Dentists
Dentists specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the oral cavity, including the teeth and gums. Dentists are also referred to as general dentists, and those who practice a dental health specialty (such as endodontics) are also certified to practice general dentistry. General dentists perform preventative care through comprehensive dental examinations and X-rays, often through scheduled visits in order to monitor patients’ general oral health. General dentistry may also involve more complex procedures such as root canal treatment and dental veneers.
Practicing general dentistry requires two degrees: a Bachelor’s degree, usually within the biological sciences, and either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) from dental school. Because dental school is the extent to the educational requirements of practicing general dentistry, many dental specialists (like endodontists and orthodontists) are also qualified to practice general dentistry.
The terms “general dentist” and “family dentist” are often used interchangeably, but refer to different practices. Family dentists hold the general dentist title with an advanced specialization in treating patients of all ages, from infancy to advanced age.
You should seek care from a general dentist for a number of conditions. A visit to the dentist’s office can provide preventative education, completion of both complex and non-complex procedures or referral to a specialist such as an orthodontist.
