I saw this flick on TV as a kid and LOVED it. Of course I first taped it off TV on the Sunday afternoon matinee, then bought the VHS copy, then the Laser disc edition which was NOT widescreen...WTF...? ARRRG! And now finally... the blu ray edition. Horray!
The film looks great. The ONLY thing I have to complain about is that the alternate harmonica and banjo/guitar instrumental score over the opening title sequence that I grew up with, was not on an alternate audio track. This was the first version I've ever seen with the 1930's song "WE'RE IN THE MONEY" played over this section. I did not see this when it was first released so I do not know which is correct.
Milius himself has called this film, his first, "crude" but I disagree. This is not the first nor the last film depicting the life of the 30's gangster, but my opinion is that it is the best. It is not historically accurate, which does bother me but the visceral feel of the film more than makes up for that flaw. I was anxiously awaiting the Michael Mann version and was left cold by it. I have watched it many times and try my best to "get into it" but for all it's accurate details, there is no life to it. Milius' film has the fable aspect that thrusts the story ahead and its great cast make you want to like these guys despite them being cold blooded killers/robbers.
Yes this is a "low budget" film and made by the golden boys of Indie drive-in exploitation at the time, American International, but Milius' deft hand lifts the film to mythic levels to how ordinary people in the “dirty-30’s” regarded Dillinger, a Robin Hood figure robbing the much hated banks and leaving the FBI in the dust. This is a fable and Dillinger is an anti-hero... AND it works on that level.
The extras are good but not stellar.

Arrow Video released this 1973 version of "Dillinger" on both Blu-ray and a new DVD, having been released before on DVD by MGM in 2000, with the sole extra having been the theatrical trailer, which is ported over here along with new extras like on-camera interviews with crew members composer Barry De Vorzon, producer Lawrence Gordon, and DOP Jules Brenner, with an audio commentary by author Stephen Prince.
Looking quite good in HD, this remake of the 1945 film (not yet on Blu-ray) was written and directed by John Milius and starred Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, Harry Dean Stanton, John Ryan, and Richard Dreyfuss. Filled with a lot of action, and a fine cast, this still remains a bit crude and morally muddled.

Yep, you're right. The real history of the Dillinger Gang seems to be a sideline to this film... but I love it anyway. I've done good bit of research on the history of John Dillinger, and being from northern Indiana, I've heard a few true life accounts from my grandparents and others from that generation. They're all gone now, but the legend still lives on. Dillinger was apparently quite a character, but I think this movie skipped over his darker, more criminal side. Yes, the depictions of him giving money back to the farmers in the bank were true, but he was truly a shoot-em-up guy, and very dangerous... otherwise he never would have made it as long as he did. He was indeed a folk hero, kind of a Robin Hood to a public who didn't have much else to lose anyway. I love this movie, despite it's historical inaccuracies... the cast is wonderful, and the cinematography is outstanding. I don't know where it was filmed, but it absolutely looked like the midwest in the early 1930's. Like I've read in other reviews, if you want true history, crack open a book... but if you want a fun, and sometimes funny and sad version of this gangs capers, then look no further. Some of it is very accurate, but overall it is a little over-glamorized. In fact, the old John Dillinger Musuem in Nashville, Indiana discretited the film completely... except that they kept a framed movie poster from this film on the front of the building. These gangsters were pretty hardcore in reality... still, this is a great film and a lot of fun to watch. Enjoy!

One of the best of the bunch of 1970s crime thrillers

One of the best of the bunch of 1970s crime thrillers. Warren Oates outdoes Johnny Depp as Dillinger in every respect and Ben Johnson is terrific as Melvin Purvis. A must-own for fans of the genre!

Movie Dillinger

"We're In The Money - The Sky Is Sunny"
Reviewed in Germany on November 10, 2013

Reviewed in France on August 22, 2009
A voir absolument
