TerraMaster and Asustor NAS
Best hard drives for NAS

If you're looking for new hard drives to increase the storage capacity of your NAS, you've come to the right place

Network-Attached Storage (NAS) systems are a godsend when it comes to storing and sharing large chunks of data with all your devices. Most NAS enclosures have more hard drive bays than even a gaming PC because you may require a lot of storage capacity depending on your workload. Heck, even if you don't need plenty of HDDs for your day-to-day tasks, you can still run some extra hard drives in RAID mode to improve the overall read/write speeds and protect your data from drive failure and corruption.

If you have a lot of pictures, messages, and files that you don't want to lose, backing up your devices is crucial. For iPhones, this process is very simple. There are two ways of going about it: you can either create a full backup on your computer or just use the iCloud backup feature. Using your PC and Mac to back up iPhone data is a longer process, so we'll be concerning ourselves with the iCloud approach.

Why Apple's M4 iPad Pro may end my 13-year tablet drought

I owned the original iPad in 2010, but sold it and never looked at another tablet ... that is until now.

4
By

Apple announced the all-new M4 processor alongside the only device sold with the chip, the 2024 iPad Pro. This marks the first time Apple has launched a new processor with a handheld device and not a Mac as well as an M-class processor instead of an A-class. What this means is the new iPad Pro launching later this month will be one of the most powerful Apple devices, aside from the Mac Pro of course. I owned an original iPad, which launched in 2010, and haven't had another tablet since. Watching the iPad Pro launch has made me reconsider this stance.

OpenAI's Sam Altman promises to show off something that "feels like magic" - but it isn't a search engine

OpenAI has big things to announce on May 13th, but Sam has taken to the stage to declare what we won't see.

By

Where will you be on May 13th at 10 am PT? If you've got some time spare, you may want to check out what OpenAI is up to. The company has announced that it's prepping some updates on its projects via a live stream on its website. While we're unsure as to what the company will announce, we now know what won't be. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has made a "de-announcement" of several potential ChatGPT features, so now we know what not to expect on Monday.

Raspberry Pi 5 with standoffs installed

The Raspberry Pi 5 is the fastest Raspberry Pi made yet. Its CPU runs at 2.4 GHz compared to the 1.8 GHz of its predecessor, the Raspberry Pi 4, and its GPU runs at 910MHz, over 80% faster than the RPi4. But it could be faster.

How to use iMessage on Android using BlueBubbles

iMessage is a great way to send messages if you have an iPhone. That is, unless you set up a BlueBubbles Server.

4
By

Following multiple high-profile attempts by Beeper and Sunbird to get iMessage working on Android, there's more interest in the possibility now than ever before. Of course, that's because iMessage is one of the best messaging apps out there, but it is limited to Apple devices. Beeper somehow managed to reverse-engineer iMessage with Beeper Mini, but that was quickly shut down. Now, even Beeper Cloud doesn't support iMessage natively, instead choosing to list it as an experimental feature. But there are other ways to get iMessage on Android, and one of them is BlueBubbles.

You can now get your fortune told by a Raspberry Pi

Miss the fortune teller booths from fairgrounds? Now you can build your own.

You may not be able to cross a fortune teller's palm with silver like you could in the olden days, but that doesn't mean you can't just make your own. In fact, with the rise of generative AI, you can now have silicon try to predict your future and warn you of any obstacles you may face. Turns out, that's exactly what someone has done by turning their Raspberry Pi into a fortune teller.

How to change the boot-up animation on the Steam Deck
5 best games I play on the Steam Deck

The Steam Deck can play a wide variety of games, from retro classics to recent AAA blockbusters. These are my current favorites.

4
By

I recently got a Steam Deck to see if I could whittle down my gaming backlog by playing anywhere that wasn't my desk. The first thing I did to help with that quest was to add one of the best 2230 SSDs for extra storage space, increasing it to 2TB to stuff with games. Figuring out which games to install was slightly trickier, as I've got nearly 1,400 games in my Steam library, and nearly 1,000 in my Epic Games Store account, which is also playable on the Steam Deck with some extra work. I've been working my way through my backlog of games for a few months now, and one thing has stuck out. For me, this capable gaming handheld is perfect for older RPGs and isometric games of every description. Here are my favorites so far.

The Steam Deck is basically a PC in a handheld, and these are some of the craziest things you can actually use it for as a result.

If you've got a Steam Deck, you already know that you're essentially wielding a full-fledged PC in a portable format. This versatility opens up a plethora of unconventional and fascinating uses. Whether you're coding, gaming, or even converting it into a server, the Steam Deck offers a broad range of capabilities.

These are my 4 favorite Windows versions of all time and Windows 11 isn't one of them

Windows 11 might be the new kid on the block. But it's got nothing on 4 of my all-time favorites

4
By

I've been using Windows PCs all my life. The very first PC in my house was an HP Brio Pentium 3 system running Windows 98. Over 24 years or so, I've used almost all versions of Windows, but not all of them were great. Microsoft has had its fair share of hits and misses, and I definitely have my favorites.

TP-Link Archer AXE300 quad-band Wi-Fi 6E router
What happened to router custom firmware?

It was once a no-brainer to install custom firmware on a router, but support has largely dried up.

4
By

When it comes down to it, Wi-Fi routers are basically computers with hardware and software specialized for networking. But the software used by the router can make a huge difference in terms of the features available and the general behavior of the router, so it’s no surprise some people want to customize it. The difficulty of installing your own firmware on a router has always varied, with some companies like Linksys gaining a lot of goodwill a few years ago by making custom firmware installation fairly painless.

Arctic Freezer 36 A-RGB
Arctic Freezer 36 A-RGB review: A superb air cooler for the hottest mid-range CPUs

Two fans for the price of one on this larger CPU cooler.

By

Choosing the right CPU cooler for your PC isn't as simple as going with one compatible with your motherboard socket. You need to take into account how much heat is produced by the processor. The faster and more powerful the chip, the hotter it will run at full load. The harder you hit the system, the better the cooling needs to be to take the heat away from vital components. Arctic makes some of the best CPU coolers on the market and the company is back with the Arctic Freezer 36 series.

Windows is more popular for a reason.

When you think of mini computers, your mind will most likely jump to Apple's Mac Mini first and foremost. It's arguably the most popular mini computer out there, so that's completely understandable. But if you look hard enough, there's no shortage of mini Windows PCs out there either. In fact, I'd argue that if you're looking to buy a mini computer, a Windows computer should be your first choice, even if the popular Mac Mini looks appealing with its tiny design and impressive performance.
