      Into the Darkness Reviews

There's a great range of narrative in this movie, but the ending is lopped off to the point where I don't think there will be anyone who isn't confused by it.

It doesn't end -- it stops... It's as though the two-and-a-half hours you've invested were a complete waste.

How do you reconcile major differences, like party affiliations, within a family? Into the Darkness serves as a keen portrait of a deeply divided country, unsure of where its allegiance lies.

Too cluttered, disjointed and ultimately inconclusive to register much of an emotional impact.

Bolstered by strong performances, this World War II melodrama overcomes some stuffy period trappings.

It's interesting to see this side of history and where neutral countries' loyalties lay, how the moral fabric of Denmark was nearly destroyed and concessions made against better judgment and moral standards.

[T]he story is more wartime melodrama than historical drama or political character study.

You'd think this chapter in Danish history would inspire passion in a native filmmaker, but the movie lacks fervency.

This is not Luchino Visconti's "The Damned," which turned a similar premise into a nearly unwatchable miasma of grotesquerie. But neither is "Into the Darkness" more than watchable.

Instead of caring about where this family ends up when the dust settles, [this film] seeks to highlight the complexities inherent to breathing that dust in without reprieve.

It's a Danish "Downton Abbey," with just as much money...shooting and sabotage...actual life and death stakes to be dealt with every day with the enemy right at their door, and sometimes invited in for dinner and cocktails.

Unfortunately the script doesn't translate to dynamic filmmaking; the movie plays like a familiar, period drama.

While the performances are unquestionably robust, this verbose and overlong saga would have been better as a TV series.

As you watch, there is a shivery sense of a nation reckoning with its past. For international viewers, it's perhaps a little less resonant, but engrossing nonetheless.

If you have 152 minutes to sink into this morass of moral complexity and finely observed period detail, then it may well be worth it, although the ending is bizarrely, perplexingly abrupt.

The strength and weakness of Into the Darkness comes from a willingness to let events slowly unfold.

An over-stuffed, frenetically busy, hugely talkative, but always watchable and engaging yarn about one family's fortunes of war.
