Praise for the Escape From Furnace series:
“Fresh and ferocious, Lockdown will hook boys with its gritty, unrelenting surprises.”—James Patterson
“Furnace is hotter than hell and twice as much fun! Sign me up for a life sentence of Alexander Gordon Smith!”—Darren Shan, author of the Demonata series
“This nightmarish start to a new series is unrelentingly bleak, uniquely horrifying, and strangely compelling.” —Realms of Fantasy magazine
“A great next choice for fans of The Maze Runner, The Grassland Trilogy. . . or Lord of the Flies . . . Recommended for dystopia, thriller, and horror fans, or anyone looking for a fast-paced, spine-chilling ride.” —Jennifer Robinson’s Bookpage
“Readers will be turning pages without pause, and the cliff-hanger ending will have them anticipating the next installment. Most appealing is Smith’s flowing writing style, filled with kid-speak, colorful adjectives, and amusing analogies. Fans of James Patterson’s ‘Maximum Ride’ and Darren Shan’s ‘The Demonata’ series will find this satisfying fare.” —School Library Journal
“One of those leave-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat thrill rides that will grab the reader right from the start. Teens will appreciate Smith’s vivid imagery. His writing is extremely fluid, and he makes the reader feel for the characters, especially the young protagonist, Alex. Readers will be cheering him on from start to finish. Look for the sequel, Solitary, forthcoming in 2010. Readers will be anxious to see where Alex’s adventures take him next.” —VOYA
“Not for the faint-hearted, this dramatic British import is both a page- and stomach-turner. . . The pacing is superb, building on the tension as each horror is revealed while saving the ultimate monstrosity for the cliffhanger ending.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
"Lockdown is a beautifully written book that builds itself up on violence, suspense, and mystery." —A YALSA YA Galley Teen Reader

I DIED IN THAT room.
I died there among the corpses in the darkness at the bottom of the world. I died with the fires of the incinerator still burning on my flesh, like the devil himself had his fingers in me. I died with the warden’s howls of laughter ringing in my ears.
But it wasn’t a merciful death. My heart didn’t stop beating. My lungs didn’t stop clawing at the hot air. The white-hot pain didn’t leave my muscles, my skin, my bones. And I didn’t drift into oblivion the way I’d always dreamed death would be. No, I was in Furnace Penitentiary. And here even death doesn’t dare show its face. The Grim Reaper had abandoned me like everyone else, leaving me alone with my nightmares.
They say your life flashes before your eyes when you die. Well, that’s only half true. You don’t see the happy times, the laughter. You only see your failures. Lying there with the thunder of the blacksuits raging above my head and the smell of burning flesh in my throat, I saw the endless mistakes of my life laid bare.
I saw my crimes, the night my old friend Toby and I had broken into our last house. I saw the blacksuits, Moleface pulling the trigger that reduced Toby to a stain on the carpet. I saw my trial for his murder, the way the world turned against me with the crash of a gavel. I saw my first day in Furnace, buried forever beneath the ground.
I pictured Donovan, and Zee, our plan to escape. I saw us smuggling gas-filled gloves from the kitchen into the chipping room and blowing out the floor. I saw our punishment for trying to escape—trapped in the guts of the prison with the rats hungry for our blood, and the lightless coffin of solitary confinement.
I was forced to relive the horror of what they’d done to Donovan. Stripped of everything human, packed with muscle and gristle and something bad that dripped darkness into his veins. Then the horror of what I had done to him. Pressing a pillow to his face until he was no longer a monster, until he was no longer anything. I saw it all, the worst bits of my life paraded in front of me by my own stuttering heartbeat.
I tried to remember something good. Something hopeful. I mean, we’d almost made it after that. Me and Zee and the kid called Simon. We’d almost climbed our way to freedom up the incinerator chimney. I still had that splinter of daylight in my mind. I had seen the sun, and it had seen me, and maybe that was enough. Maybe I could die now knowing I’d broken Furnace, knowing that I had breathed fresh air once again.
Except the death Furnace had in store for me wasn’t a genuine one. The blacksuits had lit the incinerator when we were halfway up, and they had pulled us from the flames with hunger in their silver eyes. And I knew what was coming.
My my, look what the rats dragged in. Get them into surgery, prep the wheezers. We can still use them.
The echo of the warden’s voice, one of the last things I would ever hear. Because I died in that room. Like all the other lost boys of Furnace I would soon be reborn, but I wouldn’t be me. I would become a blacksuit, my heart as dark as my jacket. Or I’d become a rat, trapped in the tunnels of the prison and feasting on those I had once called friends.
But even as I felt myself dragged off to the infirmary I swore that it wasn’t over.
Just don’t forget your name, Monty had told me. I wouldn’t.
I died in that room.
I would be reborn as something else, something terrible.
But I was Alex Sawyer.
And I would have my revenge.

Not when there are cameras everywhere, mounted machine guns ready to take aim at the first sign of rebellion and black suits more than happy to deliver their brand of justice.
But when your only other choices are to die or become a monster, trying to find a way out seems worth the risk.
Even if it means unleashing an evil that you can't control. Even if it means enduring the Warden's wrath. And even if it means that Alfred Furnace will be coming for you.
***
Death Sentence is third, pulse-pounding, action-packed and bone-chilling installment in the Escape from Furnace series by Alexander Gordon Smith. With each new book, the series gets darker, the dangers to the main character Alex become exponentially greater, his chances of survival grow slimmer and the need to escape is even more critical.
Readers were first introduced to the blood watch, the dogs, the black suits, the wheezers and the Warden. Then they got to meet the rats. But there are things that are even more terrifying, even more deadly. Things that even the Warden can't control.
They are the berserkers. These terrifying creatures that were once human are Alfred Furnace's creations. Experiments gone wrong. Beings so devoid of humanity, filled only with rage and tremendous power, that their bloodlust knows no bounds and their loyalty is to no man. They will kill without thought, slaughter without mercy. And if they were to be let loose, there would be almost no hope for survival.
In Death Sentence, author Alexander Gordon Smith takes readers to new parts of Furnace Penitentiary and introduces them to all sorts of new horrors. More is revealed about the origins of the experiments, the wheezer's nectar, the Warden and even Alfred Furnace.
And as with each previous installment, the situation becomes even more dire. When things seem as if they can't possibly get worse, they do.
The author has managed to increase the level of excitement with each book, surprising readers with new twists and turns, taking things right to the edge of the abyss before pulling them back, and layering in such vivid, detailed descriptions of each new monstrosity, each new horror that is visited upon the inmates, and each new obstacle that his characters must face in their attempts to regain their freedom.
The pace in Death Sentence is blistering. The action is intense and riveting. The characters' plight is nerve-wracking. And the outcome is still unknown.
With two more books in the series, who will be the victor is still to be determined.
For fans of the series, this installment is not one to be missed. And for those who haven't yet visited Furnace Penitentiary, be prepared to be scared, to witness horrors never imagined and to discover that the longer you stay the less you'll want to leave.
This series is a must, must read.
The story will flood into you like a cold rush. Wow, Mr Alexander Gordon Smith. He could be the next King, even better than King ever could have thought to be.
Yes, mighty powerful words, but read it for yourself, starting from book one and I am confident you will see it my way here.
In this read without giving too much away, Alex the main character has been caught, again and as far as the prison sees it, the last time he will ever outwit this horrid hell that is Furnace. Its his turn to become a Black suit, a monstrosity. What happens to him is just gut wrenching. BUT...there will be HELL to pay...Ive gotta know what happens next, on to book 4.
This third installment returns to the quality of story enjoyed in the first book, LOCKDOWN that I had felt was somewhat lacking in the sequel. In fact the added heavy hitting action infused into the strong original storyline, including answers...yes, answers; pushed DEATH SENTENCE slightly ahead of the pack in my book (pardon the pun). Dare I say Escape From Furnace #3 is the standout read of the series thus far and well worth the wait... I dare. Brilliant work Smith, keep up!

Shane Hawthorne appears to have it all, but it is just a façade he has carefully constructed. It is one that will crumble with one small move. When he meets Delaney Fraser, he thinks she is the answer to all his problems. Too bad, he doesn’t realize he will soon have to face each lie he has told himself.
Delaney has started a new life as well, running from her past. She is a waitress and is working hard to save money to put herself through school. When a chance encounter puts her in the crosshairs of Shane Hawthorne, her life will never be the same.
Shane wants Delaney, and he is used to getting what he wants. He tries to convince her that he just needs her as his “girlfriend” while he is on the road touring with his band. Having a beautiful woman by his side keeps the groupies away, and it also helps keeping his demons locked up. He wants more from her. She seems drama-free, and there is an innocence there. She really sees Shane as a person, not the rock god. He finds that calms his dark demons. He doesn’t realize she has her own demons and darkness.
Delaney is a very complicated character. No, she is by far not perfect. However, she is a good person. I, myself, don’t know how she puts one foot in front of the other each day. The baggage she carries would completely suffocate me. She and Shane have to overcome a lot to find their happiness. It definitely won’t be easy.
What I loved about this book is that it wasn’t just about the romance and chemistry. Yes, those are beautifully intertwined within the story, but Leigh takes on several issues. She does it so seamlessly. They all blend perfectly together to create a phenomenal book.
I can always tell when a writer loves what they’re doing…they aren’t just going through the motions. When a writer feels what he or she is writing, that always come through to me. I know Tara Leigh feels every word she writes. Shane and Delaney proved that with their actions and their words. I knew this was an important story for Leigh to tell, and it was even reiterated in her author’s note at the end of the book. I hope someone who is struggling with the same issues or knows someone who is will find hope in Shane and Delaney’s story!

Alex Gordon Smith did an amazing job creating havoc in Furnace by making alliances between prisoners. Sworn enemies, the 59ers and the Skulls, unite with Alex for the better good. Cast also includes Zee, Simon, and even Donovan is mentioned several times. The non-stop action pushes through page after page, making the book impossible to put down.
Looking forward to read book four: Fugitives.
