I am not a musicologist or musician; merely a opera fan who like to read libretto in both the original language and English. I am bilingual, however, and always I like good, both true to the spirit and true to the letter, translation. This one, is decidedly not. Hofmannsthal may not turn in his grave; can't imagine that he'd be happy. You don't need to go far - just read the first line and its' translation - "Wie du warst! Wie du bist! Das Weiss niemand, das ahnt keiner!" Did the translator fancy himself to be a poet now instead of a translator? In my training as a professional translator, you are told to leave your ego outside the door. You do not speak for the speaker; you do not "improve" him/her, and you most definitely do not "write over" him/her! The lyric, literal, and psychological nuance in these few lines are completely lost with the "rewrite" of translator.
The introductions are informative enough, if you don't know much about Richard Strauss or Der Rosenkavalier.
