I watched it again most of the time that the President Donald Trump State of the Union Address was on and I was flipping between that and this movie on my screens. For a piece of fiction it sure does ring true to life in a sense. Sometimes you get what you want selling your soul, sometimes you really are disappointed. The State of the Union kind of reminds me of the party scene near the middle of the film. I guess this time does remind me of a quality dark comedy about the Sweet Bird of Youth failing in 1978 and suffering the consequences years and years into the future.... Anyhow, I think the "diabolically inventive" thing about this movie is not the special effects, though those are amazing: It is how art imitates life in the weirdest senses. That's all I can muster like a shocked Jay Leno watching a clip of this movie with Meryl Streep when Goldie Hawn knocks her down the stairs (yes, that scene.) I'll get real for a moment here: This is the kind of thing that you do not want to make too much sense about because that kind of sanity sort of "scares the hell out of people anyway in high doses". I'll keep this pretty short and say that this is a great fable of a movie about eternal life, playing god and all of that stuff.
It's good to finally have this movie in its original widescreen format, but it doesn't appear to have been actually remastered in HD despite marketing claims. There are a LOT of dark scenes and dark edges (appropriate for a black comedy about death and eternal life) and there is absolutely no definition in the dark spots - dark browns, dark purples - all turn to mud and are indistinguishable from black. The price for this Blu Ray is ridiculously high for this inferior video image. I've read elsewhere that this is a recurring problem with products from Shout Factory, but this is my first purchase of a Shout BD. Buyer beware
Robert Zemeckis lampoons the dark side of Hollywood in this glitzy, star studded effect driven comedy. The script is sharp and witty and it’s always fun to see Meryl Streep do comedy. The pairing of her and Goldie Hawn generates wonderful chemistry as they vamp and camp their way through the film with glee. The movie sort of goes off the rails towards the end and paints itself into a corner but it’s still a ton of fun. It was interesting to watch again to see the special effects that were quite cutting edge at the time the movie was released. Bruce Willis fans will also enjoy watching him play against type as the belliguered Dr. Menville. This is definitely a good fantasy comedy that has become more endearing over the years and is totally worth checking out.

First let me say I LOVE this movie but im only giving it two stars here for the lousy picture quality. I just got this on Blu Ray been waiting some time I also got a couple of other older films just released on Blue Ray and watched on on my brand new smart tv 1089 pixel and new blu ray player and this was the only one that had poor quality. Some scenes looked good while others where totally grainy. But I've also never had gotten a film on blu ray that wasn't from a major studio my first experience with something from Shout Factory. I won't make that mistake again. Outrageous they put out an inferior product at that price.
I mostly wanted this movie for the great comic performance of Bruce Willis. He is so talented, he can play any role and be so convincing. In this one of the hyper sensitive husband of Meryl Streep, who is great as always, and the pawn of Goldie Hawn, also excellent in her role, he is a wonder to behold. It is hard to believe this is the same actor who so successfully played John Mclane in Die Hard. He is hysterical in the role and can cheer you up in this comedy if you have a blue day. The special effects are superb and Ingrid Bergman;s daughter Isabella Rossellini, plays the role as the dream maker who can make your wishes come true, is excellent also. Have fun and enjoy this great comedy with three of our biggest stars, but Bruce steals it.
Wanting merely to upgrade my full frame dvd to widescreen, opted to not spend a great wad and bought this German blu. The back states "Region B", but it played just fine in my cheapie Region A Sanyo player. The ONLY reason for not giving 5 stars, is that for some reason I cannot access its special features (trailers, featurette). Other than that, a notable improvement over dvd (and now in widescreen!). No, not a reference quality blu-ray (as cited by others), but I don't THINK I laughed any less as result! Sooo many stellar aspects to this film: Writing, directing, acting, Sydney Pollack (as the Dr.: worth watching the movie for!), the overall tongue cheekiness of the whole affair. Highly recommended, in any format! (one of those films that will be added to my "cheap Christmas gifts" list, when dvd price drops. Can be cheaper than a card!)
Robert Zemeckis’ first stumble at the box office, I thought I’d revisit it to see if (like Joe Vs the Volcano) this was an overlooked classic. It’s not, but I’m not sure it’s Zemeckis’ fault exactly. Test audiences had hated the movie, Universal panicked and the decision was made to downplay the film’s more vicious aspects. So they reshot the final act, trimmed and tucked all the nasty, and shifted the promotional focus to the novelty of cgi. It’s pretty clear why audiences felt cheated, and I can see why people stayed away in droves. But there is some campy fun to be had here, just go in knowing it’s never going to bite quite like it should.
I thought it would be horrible quality but it’s great. It is an old movie so keep that in mind if you have a 4K or 8k quality tv. I have a 4K and this looks great on tv. the movie is hilarious and it’s definitely a perfect Halloween movie 🍿. I don’t want to give away the movie but it is about a man that left his girlfriend for her sister and ended up regretting it. A few twist but overall enjoyable . Classic and highly recommend the movie!!!

This is one of the best comedies of the 1990's and it is now lived up to the true classic that foretells every woman's nightmare and every man's horror when the Witch Queen of full Beauty wants to stay as the Snow White.
Madeline Ashton is a washed up Actress (played marvellously by the versatile Oscar winner and the best actress in show business according to critics and audience is Meryl Streep) and when her Childhood rival Helen Sharp (Goldie Hawn) brings in Fiancé Dr Ernest Menville (Bruce Willis) and swiftly before Helen can say "smiley faces", Madeline takes Ernest away and betrothed, then Helen plots revenge that is better than murder, and soon Madeline encounters the mysterious Mr Chagall and recommends the answer to faded flower Madeline's wishes of ageless Beautiful enchantress and witch Elesle Van Rhuman (Isabella Rossellini). Then as two women meet, there deepest secret is revealed.
This is one of the top ten best dark comedies you will ever see and the cast are in fine form, you will see two of the most beautiful, immoral, greedy, vain women fighting as they knock each other down literally. The script is packed with one-liners that are viciously sarcastic but witty and reflect symbolism of ageing. Rossellini that represents youth as three hunky helpers with those "popular" names and when she calls them they "awake"
It is a brilliant comedy which is rarely made anymore back when the days are so carefree, Both Actresses Streep and Hawn are brilliant and gorgeous, their comedy timing is genius and there is no dull moment.
Go watch it because it is so much fun and forget a few negative sensitivity bruised reviews
4.0 out of 5 starsPerfect trio in bizarre and wonderful dark comedy

Falling actress Madeline Ashton (Streep) learns of a secret potion that will regenerate her beauty whilst her long term enemy Helen (Hawn) looks set to steal her husband
Black comedies are some weird and wonderful creations. The Coen brothers are creative masters at such a genre, whether depicting the nature of the government in Burn after Reading or revealing the solidity of harsh actions in Intolerable Cruelty the pair have become a landmark and favourites.
To take the concept of death and vanity and putting a comedy twist on it sounds almost as controversial as Dogma and as zany for Zemeckis as you like, given his previous hit was the final part in the Back to the Future trilogy. But despite the initially oddity of this picture, it is perfect comedy gold with a strange darkness and bizarreness to rival Tim Burton.
The film begins with a song and dance routine with Meryl Streep in as good as singing voice as in her later role Mamma Mia! After a couple of confusing scenes we see Helen has gone into depression after her husband got hitched with Madeline and it seems we have a soapy style love triangle but after Madeline gets her hand on a love potion and we see Helen return to the mix, everything becomes much more light hearted and very funny, with sharp physical comedy and maintaining that level of bizarre activity throughout.
Goldie Hawn is the stand out with a wacky crazed character that is simply likeable despite her vindictiveness. Streep is, as ever, on fine form and pleasantly Willis has dived away from his stereotyped action hero into a soft hearted struggler who wants his life back. The pairing of the three works wonders and is hard to imagine any other in such roles as the playful comic acting is in perfect harmony with the wacky script.
The film revolves around the concept of vanity with the female protagonists looking to get their lives back with simply changing their appearances. Echoes of Sunset Boulevard's excellent Gloria Swanson will be heard and there is almost a perfect intertextuality in the way Streep handles her character's selfishness.
Winner of Best visual effects at the Oscars this 1992 comedy fantasy brings the comedy as well as the fantasy with some bizarre visuals including weapons through the stomach and a neck twisting scene that will make your neck turn the other way.
DeathBecomesHer is a must watch, simply because it is so out of sync with reality and maintains a strong level of comedy and fantasy that will make your head spin.
5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing, it is a classic! A MUST WATCH movie.

What an amazing movie. Was looking for it for a while now and finally found it. Good standard delivery and the quality is agreeable for the price and the 'age' of the movie. A classic movie which to my mind should be highly valued as there is an important message. It reflects the money making Hollywood giant and the media for which the majority of our society is falling for or naively believing, trying to conform beauty standards and a certain way of materialistic life. It brings the message across that beauty should be seen in a holistic way and that a life without morals and ethics is sad and senseless. This movie should be used for educational purposes, showing that the beauty industry is to be considered with caution. At the same time it is a lot of fun watching it as there is 'black humour' involved and the actors are just incredible. Especially Meryl Streep who is doing an outstanding performance, funny and convincing. She is one of the best actors of all times and has yet again has proven it in this movie.

It's a lovely, bizarre film from director Bob Zemeckis (Back to the Future; Used Cars), blending romantic comedy with elements of horror and suspense. Unfortunately the film (in this region 2 disc) has the 'zoomed-in' quality of a film that has been severely cropped, heavily pixilated and grainy. But there's a decent little documentary about the making of the film with interview-bits with the director and some actors.
For those who enjoy the film, look-out for the upcoming blu-ray coming out State-side this spring of 2016.
4.0 out of 5 starsone of my favorite comedy ever!! hilarious!!!!

Since 'DeathBecomesher' is a black comedy, naturally the plot includes lots of exaggerated parts. However, this movie is basically about every woman's endless desire: how to stay forever young and beautiful. Madeleine(Meryl Streep) is a movie actress obsessed with her falling career and aging body. Helen(Gold Hawn) is Madeleine's compulsive childhood rival. Helen also has a complex about Madeline stealing of her man. Eventually, they became great enemies each other and will fight until either of them to win. Subtly, because of drinking portions, duo have to help each other to survive. Every role is played to perfection and the jokes fly by very quickly. Especially, Gold Hawn and Meryl Streep gave an exclusive, hilarious performane ever. In my opinion, this movie sarcastically seemed to show the final result of the human addiction to plastic surgery. DVD is in a general widescreen version, not in full screen. Additionally, a brief making of film and trailer consists of a full screen.
