel clearly that we were both getting stronger...and I realized that I wanted to fight with you. I started to see team 7 somewhat like my family...and that's why when I saw you suffer, I would suffer too. When I understood your pain, for the first time I considered you my friend. But at the same time, I couldn't just let you become stronger. When I saw how strong you had become, I was the one envious of you...you had a kind of strength I was missing. You always walked in front of me, much like my brother used to...and today was no different..."
Sasuke: "Naruto...at the time I recalled those words you said here once before. How when you're with me you wonder if this is what it's like to have a brother... that feeling of yours... I think I finally get what you meant. As I travel far and wide across the world, I often reflect back on those days. We were alone and starved of love. Kids that lived in a world full of hate. We chose different paths to walk, and battled each other. But now that time has passed...It's just like how I came to feel father mother and my brother Itachi's pain and emotions...I'll now start knowing your pain and feelings too, Naruto. You never cut me off, in fact you kept trying to get closer to me. You could've justifiably come charging at me with hatred, but you never stopped calling me your friend. Even though I tried to sever those feelings myself... You stopped me, as a friend, even at the cost of your hand. And I was saved thanks to you. We were insignificant little things who used to clash, and now we're able to claim each other's pain. And after seeing the world through my travels, I believe this concept isn't just about us... I'm sure it's the same for everything else. But it's not something that can be done as easily as you were able to. I never assumed it would be simple, just like it wasn't for the two of us. Especially with something so big. It's kind of like a prayer. To keep enduring until it comes to be, no matter what. The beings that have been entrusted with hope... that's us. Perhaps that's what it means to be a ninja."
Non-Indicative Name: Despite his sword's name being called the Kusanagi no Tsurugi in Japanese, the sword itself does not resemble a tsurugi and rather looks like a chokuto.
No Social Skills: Sasuke is socially inept to a comical degree, but it's largely due to his father's emotional neglect, trauma induced by Itachi, and increasingly succumbing to the Curse of Hatred. Kakashi lampshades this in-universe when Sasuke solicits him for advice when trying to bond with his daughter.
Not a Morning Person: According to Kabuto, Sasuke is "always so grumpy when he first gets up". And he says that after Sasuke blew up his room and the surrounding area because Sai disrupted his sleep; talk about an Understatement...
Sasuke: Is that really your excuse... for waking me up? (cue explosion)
Not in This for Your Revolution: Sasuke joined the Akatsuki to get his hands on the power of a Tailed Beast, not because he shared Tobi's goals. Tobi was well aware of this, so he didn't tell Sasuke a thing about the Eye of the Moon plan and promised to hand him over to Kabuto as soon as the War was over.
Not So Above It All: At least pre-Time Skip, going as far back as the Land of Waves arc. It's subtle in the manga, but gets played up more in the anime, especially in fillers.
- He was dismissive of Naruto, calling him a loser regularly, but still asked him to relay Sakura's advice about the tree-climbing technique, much to Naruto's surprise. Immediately after that, the two of them have an impromptu eating contest, which they treat like Serious Business.
- While initially dismissive of Naruto and Sakura's plot to see what was under Kakashi's mask, Naruto is able to somewhat easily get him to join in by proposing absurd possibilities of what lay behind Kakashi's mask and Sasuke's visualizations of it show he becomes curious.
- The manga omake "The Real True Face...!!" ^noteBook of Wind or chapter 700.2 shows another one of Team 7's attempts to see Kakashi's true face; it's implied that they've tried many times without any success. This time, however, he doesn't even need the prodding, being almost as fired up as Naruto.
Not So Stoic:
- Played for Drama: Triggered by encountering: fear (first encounters with Zabuza and Orochimaru), rage (anything about the Uchiha), and so on. Probably the most poignant example, however, is how he just starts crying after he learns the truth of Itachi's motivations, especially considering how he showed almost no emotion throughout Part II before this point.
- Played for Laughs: In Boruto, he has to say he's a fan of Jiraiya's work (which mind you, caused him a lot of irritation and trouble). The expression he has is priceless.
Not Worth Killing: Itachi claims he let Sasuke live through the massacre because of this, but it's not true.

Only Sane Man: In Part 1, Sasuke was this in Team 7, being the more refined and focused one. But then he develops a Sanity Slippage after Itachi returns.
Oblivious to Love: Played with. It is not sure if Sasuke is genuinely oblivious or if he does it on purpose. He always ignored the affections of Sakura and Karin.
Oblivious Younger Sibling: Unaware of Itachi killing the Uchihas under the orders of the Hidden Leaf elders. When he found out, he didn't take it very well. Itachi later admits that things probably would have gone better had Sasuke not been so oblivious.
Odd Friendship: Short-lived though it was, the relationship between Naruto and Sasuke was one of the oddest friendships in the series. At the time, Sasuke was a quiet, moody prodigy who was ridiculously popular despite wanting to be left alone, while Naruto was a loud, obnoxious idiot who was shunned despite wanting friends more than anything else. Not to mention that they started out hating each other, their first real interaction as classmates being a fight, and they desperately wanted to fight each other before and after they became teammates. Despite all this, for a brief time in the series they had a very strong friendship marked by mutual respect and trust. This bond was, in fact, so strong that Naruto insists that Sasuke is still his best friend despite Sasuke trying to kill him on three separate occasions.
- There was a brief and unspoken moment of understanding back in their Academy days however; a few days after Sasuke lost his clan, Naruto found him near a pond and Naruto wanted to talk to him. Both looked at one another and said nothing, but there was an unspoken bond. Naruto himself confessed that he actually wanted to befriend Sasuke, but it ended up to where he viewed him as his rival. Naruto does reflect on how things would be different had he approached Sasuke like a friend in the first place.
Official Couple: In the Epilogue it is revealed that he is married with Sakura and both had a daughter.
Oh, Crap!: As an adult in Boruto, during in the time-travel arc when Jiraiya asks him if he's Sasuke Uchiha.
Older and Wiser: In his travels around the world, Sasuke has learned a lot and mellowed out.
One Head Taller: Although they don't share any scenes together in the movie, according to Kishimoto's character designs for The Last, Sasuke has gotten tall enough to be one head taller than his only love interest Sakura.
One-Winged Angel: His Level 2 Cursed Seal of Heaven form, which gives him grey skin, purple hair, black sclera and lips, fangs, a star-like mark on his nose, and hand-shaped wings. He lost one wing to Deidara and the ability to use it all together after Itachi purged him of Orochimaru's Soul Fragment.
Only Mostly Dead: After being impaled with his own sword by Madara, Sasuke was left to bleed out and according to Karin his chakra signature is gone, meaning he's either dead or on the brink of death. He gets healed by Kabuto just in time.
The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Maintains this attitude towards Naruto even after his Heel–Face Turn, protecting him from Obito while imagining slicing Naruto's part of the Team 7 photo to pieces.
Opportunistic Bastard: Sasuke's role as an antagonist is a series of him merely betraying a more ambitious and powerful villain and hijacking their resources or achievements for his own use. First Orochimaru, then Tobi, and then Kaguya. At the conclusion, he finally executes his master stroke, waiting until all of the most powerful threats amongst the heroes and villains had eliminated each other, with only Naruto to stop him.
O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Sasuke always presents a cold and aloof façade, being reluctant to show his feelings. However, there are times when his self-control cracks and he's unable to hide them anymore. These moments are -invariably- turning points in his Character Development.
- When confronted with a disguised Orochimaru in the Forest of Death, Sasuke is so terrified that he opts to give up the Chunin Exams if the ninja leaves him, Sakura, and Naruto alone. Both Naruto and Sakura think what Sasuke is doing is out of character.
- The first time the cursed seal is activated, he becomes shortly Drunk with Power, freaking out everyone present, especially Sakura.
- When he sees Itachi again for the first time since the Uchiha slaughter, he loses all composure and sense of strategy to explode in a fit of rage and hatred, especially since the reason Sasuke runs into him is that Itachi is after Naruto.
- He's unable to hide his envy towards Naruto after he realizes how much stronger the "loser" has become. It gets lampshaded by Naruto during their fight on the hospital's roof.
  Naruto: What happened to the calm, controlled Sasuke? Am I making you nervous?
- After learning the truth about Itachi, he starts crying uncontrollably. It's his greatest display of emotion up to that point, showing just how much his family (and particularly his brother) meant to him. Then, he vows to destroy the Hidden Leaf and goes back to being cold and aloof but with some crazy added to the mix.
- Sasuke has let out an Evil Laugh twice — in Part I upon awakening his cursed seal's second stage, and in Part II after Naruto stops him from killing Sakura and demands that he stop walking down the path of darkness. Naruto, and in the latter case Sakura and Kakashi, are very much unnerved.
Out-of-Character Moment: No matter how calm, controlled or even emotionless he appears to be, Sasuke has always been driven by strong, (usually) negative emotions. After Itachi's death, however, he's empty. Completely drained, he sits passively and listens to Tobi's attempts at small talk. At least, he's passive until Tobi starts telling him about Itachi's true motives. After that, he gets back up and vows revenge on the Hidden Leaf.
Papa Wolf: Despite his flaws as a parent (read: being completely absent from Sarada's life), he shows shades of this, as he deeply cares about his daughter's safety. He angrily chews out Naruto for bringing her to the tower and, when she's about to be hit by a few kunai, he jumps in front of her with a look of pure horror on his face.
Parents as People: In Naruto Gaiden. He left Konoha to investigate a potential threat when his daughter, Sarada Uchiha, was a toddler, seeing how Sarada still remembered having a dad in her memories.
Partial Transformation: His mastery of the Curse Mark lets him to do this.
Perpetual Frowner: And when he does smile, it's usually either condescending or just plain creepy.
Pink Girl, Blue Boy: The Blue Boy (blue-black hair, dresses in shades of deep blue) to Sakura's Pink Girl (pink-haired, dresses in pink and red).
Playboy Has a Daughter: After his cold treatment of Sakura during their teenage years when she was just trying to win his heart, Sasuke now has a daughter with her named Sarada. Unusually for the trope, Sasuke never actively sought out girls during his youth; in fact, it was very much the opposite.
Playing with Fire: As an Uchiha, he has a natural affinity for Fire Release, mastering the clan's Great Fireball Technique years before becoming a genin, a feat which greatly shocked Kakashi. Sasuke can also coat fire around his shuriken, guide his flames along wire strings, or create a succession of dragon-shaped fireballs.
Plot Armor: Sasuke has a tendency to get into fights that are beyond his ability to win, only to suddenly demonstrate a new power that had never been seen or even hinted at before, or for another villain to bail him out at the last second. And then there's was the time in which Sasuke evaded certain death from an explosion by a combination of two moves that each had immense chakra requirements, despite the reason that he was in danger in the first place being that he had already used up almost all his chakra, and did so in an implausibly short amount of time.
Poor Communication Kills: All of Sasuke's problems can be traced to the fact that pretty much everyone who knows vital information refuses to tell him anything. Actually, the only people who do tell him the important information honestly are the very people trying to manipulate him. By the time anyone who is not planning on using him bothers to explain anything to him (especially regarding the deep end,) Sasuke has gone so far down the deep end with his hatred and madness, he can only lash out at what he perceives as targets.
- Sasuke himself is lucky to give his teammates a vague clue as to what lies at the source of his pain, probably out of not wanting to relive it. For instance, Naruto didn't find out about who Sasuke stated he wanted to kill until said target came after the former for (seemingly) his own plan and was staring him right in the face. Likewise, Naruto begging Sasuke to clarify why he didn't kill him at the end of the Valley of the End duel? Sasuke coldly says he doesn't owe him an explanation and lies about it being a simple whim, despite a lot of evidence to the contrary.
Post-Final Boss: He steps up after Kaguya and the Moon-Eye plan are defeated, thus saving the world from total destruction and enslavement. Despite being the final fight, from start to end it's less than ten chapters.
Power Degeneration: The Mangekyou Sharingan degrades the user's eyesight with each use. Sasuke shows just how fast they can degrade when he manages to reach comparable levels of blindness his brother Itachi had (who took years to get to that point thanks to his stamina issues limiting his uses) in only at most weeks, and quite possibly days due to spamming them against Killer Bee, the Kages and their bodyguards at the Summit, Danzo, and finally tapping out when he activates the Complete Susanoo for the first time in a rage facing Kakashi after the fight with Danzo.
The Power of Love: In a way you could say that his love for his family is what fuels his hatred for those who wronged them.
The Power of Hate: Tobi says that the more Sasuke gives into his own hatred, the stronger he becomes, which is literally true. Naturally this isn't a very healthy way to power up.
Power Tattoo: Orochimaru brands Sasuke with the Cursed Seal of Heaven in their first encounter. When active, the cursed seal saps Sasuke's own chakra and replaces it with a larger amount of Orochimaru's spreading black flame marks around his body, in turn increasing his strength and speed. Though useful, Sasuke's early uses of the cursed seal are often involuntary, painful while active, and leave him briefly unable to move afterward. These shortcomings are either minimized or eliminated once he becomes able to enter the cursed seal's second state: a transformation that turns his skin grey, lengthens his hair, and causes him to develop wings. The transformation's boosts to his physical parameters are similar to a jinchūriki's version 1 forms, which by Part II he can isolate to parts of his body.
- Later, Itachi removes the cursed seal from Sasuke's body, preventing him from using it again. However, he remains compatible with the cursed seal's source, Jūgo, allowing Jūgo to provide him flesh or chakra if the need arises.
Pretty Boy: Almost every female character he met has noticed how good-looking he is. Males, too.
Pride: Typical of Uchiha.
Psycho Electro: His electric attacks ultimately get used to put holes into allies and enemies alike, at times accompanied by a nice Psychotic Smirk.
Psycho for Hire: This is all he really is to Tobi. Sasuke is not important enough to be let in on Tobi's plans and the latter mostly uses him as muscle he can point at something. His ultimate value to Tobi is as a bargaining chip to keep Kabuto on his side, as some kind of gladiator he wants Naruto to fight, or as Gedo Mazo's new battery. Until Kabuto was knocked out of the game by Itachi and Sasuke.
Psychopathic Manchild: Definitely is this after the Kage Summit, particularly when he affectionately calls Itachi "Nii-san" for the first time in years after stabbing through Karin to lethally injure Danzo. Granted, he is still 16-17 by this point.
Psychotic Smirk: He starts flashing these during the Five Kage Summit arc, after he activates the Susano'o and gets obsessed with killing Danzo.
A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Kakashi's pupil until the end of Part I. Not especially nice, but good nonetheless.
Pure Is Not Good: The resurrected Itachi points out that Sasuke is still pure; this means that he is still easily influenced. As seen in Poor Communication Kills, alot of unscrupulous individuals have exploited this well.
Purple Is Powerful: Sasuke's Susanoo is easily one of the strongest in the entire series, and is also coincidentally very purple.
Put Them All Out of My Misery: When Sasuke discovers his clan was killed to prevent them from staging a coup against the Leaf Village, he decides they can only be properly avenged by killing not just those responsible, but also everyone who benefited from their deaths (which is to say the entire Leaf Village).
Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: He's black-haired, pale-skinned, and is considered by many girls to be quite handsome. He gets it from his mom.
Razor-Sharp Hand: The Chidori, which coats his hand in lightning chakra and amplifies its ability to cut and pierce objects. He can even extend it as Chidori Sharp Spear to act as a sword, and channel it into his chokuto to increase its cutting potency.
Real Men Hate Sugar: Sasuke doesn't like anything sweet.
"The Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivered in a roundabout way to Sakura. After Sakura pleads with him to not fight Naruto, asking him to stop if he ever loved her, Sasuke knocks her out with a genjutsu of him impaling her with Chidori. When Naruto and Kakashi berate his cruelty towards her, Sasuke sneers that Sakura was a naive fool deluding herself, that he doesn't have any reason to have feelings towards her, and that he had no idea why she'd fallen for him in the first place.
Redemption Rejection: In Part II, Sasuke has let himself be consumed by his desire for vengeance, sinking deeper into evil to achieve his goals. However, there are still some who try to save him from himself, no matter how futile it seems to be.
- The whole point in Team 7 raiding Orochimaru's base was to find Sasuke and bring him back to the Hidden Leaf. Yamato purposefully let Naruto and Sakura talk with Sasuke, hoping they could convince him to return willingly. Sasuke blows them off, resulting in a brief skirmish.
- Gaara also tried to change his mind during the Five Kage Summit arc. Again, this fails.
  Gaara: Sasuke, you and I are quite alike. We've both walked through the darkness of this world. So, your eyes should pick up even the faintest glimmer of light —in the past, or even at this moment.
  Sasuke: I shut my eyes a long time ago. The things I seek now lie only in the darkness.
- Naruto offers him one more chance after their second battle in the Final Valley. This time, Sasuke accepts Naruto's friendship and, at long last, admits that it was mutual all along.
Redemption Equals Affliction: Sasuke loses an arm on his road to redemption. It stays gone, presumably to remind him of what he used to be.
Redemption Quest: Sasuke goes off to see the witness the world with his own — now hateless — eyes.
Red Eyes, Take Warning: Sasuke was stated to be more evil as he used his Sharingan more. It's eventually revealed that this is quite literal, being a genetic trait of all Uchihas.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The stoic, dark colored Blue Oni to Naruto's Hot-Blooded, brightly colored Red Oni.
Reincarnation: Sasuke has Indra's chakra reincarnated into him. The previous incarnation was Madara Uchiha, so that says a lot about his potential.
Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Besides Amaterasu and Susanoo, two of Sasuke's Mangekyo-related abilities are derived from Eastern mythology. His right eye's ability, Kagutsuchi, refers to the Shinto god of fire. In his final battle against Naruto, Sasuke performs a Lightning Release jutsu known as "Indra's Arrow" via his Susanoo, its name and nature transformation refers to the god of lightning in Hinduism. His Rinnegan ability, Amenotejikara, is named after a Shinto god.
Removed Achilles' Heel: After awakening his Mangekyo, Tobi recommends to immediately replace them with Itachi's Mangekyo knowing that Sasuke would run the risk of going blind whenever he uses his new upgrade. At first he refuses, but he would eventually be forced to do so when his eyesight begins failing him towards the end of the Five Kage Summit Arc.
Repressed Memories: He suppressed the memories of the strong bond he shared with his brother, making it easier to hate him. And, unintentionally, he forgot that after Itachi's Breaking Speech to him during the night of the massacre, he gave chase and attacked him:
Sasuke: I saw him crying then. I thought I'd imagined it. I didn't realize it...
- It becomes repressed no longer thanks to Tobi. This leads to Sasuke's third psychological breakdown.
Required Secondary Powers: Like with Kakashi, use of the Chidori requires the Sharingan to be active to be used safely.
The Resenter: Sasuke started to freak because Naruto had become his equal, or better. Apparently he became the resenter because the Superpower Lottery wasn't enough anymore. Then again, this freakout only began after his brutal defeat at the hands of Itachi, who was a much bigger winner of said lottery than he was.
Revenge: His main motivation. At first towards Itachi for the Uchiha Massacre. Then towards the Konoha Elders, which would later extend to all of Konoha, once he learned about the truth behind the massacre.
Revenge Before Reason: Everything Sasuke does is somehow geared toward his revenge. No matter what revelations are thrown in his face, he is determined to act out against whatever he perceives to be responsible for his misery. Even Itachi himself couldn't talk him out of it immediately. It took some help from the Hokages, Naruto and even Sasuke himself to have his epiphany.
Revenge Myopia: Sasuke starts to fall into this as his sanity goes off the deep end. At first, his revenge plan is reasonable; he just wants to kill Itachi for murdering his entire family (plus mind raping him). Then Itachi dies, and he finds out that Itachi was a good guy all along, but was pressured into killing the Uchihas because they were going to revolt (and his torture of Sasuke was to further motivate Sasuke to grow strong and eventually kill him for his crimes). So Sasuke shifts his revenge to Danzo, the guy who pressured Itachi to kill his clan, ignoring that the Uchihas provoked it by threatening civil war because they felt mistrusted (Mind you, Danzo was responsible for that very mistrust along with a lot of other, and even less justified, atrocities and nobody would be all that sorry to see him go, but that's not what Sasuke was thinking about. Danzo even points out that it doesn't matter what he actually did, because Sasuke was on a revenge kick and wanted to hurt someone for the Uchiha massacre.). And once Danzo dies, he shifts his revenge to everyone in Konoha for having benefited from Itachi's suffering and his clan's destruction, their happiness in his mind now mocking laughter.
Reverse Grip: His preferred way of wielding his sword as it allows him to draw and use Kusanagi in one fluid motion to either defend himself or attack. May have something to do with the fact that even though he's ambidextrous, his left hand is the dominant one.
The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: He intends to bring down the current Shinobi system and reform the world, starting by murdering the five Kages and sealing away all the Bijuu.
The Rival: To Naruto. Sasuke is quite a notable example- he originally was not going to even be in the story, but Kishimoto's editor insisted that a rival-type character be inserted into the story; Kishimoto responded by deciding that this rival character would be his stab at creating the ULTIMATE Shonen rival character. Sasuke stands out from other characters of this type because he is much more integral to the story and is essentially the Deuteragonist in every meaningful way; while most Rival-characters eventually get surpassed by the main character and are often reduced to just another—if prominent—member of the supporting cast by the end of it, Sasuke is frequently on-par and even ahead of Naruto in terms of power level as well as plot importance. He is even the True Final Boss of both Part I and Part II of the manga, even after every Big Bad in the story has been defeated.
Rival Turned Evil: Easily one of, if not the, most well known examples of this trope in manga history. He starts off as Naruto's rival who had a bitter grudge to settle with his older brother Itachi. After receiving a brutal beatdown from Itachi, he realized he hasn't grown strong enough to confront him. That, and fearing that Naruto would eventually surpass him ultimately motivated him into defecting from Konoha and becoming Naruto's Arch-Enemy.

S-U

Sanity Has Advantages: Sasuke is a better fighter, a calmer thinker and overall a happier person when he isn't plagued by his grief-fueled insanity.
Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The savvy cold guy to loud Sakura's Energetic Girl.
Say My Name: "NARUTOOOOO!"
Self-Duplication: By adulthood, Sasuke is able to use the Shadow Clone Technique, able to easily produce eight clones at once.
Semi-Divine: Acheives demigod status just like Nagato when he obtains the Rinnegan. However, the methods they recieved it were different; Nagato's Rinnegan originally belonged to Madara, who transfered them to Nagato before his death, while Sasuke gained it by being granted the Yin half of the Sage of Six Paths' power.
Senseless Sacrifice: Naruto points out in the end that his final plan for a Zero-Approval Gambit won't work; all it will do is cause more fighting and suffering before Sasuke eventually dies and things go back to how they were before. Sasuke has no real counterpoint to this, but claims with his abilities he can probably become immortal despite significant evidence so far of this being impossible.
Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Naruto's Sensitive Guy. Sasuke hardly lets anyone into how he really feels, and has a real ego at times and develops into a Byronic Hero. Naruto is more cheerful whose hobbies includes gardening and he develops into an All-Loving Hero.
Shaping Your Attacks: His Chidori Eisou, Great Dragon Fire, and Sword of Kagatsuchi abilities.
Shadow Archetype: Both Naruto and Sasuke lost their families and had to live alone, are obsessive to the point of fanaticism in their goals, level up like it's going out of style to reach their goals (often conveniently matching or spurring each other's upgrades) and even are destined to face and probably end the ancient feud between Senju/Uchiha. Naruto himself lampshades it at some point, commenting that had some events not happened, their positions may very well have been reversed.
Shadow Dictator: His master plan revolves around him becoming this as he would rule the world from the shadows and prevent every conflict that arose in it due to the fear the rest of the world would have toward him.
Shock and Awe: He can use the Lightning Release, which takes the form of his primary jutsu the Chidori that he learns from Kakashi. While effective at piercing targets, the standard Chidori is a very close-range attack. For this reason, Sasuke uses the principles of Chidori to create several long-range jutsu in Part II, such as throwable needles, extendable swords, and scattershot streams. He often channels his lightning chakra into his Sword of Kusanagi to increase its cutting power. Before he unlocked the Mangekyo Sharingan, Sasuke's ultimate jutsu and ace-in-the-hole against Itachi was Kirin, a massive bolt of natural lightning shaped in the form of a dragon and guided by his Lightning Release like a lightning rod to hit with enough force to obliterate an entire stone temple, which Itachi only survived by unleashing the previously-unknown Susanoo and it still did heavy damage.
Shoot the Hostage: Happens when he stabs through Karin with his Chidori blade to hit his real target, Danzo.
Sibling Rivalry: As a child, he worked desperately to catch up to Itachi so he could receive the same acknowledgement from his father as Itachi would. After the massacre, he built hatred for his brother for taking away their parents and clan.
Sibling Yin-Yang: Sasuke and Itachi dynamic plays with this. As a child, Sasuke strived to be like Itachi to earn recognition, but his brother was always several steps ahead. After the Uchiha massacre, Sasuke tried to distance himself from Itachi and become different from him, even refusing to obtain power in the same way as his brother. However, after Itachi's death, Sasuke drastically changes, becoming driven by hate and revenge against anyone who would stand against him, unlike his brother, who was motivated by love, albeit in a twisted way. Ironically, Sasuke would have ended up very similar to Itachi, had the latter not traumatized him in the way he did. Another factor that makes these two different from each other, is that Sasuke is a Brutally Honest individual, while Itachi is a Consummate Liar.
Signature Move: Chidori. Later on Susanoo and Blaze Release.
Single-Target Sexuality: Even though he was consumed with revenge for most of the series, Sasuke finally showed sexual/romantic feelings for exactly one woman: Sakura Haruno, who he married and had a daughter with.
A Sinister Clue: Sasuke is left-handed.
Sliding Down The Slippery Slope: He was never fully sane or nice, but when he finds out about Itachi's real motives, he abandoned whatever moral standards and reason he had beforehand. By the time of the Kage conference, he is no longer above abandoning/sacrificing the rest of Hawk and indiscriminate murder to get his revenge.
Small Role, Big Impact: In The Last, he may have been Demoted to Extra, but if he hadn't arrived in Konoha when he did with Hiashi in tow, then the Hokage Monument would have been reduced to dust, Kakashi and countless others would have been killed and the Raikage would have blown up the moon, killing Naruto and co.
Smug Super: He’s fully aware of his power and doesn’t hesitate to remind opponents how foolish they are to challenge him since he comes from the Uchiha clan.
Socially Awkward Hero: Taking down powerful deities and psuedo-demigods come to him easily. Trying to be a parent and awkwardly bond with his estranged daughter? Not so much. It's outright pointed out that for years he spoke with his snake summon Aoda more often than he did with other humans.
So Proud of You: Sasuke is very proud that Sarada might became the first Uchiha who became a Hokage candidate, as Boruto sees and chooses her being the best choice in the upcoming future. Thanks to Naruto's teaching and influences.
Spontaneous Weapon Creation: By sealing shuriken and kunai into his arm bracelets, Sasuke can always have a large supply ready, allowing him to barrage targets in an instant.
Start X to Stop X: His master plan to end all wars in the world this to put the world into a perpetual state of war against him that would only last as long as he continued to perpetuate the hatred itself. Yeah...
Stock Shōnen Rival: Sasuke is a notable example and is a Trope Codifier amongst modern manga, much like Naruto is for the Stock Shōnen Hero. As a Privileged Rival, he unconsciously felt superior to his Naruto until he slowly closed the gap. Amongst his true target being more interested in his rival while dismissing him as nothing which lead to a Face–Heel Turn. Also after his journey as a villain and a final fight with Naruto. He goes back to be a good guy. Sasuke has black hair in contrast to Naruto's blond, his clothes are usually black or blue, and he's known for using fire and lightning.
The Stoic: Much more in Part II where he constantly has a blank face. His moods are more diverse in Part I: annoyment, excitement, concern... It shows just how much the darkness has consumed by this point.
Story-Breaker Power: While he has a wide array of powerful techniques thanks to his Rinnegan, it's his Amenotejikara that is the most broken. With it, he can swap objects within his field of vision in an instant. Offensively, he can teleport any opponent into a trap or an incoming attack, with its instantaneous nature giving the opponent little time to defend themselves. Defensively, he can use it to teleport himself out of a bind, and even swap places with his opponent and get them caught in their own techniques. Isshiki, despite being more powerful than Naruto and Sasuke combined, found this teleportation technique extremely troublesome and made it his priority to take out Sasuke first. The technique's only weakness is that Sasuke has to be within a certain distance of what he wants to switch with for it to work.
Strong and Skilled: Is able to use powerful techniques with great skill and power, especially his Amaterasu techniques, which can burn anything, with greater skill than his brother Itachi Uchiha, using Blaze Release.
Strong Family Resemblance:
- He bears a great deal of similarity to his mother.
- While they are not directly related, he strongly resembles his predecessor as Indra's reincarnation, Madara Uchiha, as an adult, particularly with the bangs covering the left side of his face.
Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He shows this both in Part I and after his HeelFaceTurn. He shows a sense of compassion for his friends and loved ones, despite being usually stoic and aloof.
Summon Magic: Sasuke learns to summon snakes during his time with Orochimaru. He typically summons them as shields, rapid ground transportation, or to bind targets. Sasuke can also summon a second animal species: hawks. His use of hawks is more limited than snakes, using them only for flight and the additional manoeuvrability that they allow.
Super Mode: His Cursed Seal's Level One was this up until he activated Level Two. Like everyone else which gains Naruto's cloak, his techniques are increased to a high level. For example: his Susano'o grows from barely 10 meters tall to about 118 and gains legs after receiving Naruto's chakra. With Jugo's help, he can create a Cursed Seal Susano'o for yet another Super Mode so he can damage Obito... and then he activates its Perfect form once he obtains the Rinnegan, giving it a nose and facial structure identical to Madara's Perfect Susanoo.
Superpower Lottery: By the end of the main series, Sasuke is one of the most powerful Shinobi on the planet, with only Naruto surpassing him, and even then, the gap between them is very narrow. He has a wide arsenal of abilities such as the Sharingan, the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, and most notably, the Rinnegan. The Rinnegan is most noteworthy in the fact that not only does he have all the natural abillities that come with the Rinnegan, such as the Six Paths Technique, but a few other abilities that are unique to him such as being able to travel to other dimensions and swap places between himself and any desired target.
Super-Reflexes: His first encounter with Rock Lee points out that he doesn't have this. He gains them through the course of the story. He becomes able to match, if not exceed various other fast techniques like Gaara's sand or react to the Raikage's Lightning Release Chakra Mode respectively.
Superpowerful Genetics: Being an Uchiha, he definitely gets the Super Power Lottery of abilities, and possessed Orochimaru's One-Winged Angel as well as his abilities for a short while. Then he obtained Indra's power.
Surpassed the Teacher: While it's debatable when he pulled this trope, by the end of the series he is much more powerful than Kakashi or Orochimaru. Kakashi might've been able to beat Sasuke when he had two sharingan, but he's a normal, if exceptional, ninja by the end of the series.
Surrounded by Idiots: His initial attitude towards the other members in Team 7, due to their incompetence in the beginning of the series. He also really must have felt this way when nearly every ninja girl fangirled over him the first time they met him. Seems to have this reaction to Team Snake at times as well.
Survivor Guilt: This was one of the main reasons why he took it upon himself to kill Itachi.
Swap Teleportation: Thanks to his new Rinnegan, he can use the Amenotejikara technique to swap the positions of any two objects in the user's field of vision.
Take Over the World: The final phase of Sasuke's plan invokes this. Unlike any point before that, mere Revenge is no longer the sole aim—now, he wants to Never Be Hurt Again by taking direct command of the ninja world himself. He doesn't have any desire to actually run the world, but does want to be the world's enemy, a unbeatable force they can unite against so that they never go to war with each other again.
Taking the Bullet:
- He did this for Naruto in the Land of Waves arc, taking many senbon from Haku. He claimed his "body moved on its own".
- He does this again when he uses his body to shield his daughter Sarada from Shin Uchiha Sr.'s blades.
Tall, Dark, and Handsome: His One-Winged Angel and his sanity slippage brings out the ugly side of things.
Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Later, he turns Ax-Crazy.
Tears of Remorse:
- After Tobi fills him in about Itachi's actions following their final showdown, which makes him realize his big bro loved him all along. It is the first time Sasuke cries on screen, save for flashbacks.
- He then cries a single tear after his final battle with Naruto, moved by the fact that despite everything he has done, his best friend just refuses to give up on him. This is treated as the sign that he has finally repented and dropped his obsession with revenge for good.
Teens Are Monsters: He is 15 years old in Shippūden, and after his Face–Heel Turn, he gradually falls down the path of villainy until we get to his temporary Sanity Slippage at the 5 Kage Summit. Thankfully, it all changes after his final defeat in Naruto's hands, for real this time.
Terror Hero: During his final confrontation with Naruto, Sasuke explains his plan to confront the evils of the Shinobi system, which basically amounts to making himself so hated that everyone stops fighting each other to fight him.
Thou Shalt Not Kill: After the Time Skip, he restricts himself and Team Snake from killing anyone because he only had his sights on killing Itachi. This goes out the window once he learns the truth about the Uchiha Massacre and sets his sight on killing all of Konoha and anyone else getting in the way of his revenge.
Thousand-Yard Stare: In flashbacks after the destruction of the Uchiha clan in Part I. In Part II, after Itachi's death.
Trademark Favorite Food: It's revealed to be omusubi with okaka and tomatoes. The latter is more well-known in the fandom.
Travel to Projectile: Sasuke's Amenotejikara technique lets him swap places with whatever his left eye is currently focused on. He most frequently uses his sword as the other object for this technique to avoid attacks and set traps for his enemies.
Took a Level in Badass:
- Between Part I and Part II. It's difficult to say whether or not the Mangekyo Sharingan gave him one, but his Eternal Mangekyo certainly did. Then he gets power from the Sage himself and becomes one of two people in the world who could battle Madara equally.
- Takes more levels in badassery in The Last, and when you think he can't get any cooler he's even more badass in Boruto: Naruto the Movie.
Took a Level in Cynic: Sasuke ends up taking several of these, falling all the way down to omnicidal insanity and looping back into being an Anti-Hero and wishing to become the ruler/protector of the village, deciding that he will do better than his callous, brutal predecessors.
Took a Level in Dumbass: Got noticeably more reckless after Itachi died. He underestimated Killer Bee during their fight and nearly died three times. He barges into the Kage Summit taking on five well-renowned Kages without any sort of plan or even any knowledge of their abilities and again nearly dies several times. Even after his Heel–Face Turn, he still charged in at the Ten-Tails, which seemed to be the progenitor of Narutoverse itself, to attack Obito without any sort of plan. Naruto, of all people, actually called him on this.
Took a Level in Idealism: As an adult, Sasuke fully adopts the Will of Fire and abandons the Curse of Hatred.
Took a Level in Jerkass: Starts as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold and slowly works his way down the queue as time passes. He wavers occasionally, but it never seems to stick.
Took a Level in Kindness:
- Specifically averted, even after his Heel–Face Turn. He still acts like a massive tool to all of his former friends, even though he is now once again their ally. Once the war ends and he is defeated by Naruto, however, he begins to act much more compassionately.
- Also before his Face–Heel Turn, he was opening up to his teammates and growing to care for them. Then Itachi showed up again...
Tranquil Fury: In his fight against Danzo. After getting him to admit the truth about how his family was murdered, he materializes his Susanoo, his face perfectly calm. His expression doesn't change when he crushes Danzo like an overripe fruit a minute later.
Trauma Conga Line: Itachi's first Tsukuyomi turned him from a happy kid to a somber screwed-up one. Itachi's second Tsukuyomi, undid all his recovery process and heavily unstablized him, leading to his first Face–Heel Turn. The revelation of Itachi's true allegiance utterly broke him, and finding out that Danzo harvested his dead family members' bodies for their Sharingan drove him off the deep end. While he might be a colossal jerk mostly, it's not hard to see why. Furthermore, it explains why he keeps remaining as an antagonist for so long. While similar characters have been able to overcome their past trauma, Sasuke is given fresh trauma pretty much time he is on the road of recovery, screwing him up even further.
Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Sasuke first awakened his Sharingan on the night of the Uchiha Clan Massacre, though he isn't able to do so again until several years later. Sasuke awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan after the death of his older brother, Itachi.
Troubled, but Cute: Sasuke completely misses the look (or at least, the dress code), though — that turtleneck, shorts, and kneesocks combination fairly scream "scrawny kid". Then again, Ninja are supposed to cultivate an unassuming personal appearance, even if, in fiction, they usually don't. He gets... better when he gets an Akatsuki trench coat and a murderous attitude later on.
Uncanny Family Resemblance: As an adult, he bears an even stronger resemblance to his ancestor, Madara.
Undying Loyalty: To his clan. And his cause. After the Edo Tensei is released in the 4th ninja war, he finally embrace Itachi's will and sides with the Ninja Alliance against Madara to protect Konoha... until Madara is dead and the threat of Kaguya is ended, at which point he goes straight to his cause and his clan, and not his village.
The Un-Favourite:
- As Itachi was the eldest of his sons, and hence, the successor of the clan, Fugaku focused most of his attention on him, as a result neglecting Sasuke. Sasuke felt his father didn't care for him until Itachi and Fugaku had a falling out.
- Subverted with his mother. While she loved both her children, it's implied she was a bit closer to him than she was with Itachi.
The Unfettered: Part of his Character Development and an excellent example. Counting from his first encounter with Itachi, he slowly goes more and more insane, and this trope results, though his dedication to Team Taka prevents him from truly becoming this. It is only after he kills Danzo and abandons them that he really becomes The Unfettered. The trope's page reads like it was written for him!
Ungrateful Bastard:
- As both the Leaf Village and Team Hawk find out. Not only did he leave all of his friends after all the time he'd spent with them, he also leaves Jugo and Suigetsu behind to be captured by the Samurai after they save him from the Third Raikage, and later shoots a Chidori through Karin after she heals him at the end of his fight with Danzo.
- White Zetsu is one of the reasons Sasuke even manages to get to Danzo instead of his crusade being cut short due to too much chakra being used up, Sasuke repays this by killing him to test his powers.
Unwanted Harem: Every girl his age, with the exception of Hinata, has been seen either commenting on or swooning over his hotness. Even Mei, who is considerably older than him, gets in on the act!
Unwitting Pawn: Sasuke was the Pawn of both Itachi and Tobi. No wonder he developed Chronic Backstabbing Disorder.
Uptown Guy: Zig-Zagged with Sakura. He's the heir to the famous and powerful Uchiha clan, while she comes from a well-off but non-clan, non-canon family. However, by the time they become an Official Couple, the situation is reversed—Sasuke is a rogue ninja with almost everyone hating him, while Sakura is the Fifth Hokage's apprentice and becomes the best medical ninja in Konoha after Tsunade retires.
Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was an extremely sweet kid before Itachi murdered his family and tortured him by forcing him to relive their deaths for three days straight. Afterwards, he is... less nice.

V-Z

Variant Power Copying: With the Sharingan, he was able to copy and memorize the taijutsu he witnessed from Rock Lee with near-perfect accuracy. He later on based his Lion Combo on Rock Lee's Front Lotus in the chunin exams.
Vengeance Feels Empty: Kakashi warned him about this but Sasuke didn't listen and joined Orochimaru to achieve his goal. After he killed Itachi, however, he completely shuts down; he doesn't even care how he got in that cave or who's the masked man. He's just... passive. It's not known what he would have done if Tobi hadn't told him about Itachi's true motives, reigniting his hatred.
Villain Ball: Sasuke begins to make more and more illogical actions during the Five Kages Arc. Instead of, you know, acting like a shinobi and keeping himself hidden, he decides to meet the investigating Samurai head on. And kills most of them brutally. When the Raikage and his bodyguards C and Darui arrive, he doesn't try to hide. Again, meeting three powerful ninjas head on alone. He gets soaked and electrocuted by Darui for his troubles. Any other ninja would start trying to cut their losses. Not Sasuke. He gets himself caught in C's blinding genjutsu, but even though he can see through it A and Darui nearly blitz him and Suigetsu and Jugo have to save him. Rise, rinse, repeat for the rest of the arc. The biggest ball he grabbed was when Karin was taken hostage by Danzo. Instead of going for a headshot, he decides to shoot through Karin to kill Danzo, because having been taken hostage somehow translates in Sasuke-logic to having outlived her usefulness.
Villain Corner: It got really dark, really quickly...
Villainous Breakdown: It happened twice:
- The first time it happened during his fight with Kakashi after meeting Team Seven again. He gets uncharacteristically mad at a "low-life" like Kakashi merely possessing a Sharingan, then claims that the laughter of the villagers in his memories is ridicule because they're ignorant of Itachi's sacrifice: he'll shut them up by killing everyone in Konoha. He goes completely Laughing Mad.
- The second time it happened during his final battle with Naruto. As the final battle between them drags on, he gets increasingly frustrated with Naruto's determination and finally starts screaming for him to lose.
Villain Protagonist: Villain Deuteragonist, more accurately. Sasuke receives almost as much focus as Naruto himself, with most of Part 2 of the series being centered around his descent into madness and villainy and Naruto's attempts to stop him. He best fits the Villain Protagonist role in the Five Kage Summit arc, especially in his fight against Danzo.
Vitriolic Best Buds: Back when Sasuke was still with Konoha, he and Naruto were like this, trading insults and each giving as good as they got, yet acknowledging each other as their best friend. They are this once again when Sasuke joins up with him in the fight against Madara. Even in adulthood, long after his Heel–Face Turn he still humorously talks down to Naruto.
Waistcoat of Style: He started wearing a stylish blue-gray one as an adult, as seen in Naruto Gaiden and promotional material for the upcoming Boruto: Naruto the Movie.
Walking Shirtless Scene: His first outfit in Part II was this to a certain extend. His shirt was open all the way to the blue cloth tied around his waist, exposing half his torso. And he actually had a functional reason for his not-shirt: it's so his Cursed Seal form's wings don't rip his clothes every time he uses them as they erupt from his back. So, when he wants to activate the Curse Mark, he takes off the sleeves and leaves his shirt hanging from his rope-belt.
Walking the Earth: After helping save the world and having one last fight with Naruto, both of them end up reconciling and Sasuke ultimately decides to leave the village for awhile to see the world without eyes clouded by hate and to try to atone for his crimes. He promises that he will return to Sakura soon. He does and the two eventually travel together for some time and marry. However, Sasuke's wanderings begin again with renewed purpose, namely to ensure that no contingency plans of Kaguya's familiar Black Zetsu exist and that a repeat of Tobi/Obito and Madara Uchiha's plan of Infinite Tsukuyomi never occurs again. Moreover, he realizes that Kaguya created the Zetsu army to face some external threat, and as the only human left with a Rinnegan he is the one best suited to investigate this threat. He ends up spending much of his daughter Sarada's childhood not just wandering the Earth but using his Rinnegan to travel other dimensions as he searches for the secrets of Kaguya's clan while also handling many other long term missions that benefit from his unique abilities. After reuniting with Sarada and Sakura to deal with Shin Uchiha, he makes an effort to return home more often.
Was It Really Worth It?: Starts questioning his desire for revenge following his encounter with Edo Itachi.
"Well Done, Son" Guy:
- As a child, Sasuke constantly pushed himself to be the best in his class and get his father Fugaku's attention until, you know, his brother killed his entire family.
- His relationship with said brother is also like this — even after Itachi was believed to have slaughtered the entire clan.
Well-Intentioned Extremist: Although Sasuke still displays some fairly selfish traits after his Heel–Face Turn, he arguably qualifies as this. His new goal is to cast down the antiquated system that was the ultimate cause of his suffering and that of countless others, and he's willing to do anything, including destroying the Tailed Beasts and sacrificing his own happiness for the rest of eternity, to do so.
We Used to Be Friends: The patron saint of this. Not only with Naruto and Konoha, even his new allies who were ready to give their lives for him were quickly discarded. In fact, he still considers Naruto his closest friend, which is why he feels compelled to kill him.
Wham Line:
- When questioned by the Rookie Nine about his decision to fight in the War:
  Sasuke: I will become Hokage.
- Throws another one after Kaguya is defeated:
  Sasuke: ... but first... I am going to execute the five kages that are still inside the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
- Yet another one in his fight with Naruto:
  Sasuke: Naruto, that jutsu is the symbol of your weakness... a jutsu that shows exactly how lonely you are.
  Sasuke::I'll admit it. I lost.
What Does She See in Him?:
- Sasuke says this about himself when dismissing Sakura's second confession towards him.
- A platonic variant regarding Naruto's determination to redeem Sasuke. Many people tell Naruto that he should give up on him due to his increasingly heinous actions (even Sakura, though she doesn't go through with it her attempt), and are befuddled Naruto keeps calling him his friend and wanting to save him. Sasuke's probably the MOST befuddled about this.
What the Hell, Hero?: Early on, Sakura confides in him that she believes Naruto is so annoying and undisciplined because he has no parents to teach him how to behave. Sasuke, who's entire family was slaughtered by his older brother, is rightfully disgusted and promptly chews her out for it.
When He Smiles: The very, very few times he gives a genuine smile, the layers of trauma is peeled back and the innocent kind child he once was can be said. It's quite surprising.
White Sheep: As a child, to the Uchiha Clan. Sasuke was completely unaware of the coup they were planning, which is partially why Danzo was willing to let him live when he ordered Itachi to wipe them out (though his main reason was leverage). As a teenager, he is dangerously close to embodying the clan's worst traits, but after his Final Battle with Naruto he snaps out of it, becomes The Atoner, and ultimately embodies this trope as an adult.
Why Won't You Die?: As the final battle between him and Naruto drags on, he gets increasingly frustrated with Naruto's determination and starts screaming for him to lose.
Wild Card: Mainly in Part II, but he is already one at the end of Part I.
Willfully Weak: He forgoes having an artificial arm made to replace the one he lost fighting Naruto.
Winged Humanoid: His Cursed Seal Level 2 transformation has hand-shaped wings, and his Rinnegan-enhanced Perfect Susanoo has a pair of bat-like wings.
Wise Beyond His Years: Sasuke who was designed specifically to be in this trope as a contrast to Naruto. The author even revealed that he had trouble drawing him at first because he had a lack of experience in drawing characters who are "wise beyond their years".
Wise Serpent: Sasuke was already fairly smart before training under Orochimaru, a powerful, cunning ninja from whom he inherits the snake summoning contract. After that, he develops a plethora of ninja techniques that make him very versatile in battle. He masters two nature transformations, signs two summoning contracts, and even creates his own jutsu. His cunning in combat also improves, using genjutsu (illusionary arts) far more efficiently to trick his opponents.
With Great Power Comes Great Insanity:
- Every time Sasuke gets a power-up, he grows increasingly more delusional and batshit crazy.
- This plays into the opposite version: With Great Insanity Comes Great Power. Every time an Uchiha is pushed to their emotional limit, (which they're prone to due to forming intense emotional connections and well, being a clan of ninja where death happens a fair bit) they unlock more Sharingan powers. This is probably where the whole "kill your best friend to get the Mangekyo Sharingan" tradition came from.
Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: He becomes one after hearing the truth about Itachi.
Worf Had the Flu: In Naruto Gaiden, Sasuke couldn't use his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan - Tomoe Rinnegan during his first clash with Shin Sr because he was low on chakra from travelling between dimensions. He recovers soon enough, however, and pays Shin back with interest.
World's Strongest Man: Self-proclaimed, and, much like Pain, Sasuke has the power to back this up completely. At the time of this claim he's absorbed the power of all nine Tailed Beasts into his Susanoo and Kurama outright states Sasuke has reached the same level as Hagoromo, the man revered as a god. Naruto, who has half of the power of the Sage at best, half Kurama and bits of chakra from the other beasts, is the only one who can face him and actually ends up defeating him in combat. As of now both him and Naruto share this title.
Would Hit a Girl:
- He shoots Karin with his lightning and nearly kills Sakura.
- Before Shippuden, he fights Temari with no hesitation, and then knocked Sakura out after she tries to stop him from leaving Konoha.
Yin-Yang Bomb: Sasuke and Naruto vs. anyone else, with Sasuke as the Yin to Naruto's Yang. Made much more evident when Hagoromo gives them each half of his chakra; Sasuke gaining the Six Paths Yin, while Naruto gains the Six Paths Yang.
You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
- Towards Konoha as a whole; he leaves in the middle of the night without saying goodbye to his friends (though Sakura catches him) when he decides that his home village makes him weak and there is nothing useful he can learn there.
- Towards Orochimaru, no less! He did some research to defeat him.
- Later done to Suigetsu and Jugo. He thanks them for saving his life repeatedly by telling Karin to leave them behind when she expresses concern for them, just so he can have his shot at Danzo. They get captured for their loyalty.
- Karin, while not taking direct part in the battle, is instrumental to Sasuke's victory over Danzo, and healed him from his earlier wounds to enable him to fight. When Danzo takes her hostage, Sasuke shoots them both with his Chidori. He tells her that she became a burden when she became a hostage.
- After the Moon Eye Plan is defeated, he plans to kick off his revolution by killing the 5 Kages and seals the Tailed Beasts, believing they're obstacles to fixing the shinobi system. When he states he plans on killing Naruto first and is called out on it since he needs Naruto to end the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Sasuke retorts that the only thing he needs is the chakra of the Tailed Beasts, not Naruto himself.
You Shall Not Pass!:
- Proposed doing this to enable Naruto to escape with Sakura, but Naruto, his resolve restored, was able to defeat Gaara.
- In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 5, he fights off Code and the Claw Grimes so that Boruto can escape. As a result, he's trapped in a tree and a Divine Tree is created using him as a template.
Zero-Approval Gambit: What his master plan amounts to. His goal is to make himself the most infamous figure in all of history and take all the hatred, scorn, and antagonism of the world unto himself. That way, the world will unite against him and peace can be established as long as they live in fear of him.
