When it comes to making a style statement at the Met Gala, the trickiest thing might simply be offering a look we’ve never seen before. On that, however, Jared Leto has something of a track record: who can forget the outfit he wore to 2019’s camp-themed outing, where he accessorised with a wax replica of his own head?

So it makes sense that Leto also delivered one of tonight’s most unexpected outfits, stepping out in a look that upped the ante on twinning style. His compatriot in delivering the ultimate matchy-matchy getup was none other than Alessandro Michele, the creative director of Gucci, and Leto’s close friend.

The pair wore cream-coloured tuxedos embellished with glittering floral embroidery, crisp white shirts, floppy red satin bow ties, and leather gloves to hold their brown suede clutches. The best detail of all, though, was their matching hairstyles. Both let their long hair run free, with a glitzy crystal clip to tuck their flowing brown tresses off their faces.

It’s not the first time that Leto and Michele have referenced their (let’s be honest, uncanny) resemblance while walking a red carpet. For the 2018 Met Gala, the duo showed up wearing coordinating suits, lavishly embroidered in gold thread with swirling baroque patterns to reference that year’s theme of Catholicism. In 2019, Michele also posted a snap to Instagram of his summer vacation in which he and Leto were both sporting floral shirts and straw hats while gathering vegetables in an Italian field.

For tonight’s Met Gala, though, the pair clearly decided to take their analogous fashion alchemy to the next level – and it made for one of the evening’s most charming red carpet moments. When asked by red carpet host Hamish Bowles how to define their look, they answered simply: “Double trouble.” Sounds about right.
