A man and a woman were found slain at the side of an Eastern Sierra highway, and the investigation closed the region’s main road for a day.

The bodies were discovered around 6:30 a.m. Monday by a CalTrans snowplow driver on Highway 395 near Devils Gate Pass, about 10 miles north of Bridgeport, the Mono County Sheriff’s Office said.

Few details of the crime have been released. An update Tuesday afternoon from the sheriff’s office said: “It was determined that the man and woman had been murdered. … It can be confirmed that neither are local to Mono County or surrounding areas. The crime appears to be
specific and targeted.”

Fifteen miles of Highway 395 was closed, between Bridgeport and Sonora Junction (Highway 108), until 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The main detour route was Highway 182, but a crash on that road Monday morning  caused its closure as well. It reopened at 2 p.m. Monday.

The weekend’s storm dropped about 6 inches of snow in the Bridgeport area and left the roads icy.
