Pay attention: it is PAL system color, and it may not work in your DVD/Blu-Ray player, despite it is region free (zero). It did NOT work in my DVD/Blu-Ray player. The disc was made in the European Union, and I’m in the U.S.. So, it will probably work in E.U., but not in the U.S..It’s a brand new DVD, without scratches or fingerprints.

I was a fan of Dire Straits and had seen them back in the 80s but was seated too far too enjoy it. I've got a couple of concert DVDs of Knopfler on his own (and obviously older) and while the music is fantastic, he acts as if he's bored on stage and thus is boring to watch (except to see his virtuoso guitar playing). Since this video is probably around 25 years earlier, you can see when he put more energy into his performance and looks like he is enjoying himself. The camera work is excellent and of course the music is magical. The crowd in this large, beautiful stadium go wild when DS first come out and after they finish an incredible version of Calling Elvis, I can say if I was there I would have been happy if they said "Good night" afterwards and went home just after playing this opener! A percussion solo on the first song? Who does that?!! Incredible. Then they come back with a rousing version of Walk of Life that gets you right back on your feet again. Thank goodness they play some slower songs to be able to catch your breath. They really beef up most of their rockers here so be prepared to do some dancing because these guys rock when they get going. MK's favorite steel guitarist adds some amazing solos himself. Possibly the best live DVD I've got of several bands.

Easily one of the greatest Dire Straits concerts ever. A very young Mark Knopfler, and the rest of the band. One very endearing aspect of this band is the innate chemistry between the different members - they smile at each other, and the overall environment on stage seems very relaxed, pleasant and enjoyable. They really enjoy playing together. The energy of the band is evident, but most important of all - the music! You could listen to this concert with your eyes closed, and enjoy every moment of it - probably more. These guys can play. Knopfler's Sprechgesang - not quite singing, not quite speaking, is a unique way of imbibing emotion into the most ordinary of words. His guitar of course is really adding another 'voice' to his music. These guitars are all abut "tone". This concert is no different in that regard. One of the best renditions of 'Solid Rock", and "Local Hero". That last one will have you with either a very sad, and heavy heart, and/or tears welling up in your eyes - so moving is the rendition!

One of the drawbacks of the production, is that it is very simple: you get to either play a specific song, or the entire concert. We have been spoiled by other productions, which have background material, featurettes, and so on. None of that here. I also wish the concert was available in a Stereo rendition. You get a Dolby Digital version of the concert. Concerts are seen with the band performing in front of you, not all around you. The producers screwed up in that regard. Exceptional sound quality, though, and you can really hear the guitars wail. If you enjoy Knopfler, you'll love this concert.

Mark Knopfler has been described as having the charisma of a soggy head of lettuce. That's about right. All he does is stand up and play his guitar and sing. Once in a while he'll shake a leg. Some of the other Dire Straits are a little more animated but none of them -- thank God -- is Janet Jackson. (Pardon me for thinking that the quality of music went all too hell when singers started dancing.)
Knopfler can play that guitar and watching his fingers snake around the frets and strings is entertainment enough. He makes it look so easy! And most of his songs are great -- although I wish "Sultans of Swing" and "Telegraph Road" were included. The other guys in the band are also seriously good musicians. The sax and flute, the drums, the keyboards, and an old fashioned country-music pedal steel guitar (is DS the only rock band to have a steel guitar?) all have their moments in the spotlight and all of them are grown-ups. DS is a classy band.
The best songs on this VHS are concerned with love and war: "Romeo and Juliet" (MK plays a weird looking metal guitar) and "Brothers in Arms." "Money for Nothing" is here, and "Private Investigations." The first three songs on the VHS are all rockers that I don't find outstanding, so fast forward to song number 4, "Romeo and Juliet." and watch it from then on. It's mostly mellow.

I bought "On The Night" having heard only a few samples. I hoped it wouldn't be an all-too-typical filmed concert - weird cinematography, indifferent sound quality, and no sense of the concert experience. I needn't have worried: this is a FABULOUS concert recording! The music, the audio quality, the cinematography, and the production values are superb. Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits were on the band's final tour, and the group was honed to perfection on every level. The musicians, song selection and ambiance combine to make a fantastic whole. Knopfler is shown at the very top of his superb best - by turns tasty, dynamic, driving, understated, but always with the audience totally captivated. Other musicians include Alan Clarke, Phil Palmer, Guy Fletcher, and pedal steel guitar wizard Paul Franklin. All give stellar performances, with Knopfler highlighting everyone's talents and at the same time leading hot and tight. Knopfler's guitar style had evolved from Alchemy (1984) with a "less is better than more" subtlety, matured in both technique and musicality. The song selection is brilliant, alternating between hard-driving rock and introspective ballad. The closing number, "Going Home", brought tears to my eyes and held the audience breathless. My only criticism of this DVD is that it's too short. The concert tour's song selections could easily have made "On The Night" a full 2-DVD set. I recommend "On The Night" wholeheartedly: this is Dire Straits presented at their very best. You will not be disappointed.
