Nicki Minaj And A$AP Ferg’s New Single Breaks The Record For The Biggest Fall In Hot 100 History

This article is more than 3 years old.

It looked for a while like the powerful trio of A$AP Ferg, MadeinTYO and Nicki Minaj might have been headed to the Hot 100’s top 10 with their new single “Move Ya Hips,” which was welcomed warmly by fans and which became a bestseller instantly. The track ended up beginning its time on the tally inside the top 20 instead, debuting, and peaking (it turns out) at No. 19.

Now, just one week after it launched inside the top 20, the single has made history on the Hot 100, but it’s in a fashion that few artists are probably interested in.

This frame, “Move Ya Hips” doesn’t just fall from its starting point, it nearly disappears from the Hot 100 entirely. The track tumbles from No. 19 to No. 99, slipping 80 spots in a single turn. That’s not just a noticeable decline in stature, it’s a historic dip.

Ferg, MadeinTYO and Minaj’s new single now holds the title for the largest fall in Hot 100 history, and it beats the previous record holder by just one rung. Almost a decade ago, Javier Colon’s “Stitch By Stitch” fell from its starting point of No. 17 to No. 96, and it disappeared quickly thereafter. For nine years, that has held as the largest drop on the chart, but that is no longer the case.

There are plenty of instances of songs debuting high on the Hot 100 and then not managing a second frame at all, but this specific piece of history doesn’t include those cuts. Instead, it’s only concerned with the tunes that did spend at least two frames somewhere on the list, as those declines are measurable.

While it might not become a longstanding smash for all involved, “Move Ya Hips” does now stand as both Ferg and MadeinTYO’s highest-charting track on the Hot 100. Minaj has risen much higher on many occasions, but this latest win was special, as it helped her advance on the all-time ranking of musicians with the most placements on the all-encompassing list. Thanks to one more smash, Minaj tied fellow rapper Future for the fourth-most Hot 100 appearances of all time last week.
