Diogo Jota insists Liverpool are finally starting to see the best of Darwin Nunez following his turbulent start, as he admits it's taken 'a few more games' for the £85m striker to adapt to the Premier League

Diogo Jota has backed Liverpool's big-money summer signing Darwin Nunez to start flourishing in the Premier League after the striker's turbulent first few months in English football.

Nunez was signed from Benfica for £85million, with there being a lot of hype from fans around the arrival of the striker after he netted 34 times in 41 games in all competitions last season.

The 23-year-old started well in England, scoring in both the Community Shield and on his Premier debut, but a red card for a headbutt on Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen in their 1-1 draw at Anfield in August raised questions over his attitude.

There was a lot of pressure on Nunez's shoulders after he arrived as the club-record signing and part of a plan to replace Sadio Mane's impact on the team after the Senegalese attacker was sold to Bayern Munich.

Goalless games would then follow until he grabbed Liverpool's first equaliser against Arsenal last weekend.

The Uruguayan fired home Luis Diaz's cross. Although the Reds would go on to lose the game, it was another promising display for Nunez after he also caught the eye in Champions League wins over Ajax and Rangers.

Fellow striker Jota believes that his team-mate should be given some credit for showing the mental ability to bounce back from his tricky start to life in England.

Ahead of the Champions League clash with Rangers, Jota said: 'Well, I think like in life sometimes you get over things.

'Obviously he started really well and people were starting to think his adaptation was never a problem but maybe it required a few more games to get used to that level that he showed us and he showed everyone last year.

'And with this run of games he is having, he has already scored and I think he is finding himself in a better position and people in the squad are understanding his game better.

'So it’s good for everyone and tomorrow will be more proof of that, I hope.'

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also heaped praise on Nunez after his performance against the Gunners.

He said: 'I thought he was really good, even in the difficult parts of the game for Liverpool, he was their best player, his runs were good.

'Liverpool needed a centre forward. [Sadio] Mane leaving, [Roberto] Firmino... I think people who watch him far more than I do say he was dropping off a little bit, so they had to revitalise that front three.

'They needed a centre forward. When they signed Nunez, there was this comparison between [Erling] Haaland and Nunez.

'I remember the headlines around that time [after the Community Shield], we all should and look at us now three months later, but that was a debate.'
